While it may have the potential to kick ass, it sure as hell isn't living up to that potential right now.

Now I defend myself (hopefully): The reason that the PS3 is a piece of crap is the pricepoint? I understand that you don't have a lot of money, mow more lawns or wait until you are 16. If you move to AK I might give you a job.
Now that the price is within $100, the price is competitive. (maybe not to you, LumpyD, but in the grand scheme of things it is) The biggest problem with the PS3 is games. They have 2 pretty good ones, in my opinion, and not much more. But if you look at the 360, the games that it launched with weren't that good either. CoD2 is AWESOME!

Like I have said before, I don't see the PS3 failing in the long run, even though it isn't doing to great currently. I mean, look at is predecessors.
PS1 - probably the greatest system of it's time.
PS2 - like one of the best selling consoles EVER.
PS3 - TBA

I think the PS3 has the full potential to kick a lot of ass, they just need to get their crap together and play the right cards. I see it as having a few more problems than just cost also. It doesn't have a great lineup, after more than 6 months since release, the oh so awesome web browser fails to impress, the online play is most definitely not the best. I make fun of it because all these "great" things they promised are turning out to be less than average. I would actually like to see some more impressive games, so I can have some reason to play the one on display at my local Gamestop. It gets a little tiring having to give up my drivers license to play the Wii, or playing games I already have at home on the 360...

I'm not sure that all of those are correct. But it seems like a bigger launch list. I'm not saying that it was a success but I don't think it was a failure.

An argument could be made that the 3rd party games were already on the 360, but I don't expect 3rd parties to make exclusives just for MS.
I also thought that Motorstorm was a launch title. I'll have to say that playing that demo in GameStop really entices me to almost buy a PS3 every time. Also, if you look at game distribution over PSN, and not just arcade titles, that could revolutionize the distribution of console games. And I'm not sure what the pricing is, but with the correct advertising and ease of distribution, it could do well. If this happens then MS is going to need to catch up. And that will be expensive for gamers.
Hell, it already is. If you look at the Elite, the price is only $20 less than the PS3 (the little one). You do get a bigger drive, but you have to buy the drive or the Elite if you already own one.
So let's do some hardcore gaming math:
1 360 premium bought at launch: $399
1 120 gig hard drive: $179
1 HD-DVD drive $99 (price dropped)
or
1 360 Elite $479

So we hardcores spend: $678 or $977
Now last time I checked that's more money than a PS3 launch system.
Here's the last part of my defense on why I think that the PS3 isn't a crappy system.

THE 360 COSTS MORE FOR THE HARDCORE GAMER, IF YOU COMPARE APPLES TO APPLES. THE GAMES WILL EVENTUALLY BE THERE, UNLESS YOU FORGET THE PS1 OR PS2. I WILL OWN A PS3, I WILL NOT OWN AN ELITE OR A HD-DVD DRIVE ANYTIME SOON, IT'S A WAST OF MONEY, IMO.
I hope that some of you make up your mind on the facts instead of brand loyalty.

Why? Price and games. Have you seen the list of games coming out for the Wii?? ANOTHER Zelda, 2 Resident evil games, Mario Party, Paper Mario, Mario Cart Wii. The list goes on and on.

Sorry, I'm a father and husband with a good job and $100 IS enough to make me look else where for my console gaming needs. I would have bought a Wii if I could have found one because of the price and the upcoming titles but in the end I'm happy with my 360.

GTA, EA sports, etc. They've got Final Fantasy and MGS ( which is ending with 4 btw). I wouldn't be surprised in FF announced that it would be on the 360 as well. Soon MS won't have to buy exclusive content because developers are in the business of making money, not staying loyal to one brand. And right now making games for the PS3 is a sure way to lose money, except for a few titles with hardcore followers.

Are you going to buy the 120 gig drive for the 360? How about a HD-DVD player? If so then you just bought a PS3 and a 3rd party game for it. I also have a family and a good job, and I think about money, but $100 is a couple of nights out to eat or 1 1/4 tanks of gas, of which I don't think about half the time.

I refuse to buy an elite also, and I think both HD DVD and Blue-Ray are kinda rip offs right now, except for the wealthier people. I doubt I will ever buy the HD DVD player and I would like to have the 120 GB but it is not needed. I think that is one way that Microsoft kinda screwed us over. We wait in lines, get our launch day 360s, then have most of them break...
Even through that, we got to brag that we were lucky to get the launch day ones, but now some 10 year old kid down the street got an Elite from his mommy, and he has a better system than me...

