View Full Version : Microsoft & Epic Screw X360 GOW Players

Last night, Microsoft & Epic officially announced GOW coming to PCs later this year.
Not surprisingly, it was also announced that the game will have achievements, extra maps and a map editor for the PC version. What was surprising was the announcement by CliffyB that the PC version will have 5 whole new single player chapters.
Wait, what?
Yeah, you heard right: The game will have what amounts to a whole new act's worth of chapters on the PC version. No mention of whether this content will ever be available for the X360. Now speaking only for myself, this really pisses me off.
GOW for PC wouldn't even be made if it wasn't for the fact that X360 players made it a highly popular game. Since it's popular, Epic and MS want to expand the market of the game and are bringing it out for PC. What do we get for supporting this game and making it popular? Shafted out of new single player content.
Secondly, the game for PC is going to come with all of the maps and gametypes MS has made us X360 players pay for - right out of the box. I can live with that to a degree. It's still a bitter pill to swallow, but not as egregious as adding new single player content us X360 owners will probably never see.
If GOW PC is the only way to play this new single player content, as far as I'm concerned, it will be Epic giving us gamers a huge middle-finger and telling us to shell out another 50 dollars for their "now complete" game.
Locke 07-11-2007, 03:28 PM Yea I definitely want that single player content. I want it free too since the XB360 gamers spent $60 on the game. $10 more than the PC gamers will be paying and they're getting so much more than we did.
Volkov 07-11-2007, 05:35 PM I say this strictly as a PC gamer.

PC gamers always get screwed by consoles. Whether its the controls, the content or the release date, we get treated like shit these days (minus the few devteams left that develop first for PC). I'm not saying its not for good reason; we really don't have the numbers. But today is a great day.

Uh, where did that information come from? The price hasn't been released yet, but I wouldn't doubt it if it was $50. But you gotta understand that the extra $10 goes towards licensing costs from Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft and shiet.
Altered_Weapon 07-11-2007, 09:43 PM I don't really care about this. I've played Gears and moved on.

It was an assumption. All 360 games are $60 cross platform or not. PCs are the only thing keeping a $50 tag... :(

That hurt.
I'm gonna go dress in black, grab some razors and go emo now.

I kid, I kid.

I think I agree with him. I am not a PC gamer or anything, I just dislike GoW, and I don't see why so many people seem to worship it.

So you miss an extra few hours of shooting the same high-def bad guys.
Meh
You got the game a year earlier than they did... Balances out.
I am not a PC gamer or anything, I just dislike GoW, and I don't see why so many people seem to worship it.
I thought I was the only one. I did play it a little, but I haven't even scratched the surface. It just sits there. While I play vegas.
I really do need to move on to another game, huh?

What if Bungie had added three new chapters to Halo 2 Vista. Could you imagine the sheer amount of internet hate Bungie would have received? They already got a lot of internet hate because they included achievements for H2V which were unobtainable to the Xbox crowd.
This sets a very bad precedent. Time spent waiting for a port is not an excuse to include new content to the same title but restrict the original players from playing it without them buying the entire title a second time on a different platform, especially given how much we sink into DLC.
Would you still be "meh" if Ubisoft decided to add another SP chapter or two to Rainbow Six: Vegas, but only for the PS3 version? I bet you'd be pissed, and rightly so.
For the record, I can't say I'm a GOW worshipper. According to my gamercard, last time I even played it was 4/20/2007. If this was any other game, I'd be making the exact same argument.

Na I beat it, got all the single player/ co-op achievements, and that is all I played of that game. I just don't see what it has that makes it better than awesome games like, uhh, Shadowrun? I really like that game, I love the magic and stuff. Reminds me of my CS days...

See, I have Vegas, but I haven't even played it once. I like to completely finish games before I move on, and I'm so close to fully completing Gears of War. 2 more achievements. :p But yeah, after I finish it, I'm setting it aside for a while...I have a lot of games I need to beat.
ghoti 07-13-2007, 05:43 AM What really made Gears a revelation to me was the online co-op. My brother and I went through the game in co-op, which just made the campaign a lot more fun. Being able to communicate and coordinate with your backup the whole way, instead of hoping that the AI won't **** you over by getting caught behind a rock, was refreshing as hell.
I really like the online deathmatches, too - which is a big deal. Normally, I stay clear of the online stuff in shooters because I just don't have the skill and reactions to survive a match, let alone win one. Gears' emphasis on strategy and teamwork means that I can actually win one occasionally, which is what's really kept me playing all this time.
I think everyone needs to get off the WHAAAAmbulance and wait for MS and Epic to announce if/when/how 360 gamers will have access to the content. With 360fanbois screaming for a sequel you know they will release the new content to you. It's just a matter of how.
ihateemo 07-13-2007, 05:26 PM You got the game a year earlier than they did... Balances out.
That's right, we did.
Adding extras for people who have waited for eternity for games to come to PC (Fable, Jade Empire, KOTOR, etc.) is not unprecedented.
Gamers who cry like this (there was SO much whinging about the PS3 Oblivion launching with Knights of the Nine included) a) clearly don't understand the mechanics of the gaming industry and b) are little cry babies who need to grow up.

