Ok, so Alone in the Dark may have been a tad broken (http://sarcasticgamer.com/wp/index.php/2008/06/non-fiction-ataris-latest-failure-is-alone-in-the-dark.html) when it was released on the 360 back in June (I’m not even going to mention the shudder inducing Wii version), but when Newso, the news delivering bird, dropped a newspaper on my lap with the headline ‘PS3 Version of Alone in the Dark to have Fixed Controls and Inventory as well as Other Improvements’, I was pleasantly surprised. My surprise was even more pleasant, when I found out that these improvements were also coming to the 360 (http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=220266).
However, find out why I’m now unpleasantly surprised after the jump, or just read the title of this post.
Alone in the Dark was one of those games that showed moments of brilliance, but was marred by a wide array of technical and control issues. The PS3 patch addresses all the problems that the 360 version had: bad controls, annoying inventory, awful driving sections and a shoddy camera system,* as well as including a new Subway Chase level.
The patch was destined to also arrive on the 360, but contrary to earlier reports (http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=220266), game designer Emile Morel could not confirm that a patch was definitely coming to Mircrosoft’s console:
“It’s technically complicated. The size of a patch is very limited by Microsoft. So if we do a patch it would only be about the new control and the new camera.”
Right, so thanks to Microsoft’s limiting of patch sizes (http://sarcasticgamer.com/wp/index.php/2008/09/sg-interview-gabe-newell-dishes-on-dlc-for-left-4-dead-and-much-more.html), the 360 version would receive everything except the new Subway Chase level. Still, that’s not too bad is it?
“I guess it also depends on the success of this version. If people review it again and said it’s not worth it…”
Ok, well that’s pretty much confirmed it: the 360 will never see this patch. Goodnight.
No, I’m just kidding (hilarious wasn’t it?). The patch may, or may not, come to the 360, but for the moment, if you want to play Alone in the Dark, the PS3 is the way to go.
