Here in the UK it's about $6.76/galon. Our gov't takes about 70% (65% from tomorrow) on that price though. What's the American fuel tax?

I have a question. Why are people so stupid with gas? We needed to fill up yesterday when the lowest gas was $1.52. The gas station with that price was filled up out to the street. We drive down further and find a gas station at $1.53...desolate. We were the only ones there.
