Ok, it didn’t really save my life, but the title was intriguing enough to get you to read on right? [Editor: Worked for me]

So for a year of my job, I did a lot of travelling. I lived out of a suitcase, stayed in a different hotel every other night, y’know real road warrior kinda stuff. If I wasn’t working, I was eating, sleeping or trying to kill time, the latter of which broke down into 4 options: sports center, podcasts, books, and the occasional video game, which brings me back to the title of this little diddly.

Why anyone actually hired me to install and implement optical networks is beyond me, but if they want to keep paying me I’ll gladly accept a paycheck, after all - video games are not cheap. Here are 3 games that helped me get through the fact that I knew nothing about DWDM, SONET or how to troubleshoot a 10g fiber optic mesh network.

1. Puzzle Quest. Never has a match-3 game and classic rpg elements been so happy to be wed in holy matrimony. Like the best games, this one is easy to pick up and play, yet deep enough to almost mandate a second or third playthrough, and that’s before you really understand how addictive this game is.

2. New Super Mario Bros. This one is perfect for the road. Play a level, close up shop and go to work. Play a level right after lunch. Play a level during a conference call. Why there hasn’t been a second iteration of this series is beyond me.

3. Pokemon. Laugh if you want. but anyone who has played more than 5 minutes at any of these games knows that Pokemon is not a child’s game. Granted, they have had success off the same formula since 1996, with just some updated text and sprites, but it isn’t broke so there’s no need to fix it.

An honorable mention goes to Mario Kart DS, but wifi on the road is shady at best and I can only handle so much of the computer’s cheating before I miss, the much more preferable, human opponent’s cheating.
