View Full Version : Ugh.... I need a job
Killgraft 12-02-2008, 11:34 AM Well I just graduated school last month. I didnt have a job all thru school (8 months) because I had no time, and Im finding it really hard to get one now. My experience mostly lies in waitering, so I have been hitting up most of the restaurants around my area and I have found nothing. nada. crap.
Its around this time I realized that I have NEVER found a job by myself. Every place I have ever worked at I never even applied. My friends just told me there was a waiter position or something available where they worked, and I showed up the next day in uniform. I have never not had a job before for more then a week before I went to school, and I have been working since I was around 13 steadily.
So, I have been all around my town going to random places asking if they are hiring and no one has any openings. I dont know if its the Economy or if Im not doing something right or what.
If anyone has any tips or ideas or any websites or something I can go to to maybe help out my poor ass, that would be greatly appreciated.
Niyon 12-02-2008, 11:45 AM Well, I will say the economy isn't helping right now. Truly, at the place where I work, I would love to have new people come in, but I'm not in charge of that. We've been told by our corporate office to not accept apps (even though I know that is against the law).
But, that aside. I've been told that the best thing to do is physically turn in applications to where you want to work. And not just once, but go in every few days and turn in another one. Yea, it seems stupid; but it shows you are committed to working there and also determined to get the job.
I know snagajob.com is a site that worked out fairly well for my mom. When my parents split, she used either that one or monster.com (can't remember off hand), to land a job at Hallmark stocking cards at the Walmart in town.
Hopefully this helps you out some.
Millakilla 12-02-2008, 11:50 AM I found it hard to get a job After leaving school and college, Every place I applied to came up with nothing until eventually I was basically handed a job where my step mum works... If it wasn't for her I doubt I would even have a job now:lol:
Anyway, This is probably one of the worst times to be looking for a job, Because everyone has already been employed for the christmas rush and after christmas employers will be trying to get rid of people because they will be too over staffed from all the christmas workers...
There really isn't anything I can suggest other than keep looking, But you really have picked a bad time tbh... Sorry :(
if you are looking for "just a job", then you're best bet in an economy like this I would think would be something in the service sector...and to get 1 of those, you'll probably need to make your face seen by applying in person where you can.
If you are looking for a "career", then your best bet would be to find something specialized but not obscure, and apply for those career paths.... for example, something IT related like a help desk position or an onsite tech position.
viatrophy 12-02-2008, 12:55 PM I heard that prostitution is good money, thought about that?
you could always be a "lab rat" and sign up to let medical experiments be done to you...
who knows, maybe you could be the REAL 6 million dollar man....
We have the technology....we CAN rebuild him!!
BlinkinCard41 12-02-2008, 01:03 PM Hold on a second... where in Hoboken does school end in September?
Right now is a pretty down time for the economy, so finding a job would be pretty hard. I should honestly start looking, as well. I've got a job now, but the business declared bankruptcy (for the second time) and is finally closing early January. Now is the worst time to find a job, though, because everyone has already hired their seasonal help and don't really need any new people until possibly the summer.
darkpirategirl 12-02-2008, 01:09 PM Well I had to quit my job for college and I am definitely sorry I did. But I had no choice. :( I can only hope once I leave college, there will be businesses willing to hire.
Good luck to you.
8bitBass 12-02-2008, 01:28 PM You got a degree from school, why not look for a job that matches your degree? Why go back to being a waiter?
Definately use www.monster.com or perhaps use a headhunter if you want to get in to a certain industry etc.
Create a nice resume as well. Print it on nice cardstock paper.
nopain14 12-02-2008, 01:38 PM time are tough right now but you sound like a smart guy i would offer you a job where i work but nothing is open

Well I went to school in NY, an acting program. Honestly Im unsure if I want to even be an actor anymore. I still have a few small projects coming up with ex-directing students, but nothing that pays anything well enough to make a living off of.

Gir15 12-02-2008, 10:07 PM this economy sucks to find jobs, I want to buy things but I need money, try some horrible places like Fast Food Restaurants, you'll get min. wage but at least money comes in on a regular basis
Cam-Dog 12-02-2008, 10:16 PM Join the air force thats what i plan to do.
joining one of the armed forces is actually a GREAT suggestion...it's a guaranteed job when you are done...and if president Obama keeps to his word, things will get quiet for the armed forces soon.
i know if i wouldn't have gotten a basketball scholarship, I was going to join the Air Force academy or West Point myself...I even met with our Senator for it.
umanouski 12-02-2008, 11:03 PM Comcast is always hiring and i might be able to help you get a job there, as i am a tech in NJ and if you mention my name and get hired i get an incentive...

yes mention umanouski and they won't look at you funny at all
but i'd go with what's been mentioned, drive (or take a bus) to EVERY business you want a job at and turn in applications like crazy, multiple ones always helps, my best advice is do it all in a day. Example fill out the application and turn it in all in the same day, because when a prospective employer checks all those dates it's to see how long it took to fill out, faster = more reliable, more dedicated, and typically more intelligent employee
EDIT: hope that helps
Bryce 12-02-2008, 11:38 PM I've got a job for you, find the Jackal; and kill him!

hahahahaha,
seriously though be productive, gym/library helps coz u stay fit and gives a good impression on interveiws and library is good coz u get to read books and keeps your mind active.
i'm waiting for the next semester to start and i'm just working out and going to the library, set sleeping routines (i.e. not sleeping late and getting plently) so when you do find a job it's not difficult to transition into a work schedule.
and if nothing get part time jobs and look in the paper. 7-11 is basically just watching the till and kicking out hobos,, so plently of time to search for a new job.
