I recently had the pleasure of playing a fairly new game from Ignition Entertainment. You probably remember them from such popular games as, “Elf Bowling 1 & 2″, “Monster Bass Fishing,” and other obscure titles such as “Obscure: The Aftermath.”* It doesn’t get much more obscure than having a game named Obscure…but I digress. So,imagine my excitement when I got my hands on Tornado for Nintendo DS. This game released on October 21st which was the same week as Fable II and probably the reason I until now have missed out on this gem of a game.
Game reviewers all over have given this game an average rating of 5.0 but this isn’t a review and if you follow the little jump thingy you’ll see what it is that I liked about this game.*
For one fleeting moment I considered leaving this page blank, silently saying there was nothing I liked about the game. Then, of course, Lono would kill me and we wouldn’t want that, now would we?
Anyway, the story line is simple…a Dark Prince covets everything on Earth and somehow steals it with a black hole. I didn’t realize black holes were capable of that. In the process of sucking up everything on Earth, the Dark Prince also scoops up Toki and his friends, the Cosmic Cleaners.
Toki, who looks a lot like Sonic the Hedgehog, and his friends decide to save the items from Earth by sucking them up and transporting them back with a Tornado. Imagine Katamari Damacy, but with cyclones and without the fun. They even have the gift boxes like Katamari that you collect, except in Tornado they contain soundtrack pieces for you to collect and change the music in the game. Thrilling huh? You scoop up people and trees and houses, all while endlessly circling your stylus to keep the tornado going with the occasional blow/dash move, which really requires you to blow into your Nintendo DS and look like an idiot.
By the way, I do not recommend playing this game after you have had shrimp scampi for lunch. Don’t ask.
I found the game frustrating for two main reasons. The view they give you is horrible and you can’t adjust it. Also if you fail a level, and you WILL fail many times before you get it right, there is no continue option. The game ends and you have to go all the way back to the start screen to try again, and again, and again.
Since it is rated E for everyone, I thought maybe a younger person would be able to play it and possibly have fun with it. So I tossed the game to my team of Junior Gamers in the house and they too had a rough time. Our general opinion on the game??
It sucks. Get it? Because it’s about Tornadoes…so it sucks….eh whatever.