Apples and Oranges, man. That's what you're comparing.
So Knights of the Nine was included with PS3 Oblivion. But it was made available for X360 and PC owners as well.
What Epic is doing here is adding exclusive single player content to PC and not making it available to X360 owners. (Before anyone tells me I'm wrong, please feel free to go read http://360.advancedmn.com/article.php?artid=10855 where both CliffyB and Mark Rein both state it is unlikely that the SP content will come to X360.)
I understand the mechanics of the gaming industry just fine, and I'm sorry you can't see the bad precedent this sets. Again, if Bungie added more SP content that was only available on Vista, I guarantee you this would have caused an internet explosion.
Do you like having your wallet raped to play content that should be available to all versions of a game? Because that's what Epic is doing. Read the article I linked carefully. CliffyB's statements lead me to believe that he doesn't think this game will sell to anyone other than hardcore Gearheads. He completely overlooks the inherent value of map editors, modding tools and all of the available multiplayer maps as the "base" PC package value and thinks the game will only sell if they include exclusive SP content for PC. You're forced, if you're a hardcore GOW fan, to go blow the chunk of change to buy the game and maybe upgrade your computer to play new content that should be available to everyone, not just one forking platform.
I'm sorry PC gamers have to wait a while to play ports. And yes, I admit, some ports are done well, others not so well and it's very hit and miss to be a PC gamer these days. However, this sense of entitlement that PC gamers have that they're "due" exclusive content on identical titles to their console brethren is ridiculous. Sounds like I'm not the one who needs to do a bit of growing up.
CaptainDDL 07-14-2007, 01:49 AM I have no issues with the PC edition of Gears of War getting the downloadable maps...we're going to get those for free this September... I just wish Epic would make the additional SP contents available to us 360 players, even if they have to charge for it.
CrAzE 07-14-2007, 06:04 PM Hmm....Well it better come to 360! I'm tired of Beating GOW on Insane.
I'm like Dave, but with a 360 with no Money to play on Live.
^(I Owned Dave!)^
Tiannam 07-15-2007, 08:37 PM Eh, but do they get Mass Effect and Halo 3 in a couple months?

but Doc... VEgas never gets old haha. Now are they giving refunds for the red pack since they made it free?

I also play games till I beat them usually but does that include the new achievements they added with the new map pack? I have stoped playing Gears until the new maps are free then I will play just to get achievements.
strommsarnac 08-07-2007, 10:10 AM I'm a diehard PC gamer. However, I just bought a 360 Elite last week (damn teenage son got me hooked on Crackdown and I got tired of waiting for his 360 :).
Something which needs to be made very clear. Dev'ing for a 360 is almost no different than dev'ing for a Windows PC. Many 360 games will easily work on a PC with slight changes (mostly relative to controls and network code).
Going from a PS2 to a PC is a port. The 360 is a stripped down PC.
Am I excited about GoW coming to the PC. No. I don't think any PC gamer is. From our perspective, GoW is not a good game. It's too constrained. This is why Halo didn't fair well on the PC.
I think this is why they're making a big deal about new content and map editor for the PC version.
One other thing. Anyone who thinks this wasn't planned from the start is naive. You can bet that every 360 game dev is coding to make sure they can release a PC version easily.
Now as to 360 gamers being screwed. From a diehard PC gamer's perspective I have to say - tough! It's true that PC gamers have been getting screwed over the years. I know why and it's all related to saving dev/support time and that MS/Sony/N have forced dev's to sign contracts forbidding "ports". Doesn't make it easier for us to swallow though.
I'm actually a bit amazed that MS is allowing so many ports recently. When the original Xbox was about to come out, it was made very clear to us longtime MCSE's that MS's vision was to completely remove gaming from the PC world. They really wanted to take PC's back to business machines and get a TV based "family" use machine to handle gaming/email/internet browsing.
Didn't pan out like they expected though.
What's sad is that there are still more PC gamers than if you combine ALL console gamers even though it's more expensive for us be one.
