Atari revealed yesterday that it would be publishing the first “Ready 2 Rumble” game in nearly a decade. “Ready 2 Rumble Revolution,” which is slated for a spring 2009 release for the Wii, will be the first game in the over-the-top boxing franchise since “Ready 2 Rumble Boxing: Round 2″ released for multiple platforms in 2000.

As a fan of arcade brawlers, you might expect me to be happier than a kid on Christmas morning. Honestly, for half an hour, I was ecstatic. Then I learned that “Revolution” will not be a revival of the classic boxing franchise. Rather, it appears that AKI, which developed “Def Jam Vendetta” and “WWF No Mercy,” is going to simply slap the “Ready 2 Rumble” label on a craptastic flail fest.

I had high hopes for “Revolution,” but not anymore.

You might think that I am being too hard on the game, especially since I have never played it. Generally, I would agree that one should play a game before declaring it to be doomed, but the writing on the wall seems all too clear.

According to a Gamasutra report (http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=21326) published yesterday, “The game will feature 18 boxers caricatured after celebrities, and enable players to punch and move with Wii Remote and Nunchuk gestures, similar to the boxing game in Wii Sports.”

Let’s analyze that paragraph.

First, the game will feature a control scheme “similar to the boxing game in ‘Wii Sports.’” For those who have never played the popular pack-in game, let me give you the 411 on the motion-controlled brawler. It sucks. It isn’t remotely fun because every single match devolves into a flailing contest. Wii Boxing, as I like to call it, takes absolutely no skill. If you can flail effectively, then there is a good chance you will emerge victorious. I have hoped and prayed that I would never be forced to use that control scheme ever again. Unfortunately, it appears that both “Punch-Out!!” and “Revolution” will require me to pretend that the Wii Remote and Nunchuk are boxing gloves.

Instead of forcing motion controls upon gamers, AKI should provide various options. For instance, player movement could be mapped to the Nunchuk’s analog stick, while the “C” button could block and “Z” could initiate a “RUMBLE” combo. The “B” button on the Wii Remote could punch and the D-pad could be used to determine the location of strikes and blocks (down would be low, up would be high).

“Revolution” will also “feature 18 boxers caricatured after celebrities.” Great, instead of Afro Thunder and Boris “The Bear,” we get a handful of goofy brawlers based on current pop culture icons. I for one cannot wait…to ignore this game when I walk into a local Best Buy. Our friends at Destructoid have reported (http://www.destructoid.com/atari-preview-tour-ready-2-rumble-revolution-112825.phtml) that the likenesses of Brad Pitt, The Notorious B.I.G., Will Ferrell and Jack Black will all appear in the game. I have embedded the first gameplay video below, in which you can clearly see Shaun White (”Red Dermato”) getting knocked around by some guy with a fierce set of man boobs.

I agree, that game has a big chance of failing.
