What ever happened to this great franchise?

I remember getting a sound card for Wing Commander 2 and being blown away by the voice pack added to this game.

I spent so much time trading in Wing Commander Privateer.

I bought a Alienware PC just for Wing Commander 3. It had good fmv video and graphics were phenomenal.

Even the last one, Prophecy, was a strong flight sim.

First they make a movie that is s bad and doesn't really follow the WC story. Now it has become a second rate XBL game.

Anyone else have fond memories of Wing Commander?

Wing commander has to be one of my favorite franchises of all time. EA sadly now owns the rights to it from when they acquired Origin. They recently released the abomination that was Wing Commander Arena on the XBLA. However the chances of them doing a "real" wing commander game are sadly pretty slim to none.

There just aren't many space sims being made any more. Which for me is a sad thing. Some of my best gaming experiences ca,e om the space sim genre with titles like X-Wing, Tie Fighter, I-War2, the X series (which is still going pretty strong), Freespace 2 etc.

Wing Commander: Armada is my absolute fav of the series. It was just incredible in split screen using the map to play turnbased fleet building, planet conquering, mining etc... then proper flight battles. So good.

I don't know why I never tried Armada.

I also bought Wing Commander for the Genesis but the controls were not nearly as good.

What ever happened to the EA Retro Pack that was going to include the original Wing Commander for the PSP? I might pick up the PSP if this ever came out.

Never mind I just saw it came out and got a very low review

Games Radar

"The biggest tragedy in EA Replay, though, has to be the two Wing Commander games. Again, these are based on the SNES versions, not the fantastic PC games. And while the SNES versions were actually quite respectable back in the day, the PSP's tiny screen, streaking issues, and low frame rate combine to make these two classics pretty much unplayable. Dammit."

Wing Commander does not belong on hand-helds, or in a museum. It belongs on a pc or console. Give us more!

It wasnt rated that high and the single player was pretty dire and rushed (it was basicly a filler game to give them money between 2 and 3 I think if I remember right), but the multiplayer is the best local multiplayer the PC had back then by a mile. Kilrathi ftw!

....though I would MUCh rather see IWar3 than a new Wing Commander. IWar is the single greatest space game *ever*, even if they werent given time to finish the economy system. The flight model alone puts it so far ahead of the Freespace series its almost unbelievable that Freespace is given more credit. Freespace is an brilliant cinematic game, but IWar2 is an awesome game game.

I'd love to see one of the Wing Commanders on XBL Arcade.

I was so shocked by the Admiral's betrayal in WC4. That was intense.

Prophecy really sucked, though. Best to wipe that game under the rug.

Chris Roberts made the Star Lancer series after origin which was awesome -- soviets vs. NATO in space, that sort of thing. The sequel was freelancer and was a lot more like wing commander privateer, though it gets boring fast. I can't actually play starlancer anymore because my computer doesn't have an old style joystick plug and i don't feel like buying a USB joystick that i'll barely use. :(
