This time last year, I was living out of an Extended Stay America (a hotel chain) while trying to finish my college education. For the first month and a half of the semester, I commuted from my house in Louisville to the University of Kentucky in Lexington (about an hour drive for you non-Kentuckians). However, after totaling my car on the highway, I was forced to find temporary housing in Lexington until graduation in December. It was during this time that I first stumbled upon a little site called Sarcastic Gamer. I was hooked after listening to one podcast. I began to visit the site hourly, consuming all the content that Doc, Dave, Lono and the rest of the crew managed to publish (favorite article: Volkov’s Bacon Salt trials).

As I visited the site with more frequency, I found myself becoming more interested in videogame journalism. I have been a core gamer since birth, but I always thought I would end up being a sports writer. The introduction of the SG community blogs provided an opening. I took the opportunity and ran with it. The rest is history. Now, instead of simply consuming content, I am an active contributor for this fine community of gamers. I thought writing for this blog was the best thing Doc could ever provide.

I was wrong.

This Saturday, I, along with thousands of gamers from across the globe, will be participating in a 24-hour gaming marathon to benefit pediatric cancer research. Extra Life, which started as a small idea, has grown into a truly phenomenal event. Not only have numerous smaller sites contributed to the cause, but heavy-hitters like Sumo Lounge, Codemasters, Best Buy and Electronic Arts have stepped up and made generous donations. Hell, Destructoid’s Jim Sterling has even pledged his own vocal chords for the all-day game-a-thon.

Though the outpouring of support has been amazing, the most surreal moment of this entire experience was hearing Doc breakdown on a recent podcast. I have never met the man, or even talked with him over the phone, but his amazing friendship with a brave young girl has moved me in ways I can’t explain. It is a moment that will remain with me for the rest of my days.

My daily routine consists of producing content for this site, eating, exercising, gaming, surfing the ‘net and going to work. It is pretty boring stuff. However, this weekend, I have a chance to do something special. I have a chance to help some truly heroic kids. Though I can’t possible understand the difficulties they must face each day, I marvel at their ability to live life to the fullest. These kids, not cancer, run their lives. That is a true sign of bravery.

I have to admit that I am a bit ashamed of myself. I take my life for granted. While I complain about the price of gas, there are numerous individuals around the globe that constantly battle this painful and deadly disease. Extra Life has really made me re-evaluate what is most important to me. I gotta tell you, it’s not some new release game or current-generation hardware.

Extra Life is not just about those brave individuals at the Texas Children’s Cancer Center. It is about finding a cure, so that future generations won’t have to worry about the threat of pediatric cancer. I want to ensure that my future kids, Dave’s future offspring and even Flava Flav’s future progeny aren’t taken by this horrid disease.

On Oct. 18, I will be playing videogames for an entire day. This Saturday, I will be proving that videogames are capable of good. However, most importantly, in one day, I will be doing what I love to raise money for pediatric cancer. Everyone talks about making a difference, but few actually follow through. This weekend is my chance to make a difference.

You bet your ass I’m going to follow through.
