View Full Version : Fallout 3 - When did you start the main quest?
Paradigm13 11-10-2008, 12:54 PM So I have yet to even begin the main quest (outside of incidentally talking to key people during my other quests) and was wondering how many side quests you guys did before you started the main quest. Or, like me, have you not even begun it yet?
I have gone through the Wasteland Survival Guide,Those!, and The Replicated Man quests. Now I'm thinking of doing the delivery to Arefu before heading off into the Wasteland on the main quest. Did anyone else follow this arc, or did you get cranking on the main story as soon as you popped out of the Vault?
Paladin58 11-10-2008, 01:19 PM I went your route, but have done a lot more stuff along the way.
balaamsafe 11-10-2008, 01:33 PM I picked up fallout today, but I realy want to take the slow route like i did with oblivion, all the sidequests, random exploration etc, i love it.

Good plan - the Wastland Survival Guide is a damn good way to get a lot of map locations opened up for fast travelling through the other quests, I'm already reaping the benefits of doing it this way.
crashtestgamer 11-10-2008, 03:08 PM yeh i went your route and did some side quests
W00T 100th post
Millakilla 11-10-2008, 04:19 PM I started it straight away but Do side missions whenever I get to a new town in the main quest, I have done the replicated man quest, The letter to arefu one, Most of the wasteland guide and part the way through a few others... In the main quest I'm up to part where Daddy runs off to the jefferson memorial...
I think I'm reasonanly far in the main quest so I'm starting to explore a little more and take up more side quests...
Necro9 11-10-2008, 04:25 PM I think I'm part of the 1% of gamers that powered right through the main quest before doing anything else.
The Beezs 11-10-2008, 07:20 PM Didn't even bother with the main quest until after I completed most of the other things to do in the game. It was great just walking around, surviving in the wasteland, pretending I had to actually live like that. Sitting around and waiting under a rock next to a Raider campfire, dropping dog meat into the fire pretending to cook. Fun bit of stuff it was, then I'd pick up Vengeance and look for something to cut in half with lasers.

Meeee, then I was disappointed when I couldn't continue after beating it

Same here man. I'm glad I had a few save points. I would have been mad if my only save was me locked in that ending area.
BonfireAg03 11-10-2008, 08:27 PM On my first playthrough, I powered through all of Megaton's quests, in addition to Those! prior to picking up the trail and heading downtown. Even that took me quite a while, because I took quite a while exploring through the Wasteland, checking out map markers that had been added, and just like Oblivion, I was sidetracked by the markers that appeared on my compass while trekking to those on my map.
Finally finished my first playthrough last week, and I've started a second, and the main quest will probably wait until I've devoured everything else that's available, if I even decide to pursue the main quest.
zbiggie 11-11-2008, 01:08 PM I was trying to do the side quests first. By avoiding the entire main quest, but then I accidentally stumbled upon where your dad is. So it auto completed the main quest for me up to that point. That really made me mad since I was missing a huge part of the story. And now anyone involved in the story pretended they knew me. Either way I cheated after this point by maxing out my stats. And just ran around for a bit. Now I started my new game, I know how to avoid the game.
blade2k6954 11-11-2008, 01:55 PM what level is everyone on? i'm only level 4 and thought it would be a good idea to wait before i go out and do the main quest is this a good idea or does it really matter?

I'm at level 8 and haven't quite begun the main quest yet, but I'm not sure it really matters. From what I hear, the enemies scale up to your level so that, for example, a super-mutant will always be about the same difficulty no matter what level you're at. I'm sure that the weapons and armor that you have will give you an advantage, though.

I think I'm in the same boat as you, bud. But not having actually started the main story, I'm not sure. When I do get around to it, I'm just going to continue with the first direction I got -
go see Three Dog in the Capital
and see what happens.
monkeychunkuk 11-11-2008, 02:46 PM I didnt i got out the vault and got so bored i traded it in for gow2!
Odins Messenger 11-11-2008, 02:52 PM I did the main quest right from the start and went through for awhile, I have stopped and am doing all the side quests I can now and am just leveling up.

I noticed Fallout always starts out slow, I remember I had Fallout 1/2 both times I got them they just got installed. I decided they were too boring or to hard right of the bat. Then they just sat on my shelf for a while. But after putting in 2-3 hours play the game gets really interesting thats all of them 1/2/3. Feel sorry you got rid of the game

No did you complete the following in his footsteps quest. If you did, you may have missed some of the story. Thats what happened. I walked into a vault. Didn't what it was and all of a sudden. The following in his footsteps quest what done. A load of bull.

hmmm i bet you went into vault 112 without visiting rivet city first!
zbiggie 11-12-2008, 08:41 PM hmmm i day yo went into vault 112 without visiting rivet city first!
english please, ?? 1 day you went into vault 112 without visiting rivet city first?? I assume that's what you said.
Yes I had not even entered the main Washington area, the closest I had gotten to it was the Super Duper mart but I had a Girdershire (I think that's how it's written) marker, but I still hadn't traveled to it. So I decided to make a trip, after which I noticed for the first time (dumb me) that there was a small unfilled arrow in my compass, so I decided to go to it.
And bam my whole quest to that point was ruined. Really wasteful considering I was only level 6-7. Either way reset now, no problem.
Of course the game stops making auto save points when leaving the Vault.

What? My game autosaves whenever I go through a door in to a new area. Though I tend to make a backup save when I enter a significant location. The joy of PC storage capacities. :)

Odins Messenger 11-13-2008, 11:00 AM My guy's level 18 right now and it's a ton of fun just running around discovering places and finding the bobbleheads and such. A lot of cool little places is in the Wasteland that you have to find. Anyone found the Alien Blaster yet?
VisMortua 11-13-2008, 12:03 PM Found the Alien Blaster myself. Haven't used it, yet because I don't want to waste the ammo just yet. That was cool running into that and the Oasis.

Well, that's good to hear, I felt like what I heard in my discussion with the doctor in Rivet City might have progressed the story further than I had progressed it myself, which, incidentally, is nowhere. Thanks for letting me know, dude, I know what NOT to do now.
