Well, this isn’t a review, so I won’t tell you that this game deserves 85%, 4/5 or B+, because then you’ll have no reason to read the rest of what I’ve written. Damn it! Rather let the Catwomen out of the bag there - still getting the hang of this writing malarkey. Now, I have to give you a reason to read the rest of this - my stunning wit maybe? Okay, maybe not. How about pictures - I’ll include pretty pictures. You like pictures don’t you? No!?! There’s no pleasing some people.

Speaking of which, I’ve heard a lot of people saying their not pleased with MKvDC. So, you’ll have to read on, to find out why they are wrong, why you shouldn’t miss out on this very enjoyable game, why it could be the best rental choice this Thanksgiving and why our American friends might want to import this game from the UK (for a change)

If you can’t leap tall buildings in a single bound, then you might want to jump into this…

While I’m not the biggest of Mortal Kombat fans, I have, since the days of the original arcade, admired what it was trying to do. Namely, be a mature and graphic fighting game. The blood that showered across the screen, with seemingly every punch and the intentionally horrific nature of the finishing moves made waves in the computer game industry. In case it passed you by or it was before you time, it’s pretty much single handedly, the reason that computer games have a age rating restriction, and back in the day made the Sega Genesis (Megadrive) the console for the cool older kids to have because it had the version with red blood in it, instead of the SNES’s grey sweat.

The other criticism made of the SNES version was that it gimped the Fatalities. The same has been said of this current version of Mortal Kombat, because they have toned them down to conform with a Teen rating in the US. My question is this - How much do you care? They are still brutal. Scorpion still burns people to a crisp, Liu Kang still kicks people in the face a stupid amount of times, people’s heads get squashed, bodies get blown up and skeletons regularly make an appearance when the flesh has been ripped from their bodies. Okay, so you don’t see people having their spine ripped out, but really, in this day and age of chainsaw bayonets and prostitute murdering gangsters, do they really hold, anything like, the shock value they once had? What would you have to do in a finishing move to make the national news these days?
You can make up your own mind about the Fatalities, but viewing this article (http://sarcasticgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=13705) that Lono put up a few days ago.

The one Fatality that deserves it’s own mention is that of the Joker’s. Who, just while we are on the subject, is worthy of a mention of his own. Heath Ledger may well of given us the best performance of the Joker, ever committed to film, but this is undoubtably the best version of the Joker I have ever seen in a computer game. He has some geniunely laugh out loud funny lines in the story mode and some brilliant funny and sadistic moves. His Fatality also caused the most controversy as it was deemed too brutal to be allowed onto a T-rated game and was cut from the US version of the game. (Which, as neither the PS3 or 360 version is region coded, is the reason you may want to import)

Originally, and in the UK version, the Joker pulls out a fake gun that reveals the word bang, before pulling out a real gun and shooting the unfortunate victim in the face. *I do find it kind of quite strange that you can have a gun shop on almost every corner and own as many guns as you like, but the second a clown does something funny with a gun in a game, that’s too much. I’m much more comfortable playing with guns in games, than playing people playing with guns in real life.

The main thing going for this game is that the fights are, quite simply, good fun. Controls are solid, the characters are well balanced and gameplay is fun. It feels good to pit age old enemies like Superman & Lex Luthor against one another, and is equally fun when investigating the freshly made feuds, such as the epic battles between Batman & Sub Zero. It doesn’t re-invent the fighting genre (we fighting fans will have to pin all our hopes on SFIV for that one) but it is very well polished and most importantly enjoyable.

Add to that, the Klose Kombat, Freefall Kombat and Test-Your-Might mini games that help break up the action well. They can seem a little clunky or unfair in one player but come into their own in two player and with two people that know what they are doing actually become more fun with time.

When just talking about the fighting system itself, I have to say that this is the most fun I’ve ever had with any Mortal Kombat title - and the most fun I’ve got from any fighting game in some time.

Many Forums were filled with comments like “How can the Joker fight Superman - That’s stupid!” Well fear not lore lovers, that is all nicely explained in story mode. Okay it’s not a detailed scientific explanation, with slides and stuff, but it is immeasurably better job than Soul Caliber IV’s effort at crossover explanation - “One day Yoda was out wondering in the forest when suddenly…Mr Lucas turned up and offered us a sack full of Star Wars bucks to break our game!”

There is also a power up mechanic in the game called the Rage meter. It the standard sort of fill bar, release temporary super super powered character kind of thing but works well in making for some close run battles. I also think it was a really nice touch to give an explanation to the Rage meter in the story. It also shows you why people like Batman & Superman end up fighting each other as well.

Some reviews have criticised the story mode for being too short. While I’d admit that, compared to a lot of games, 6 hours is short (3 hours MK, 3 hours DC) considering the amount of cutscenes and when compared to any other fighting game it more than holds it’s own. That said, with only the arcade mode to battle through, you are only going to get your money’s worth, if you get a lot out of this game in two player. Thats not a problem in my house, and with the number of house guests and family visiting over the festive period it may be the ideal way to vent frustrations and help settle those little arguments - like who gets the last piece of Turkey.
