That’s right. Tomorrow. At long frickin’ last, PlayStation Home moves into open beta stage on December the 11th and with it brings a whole heap of content if you’re interested. Frankly, I think you should be.
Hit the jump for all the details!
Just to make it clear one more time, the Home open beta is out tomorrow as a free download. You just click the icon in the XMB and it downloads, and that’s it. For free. Second Life-lite awaits you, in friendly PlayStation form.
On day one, you’ll be able to buy licensed Diesel clothes and Ligne Roset furniture for your Home Space (nope, I’ve never heard of them either), with prices ranging from free of charge to €1.50 ($1.94) for the clothes - Yay for virtual dress-up! - and an unknown amount for the furniture.
Other sponsored goodies come in the form of the Red Bull Island - where one can take part in a virtual Air Race Challenge - and a heap of content from Eurogamer and gadget website Hexus. As a sign of what to expect in future, Paramount will even offer up a bunch of exclusive Watchmen content (including t-shirts and apartment furniture) in the new year, along with opportunities to chat to the cast and crew of the film.
With the NDA lifted I suppose I can tell you all about Home. Back in August the first stage of the closed beta I took part in was pretty empty and devoid of anything fun to do; the bowling alley saw you sit down while your ball threw itself down the alleyway. I suppose that since the expansion of the beta, where 100,000 new members came flowing in, it’s gotten a little more interesting; but to be honest it’s still not that much of a fuss.
Certainly, I can spew out all the PR crap all over again like I did above, but those were the only remotely interesting things I could find in the press release that dropped into my inbox this morning. The fact of the matter is, unless you can find some truly interesting people to chat with (and I must concede there are a couple) Home sucks.
If you want an example of how interesting Home is, here’s what I’ve done since 1.02 (the ‘open’ open beta) was released:
Played 3 games of bowling, 2 games of pool, had 2 shots of arcade game Carriage Return (it sucks) and 2 games of the echochrome arcade game (it sucks too, but you get a free outfit…which sucks)
Posted 3 notices in a Sarcastic Gamer Clubhouse and gave away one naff copy of Ridge Racer 7 to see if anybody was actually paying attention (two people did, hats off to you)
Chatted to one PSN friend (considering 10 of them are in the beta, that’s bad…I blame the fact I’ve spent no time on Home at all)
Bought a jacket because it resembled my own
I’m stopping the list because I’m frankly struggling to think of anything else to add to it: that’s the problem with Home. It’s friggin’ boring, and I’m blaming it on the lack of music in the place. The US Home lobby has a music player in the middle of it which helps with the atmosphere. Tweeting birds and jets overhead in the European one do not.
The thing is, if you’re chatting with friends and having a good conversation, Home’s pretty good; maybe your judgement will be different from mine. If you can chat with some friends and have a game of bowling (if you can ever get a lane) then it’s great. If you’re on your own, looking for something to do, I simply advise you to go and play a game. A 3D extension of the XMB it is not.
So then, Home. Friggin’ boring, but it’s out tomorrow. Make of that what you will.
