View Full Version : Socom Beta Questions...
kendecosta 09-12-2008, 11:18 PM Ok, I just got into the beta tonight and am a little disturbed... I fell asleep 3 times looking at a load screen. plus there's lots, I mean LOTS, of lag. what gives? i haven't been in many betas before... most recently halo 3 & battlefield and they ran pretty smooth. Is this common with betas? Is it just because it's early in the beta? or is this just because PSN isn't the greatest of networks? I know it's essentially an online demo and isn't complete, so I'm not that down on it... I plan to buy it for the headset if nothing else anyway. it would be great to get a good game for online. do you guys think it's indicative of the final game or have you had similar experiences with other betas?
Vertrucio 09-12-2008, 11:25 PM It's common with betas because they are betas, unfinished code.
The loading problem is a syncing problem with people with bad connections, same for the lag.
The PSN network works just fine in most cases, but some games aren't as fault tolerant, and especially not games that aren't finished yet.
They already have a patch in the works to deal with the loading and lag issues, this was confirmed in the official SOCOM forums.
Please be sure to read the big prompts that pop up saying that the beta is unfinished and not indicative of the final game. That's all anyone should have to say.

o, i know... but like I said, the few experiences I've had with betas have been pretty positive until now. also, I didn't set it up. my son did, and he didn't mention any "alert" posts. I think I'll wait till later in the week to try again... give 'em time to patch it. and thank you.

SOCOM: Confrontation Public Beta Update
Posted: 11 Sep 2008 03:00 PM CDT
Thank you all for participating in the SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation Public Beta. We know that it has not gone as smoothly as we would all like, but I want to assure you that we are working on the issues. Please remember, the main purpose of the Public Beta was to identify just these types of issues before the game is launched.
We are working on and testing another patch right now. For this patch, the focus is to resolve the following issues:
Abnormally long network synchronization issues when some users in a game have a poor network connection. This issue causes 4-7 minute (or longer) load times when late joining a game.
An issue where respawn game late joiners were sometimes stuck in spectator mode and could not respawn into the game.
Remove the latency detection network test which is causing some users with poor network connections to receive the network latency icon (red X).
We will announce when the new patch will be released once we've verified the fixes and it has passed our QA.
Regards,
SOCOM: Confrontation Online Team
Nightkiller93 09-14-2008, 07:31 AM Good to see they're working on it, the beta will be awesome when they do fix all the problems.
BuckWild35 09-14-2008, 04:50 PM don't ever expect the beta to be awesome, that's why it's a beta!!!
Vertrucio 09-14-2008, 05:46 PM Wow, I do have to say the current build has tons of problems, but that's betas for you. I've actually experienced worse betas before. But thankfully they have identified and are fixing the two main problems with the current build, namely the long load times and the tendency to get locked into spectator mode.
I can't wait until they get those fixed.

Wow, a thread I'm NOT catching crap for... yet.
seriously, thanks for all the input. despite all the beta issues, i really think this is gonna be a good(maybe great) game.
Vertrucio 09-26-2008, 11:39 PM Alright, with the latest patch I was finally able to get a decent amount of play time, and things still aren't good.
Sad to say, but I think SOCOM Confrontation is a relic of the PS2 era. It really doesn't know what it wants to be. On one hand you have a realistic setting and all this emphasis on realism in the look. On the other hand the main tactic revolves around running full speed through levels with assault rifles and SMGs not unlike Counter-Strike. The control scheme is this clunky beast meant for 1990s era military FPS games like the original Ghost Recon or the original Rainbow Six. Meanwhile the gameplay is so fast paced that you really won't be using any of it.
At this point I'd have preferred Slant 6 had gone and made a version of SOCOM Tactical Assault (a very good PSP game similar to Full Spectrum Warrior) for the PS3.
With so many upcoming PS3 games that fulfill the fast action shooter niche (R2, CoD5, even CoD4) it doesn't look like there's much hope for SOCOM to gain a good sized audience unless they take it further in the tactical slower paced route, but then you get a lot of the fans complaining.
corgon67 09-27-2008, 02:26 PM Why does it take so long to load the game, it takes forever!
DontEatTheYellowSnow 09-27-2008, 04:53 PM betas are betas, they are there to test the game, never expect them to be up to scratch as a proper published game. Never.
DolmenRage 09-27-2008, 05:02 PM I can tell you ythat the Warhawk beta was freakin awesome and almost flawless, and that was over a year and a half ago.
Vertrucio 09-27-2008, 05:42 PM Actually, in this case I'm the first person to say betas are incomplete. However, a lot of my comments are pretty intrinsic to the SOCOM Franchise. Specifically the control scheme issue and the way it's really out of place compared to the kind of game it is, and modern control schemes.