Next there will be the rich Halo fans that get the Halo 3 360, and say they are more hardcore, because they can afford one. I have every Halo book, getting the comics soon, have all the games/DC, getting the freaking $130 Halo 3. Some dude waited to get his 360, gets to have a Halo 3 edition, and everyone thinks he is awesome for it. The system is an overkill. Yes it is probably one of the biggest games ever, but to make a brand new system over it?

Nope and Double nope. 20 gigs is plenty for my needs and the HD-DVD vs Blu ray war is going to get hotter before it cools down. I'll stick to regular DVDs until the market figures out which is going to prevail (my vote is with HD but my money is staying in the bank.)

Good job or not $100 is $100. That's a week worth and back to work for both us for a week and a half or a weeks worth of groceries.

I genuinely wanted to like the PS3 even at that price point but Sony's "holier then thou" attitude in the weeks and months prior to release sort of soured my opinion of them. Lines like "....People won't need PCs anymore" and "..I think people would buy this system at twice the price" rubbed me the wrong way. Sony has forgotten that their system is a gaming system first and an entertainment center second. They're creating crap, slapping the Playstation name on it and assuming that people will buy it based on fanboyism. Past performance does not equal future results. Hopefully the PS4 does better because the PS3 is a lost cause.

I think you're wrong. I think you'd be right if you dropped the "when the dust settles part" because I think the ordering you've described will happen, except it will be much sooner than "when the dust settles" and it will be temporary.

The Wii just won't have the (hardware) legs to compete long-term with the other consoles. If hardware, graphics, physics, general oomph didn't matter, why hasn't any other console lasted longer than it has? I think the 360 will be the most damaging to the Wii simply to due to price proximately and I think the PS3 will have even longer legs than the 360. So while it may simply be that the PS3 outlasts the other two consoles and sells more by being actively on the market longer, there is no way I see the Wii ending on top between the three current consoles.

Of the games you listed the only one I'd remotely consider buying would be Mario Kart since it's reported to finally include an online component... but that's a long shot. I'm sure Nintendo will sell craploads of consoles and games, don't get me wrong... but I see that system's lifecycle drastically accellerated... I bet it's replaced within 3 years.

I think that the you're looking at the Wii from the wrong perspective rothbart. Nintendo is not looking to grab market share from MS or Sony, they are going after the "others" market.

The "other" market would be children, most women, and older generations. This market isn't interested in the complexities of online gaming or intense graphics that the hardcore market is interested in.

The Wii has done exactly what Nintendo set out to do with it. Open gaming to the rest of the world by making it FUN. I'm not saying that the complex games aren't fun, but to a less then casual gamer like my mother they are just plain frustrating. My mother will be playing her Wii for many many years to come. *That's* why I say that it will be on top. There market is HUGE compared to the one that MS and Sony are fighting over.

I doubt the system will be replaced that fast. You're cutting the life of the system in half of the average. 4-5 years maybe, but not 3. Since the N64 Nintendo has been behind the curve graphics wise so the hardware won't really be an issue for them as much as it is for the other two systems. As long as people are buying games for it, it will stick around.

I think that the you're looking at the Wii from the wrong perspective rothbart. Nintendo is not looking to grab market share from MS or Sony, they are going after the "others" market.

The "other" market would be children, most women, and older generations. This market isn't interested in the complexities of online gaming or intense graphics that the hardcore market is interested in.


Nope, I'm saying that when all these machines are replaced with their, well, replacements that the install base of the PS3 will be higher than the install base of the Wii. Do I think the Wii's popularity will peak with a higher install base than the PS3 and 360 combined before the ride's over? Quite possibly. Keep in mind that I think the PS3 will have MANY YEARS on the market after the Wii is replaced with a new system before the PS3 is... tortoise and the hare... tortoise and the hare...

Yea I was doing some casual reading and I read that they were planning on having it out for a ten year cycle. Seems like a really long stint if you ask me. If the other platforms produce a new system while the PS3 is still out though, wouldn't that mean that the other consoles could possibly have better parts and leave the PS3 stranded? I'm not sure if that's likely to happen, just curious.

Even if they're off by 25% that's still going to be longer than the Wii thrives... trust me... the Wii will not have a 7 year life cycle.

And yeah, new systems hit and the PS3 is in its prime (and much cheaper than now due to cost reduction redesigns) and the new systems are where the PS3/Wii are now and the 360 is just coming out of... struggling to get games that fully utilize their hardware.

I do respect that Sony has a long, long term plan for their systems. It is pretty incredible. I also like that they are supporting the PS2 still. I don't think that MS will have that kind of attitude about the 360 when their next console comes out. Time will tell.

That actually made me laugh at not realizing that before...
