For those of us who are not lucky enough to live somewhere that stays warm during the winter, the approaching snowflakes herald a dark time filled with freezing rain, hail, snow, Canadian Arctic Attack Pigs (C.A.A.P.’s for short) and a bloated heating bill. After the holiday season ends, it seems the only thing to look forward to is spring, when the snow will finally melt away and the C.A.A.P.’s retreat to their icy lairs once more.
However, the winter need not be so bleak, In fact, a nice “I think I’ll take the snowmobile to work” type of winter is probably the best kind of weather a gamer could hope for.
Find out why winter and games go together so well, after the jump!
The summertime is a great time of year to be sure, but it’s also filled with all sorts of “outdoor activities” and “fresh air.” Meh. Sure you can get some gaming going, but for how long? It’s so freaking nice outside every semi-friend, casual acquaintance, younger sibling of a guy you met once and everyone in between may take it upon themselves to “stop by” or “see if you want to do something.” Sheesh.
Fall is the work horse of the seasons. You have classes to go to, work to do, and precious little free time. Which is inevitably divided between friends, family, and gaming. Damn real life always gets in the way!
Winter though, now that’s the season for me I tell ya. Once the weather gets bad enough, outdoor activities drop to a minimum (unless you like winter sports…I’m going to hell because I’m a Canadian who does not like hockey I know), and even basic travel is conducted on the “do I want it enough to waste 20 minutes scraping ice off the car?”,* policy.
Your gaming time has increased to its highest point of the year and you literally have nothing better to do but plop yourself down in front of the TV/Monitor and get your game on. Rock a pair of old sweat pants and a Led Zeppelin sweat shirt you found in the recycle bin outside work. Your aiming for maximum warmth plus comfort. Don’t worry, its winter time, nobody will ever know. Get straight barbarian with it and give up shaving as it takes up time and I’m convinced having a ZZ Top length beard DOES keep me warm and for some reason makes me a better gamer.
Winter time is multiplayer paradise (minus the inevitable Xbox Live downtime ever holiday season). Since everyone is at home, staying warm, you can finally get friends together online at the same time and have some great matches. Form a clan and spend your days obliterating the softies who live in warmer climates. “It’s 34 degrees Celsius there?! You SOB!”
No longer is your cramped little office super hot from two PC towers running 24 hours a day. Instead, a wondrous balance has been struck. What I like to call “the PC temperature sweet spot.”
