A little late in getting this up, but on friday a new addition to the game was announced...There’s a method for powering yourself up as needed to do battle with the Subspace Army—a method that has not been seen before.
Could this be a character upgrade/stat system/some form of customization or levels?

Or MAYBE it's the option of using a Wii Headset for online play?

You know I never really thought of that meaning leveling your character, but really makes sense!! Good JOB!!!

oh god I can't wait till they show the update that has that. It will be awsome

Nintendo will never allow voice chat in their online games, because the horrible people who play online will either:

1) Swear more than a sailor at Nintendo's child audience

or

2) Wish to rape said child audience

Sorry.

Although I am interested in the new and deep 1 Player mode, it's always about the roster in a SSB game. I am still clinging to the hope that Sonic will make the final cut.

Can someone please (in a nutshell) explain the SSB games to me? Are they not just fighting games with Nintendo characters? I've never played one, but I've also never been drawn to one.

People get excited over them, so there must be something... I'm just missing the draw completely.

Rothbart, you'd actually have to play the game for a while to realize what makes it tick. The control system is different from anything I've ever seen, and ya, it does have Nintendo characters in it...

You've seriously got to give it a try. We'll have to get some Sarcastic Gamer action once it's released!

But it's just a fighting game, right? I mean what are the chances I'll like it if I don't like Mortal Combat, Street Fighter, Virtua Fighter, Tekken, Dead or Alive, etc?

How is it different than any of these fighters other than theme?

Ploogle

It's not like your standard two-player brawler game. Just search for "Smash Bros Melee" on Youtube and you'll get a good idea of the system.

If you want the nitty-gritty, the main difference is that there's a percent damage system. If the other player gets hit, their percentage goes up. The higher the percentage, the further they'll go. It goes until one person goes flying off the map, and the system is actually a lot more solid than I just described. It's very fun to play...against other people your skill level. If you go up against a Smash Bros Pro, then it's not very fun.

I've never been a huge fan of the Mortal Kombat or Street Fighter series either but I ABSOLUTELY love the Smash Bros series. Here are a couple things that make it better than traditional fighting games:

1.) The control scheme is easy. This is by far the best thing about Smash Bros. Anybody can pick it up and play without any experience and still do pretty well. But there is also that learning curve that veteran SB players have attained and sets them apart from the rest.

2.) 4 Players. It's amazing how much more fun a fighting game becomes when its 4 players instead of 1 vs 1.

3.) No ridiculous combos to pull off moves. This one is self-explanatory. The hardest moves to pull off consist of hitting over and a button at the same time. Timing is everything though.

4.) Nintendo characters. It's got all the characters that we've grown up loving.

5.) Well-balanced. Most characters are well balanced and equal in skills making it fun to play with any character unlike most fighting games where you get great with one character and forget the rest.

6.) Playing with your friends. Nothing makes this game more fun than having 3 friends over (or online if they ever get an f'n headset) and yelling, screaming, taunting and laughing while playing this game.

7.) The health system is unique. There is no such thing as losing all your health, it's just that the more you get beat up, the more likely you are not going to be able to get back to the stage when you get hit hard.

Those are just a few of the things that make this game so great. It really is all about playing with your friends. If they don't introduce a headset for this game then it will only be half as good as it could be. You really can't experience this game fully unless you get together with 3 friends and sit down and play this game for a couple hours. If you can do that, then you'll never want to stop playing.

Maybe I'll rent it and check it out... I've only got controllers for 2 players on the Wii though and am not too interested in shelling out more cash for controllers (as I'm already looking at putting the band back together).

Ploogle
10-09-2007, 04:50 PM
It's good with 2 controllers, too. Do you have any GC controllers? You can play it with four different types of control, including the classic GC controller.

Yousty
10-09-2007, 05:03 PM
Personally I suggest playing it with the gamecube controllers. My guess is that's going to be the best control scheme. You just can't beat classic.

rothbart

10-09-2007, 05:33 PM
yeah pick up Melee and some GC controllers and invite some frineds over and play. Besides what other game will let you see up peachs skirt? lol jk jk. Seriously though what other game will let you see peach beating the crap out of mario or vice versa

rothbart

Yeah, that's probably not going to happen... with as many really great looking games coming out, I'm not likely to go buy three GC controllers to check out a game I'm not sure I'm going to like.

*psh* Heck ya! That's because it's from all kinds of different games, each with their own feel. The stages set a lot of different moods for the same general thing...

...and they'd BETTER have some amazing cutscenes in the solo mode.

yes but if it is delayed in the U.S. it will probably be till january

Well, im guessing there just going to move it back 1-2 weeks. There not going to take it out of the holiday lineup for sure. They probably just wanna make sure they are going to be able to produce enough.

I know that I am a little late to the party but I wanted to add something to the description for Rothbart: think of it more as a game of "King of the Hill" rather than a fighting game. The game isn't about depleting your enemies' life bars, but about knocking them off of the platform / screen...

rothbart
10-11-2007, 11:54 AM
It sounds more like a game I might want a friend to own (including all the controllers, etc) than one I'd see myself buying/owning.

As I prioritize my "most wanted" gaming list, something like this would fall well into the double digits (that don't start with a 1 or 2). But in the right setting/mindset, I'm sure it's a blast.

Duff
10-11-2007, 11:55 AM
It's definitely a party-type game... you get the most out of it with friends...

Super Smash Bros. Brawl Delayed To 2008 In US

George Harrison opened Nintendo's media event in San Francisco today with confirmation on the new release date for Super Smash Bros. Brawl, recently delayed for Japan. According to George, the new North American ship date for the Wii brawler is now February 10, 2008. George put a positive spin on the post holiday bump, simply saying the developers needed more time. I'll be playing it in just a few minutes, so expect first hands-on impressions soon.

For all you guys that have never really put any time into Smash Bros. (rothbart, Ala, and others) and don't understand what it's all about, I highly suggest reading this short write up from three IGN writers who just finished playing the demo. They're absolutely blown away by the game:

Actually, (and this is entirely honest and not meant to ruffle any feathers), the videos pretty much ensure me that it's not anything I'd ever buy... I just don't find myself in situations where I've got 3-4 similarly skilled gamers at my house to play something like that.

A can see the novelty of having multi-game characters though.

Maybe they'll just make it compatible with your wireless bluetooth headset for your cell phone?

SWSilentkiller
10-12-2007, 10:44 PM
Ploogle if they give us a headset I expect to hear a lot of whiny little 12 year olds, whinning about how you were being cheap with whatever character followed by a lot of racial comments and then finishing off with something to do with your mother

WHAT?!? I no longer know you...and I didn't really to begin with. If you think Melee was repetitive, then you completely overlooked the point of the game.

Heck yes. The basic battle system hasn't changed much at all, which is going to be amazing. Online play, however limited, is definitely going to be a huge plus...

I pray to god that the Wii doesn't have lag issues...
All I want out of brawl is basically what is already being delivered:
1. Better graphics
2. More characters
3. More stages
4. More music
5. More everything
6. A few extra different ways to slaughter everyone would be nice :)
