View Full Version : Licensed Games
ShockwaveLover 11-02-2007, 11:29 PM Like it or not, licensed games, based on movie, comic book etc stories seem to be here to stay. But are they worth making? As far as I can tell, the only licensed games that have done well are the Star Wars games, The Darkness, Spiderman 2 and Hulk: Ultimate Destruction. Almost every single other one (Fantastic Four, innumerable Star Trek games and Pirates of the Caribbean etc) has sucked. Feel free to disagree, what are your thoughts?
PacManPolarBear 11-03-2007, 01:29 AM Well I have said before that people need to just stop buying this crap. A pox on the casual gamer yet again! The only reason they keep making them is because people do buy them. I mean Transformers was by far my number one choice for worst game this year...well maybe not number 1, but close. But it still had decent sales. Any comic book game is gonna suck, minus one or two old X-men games and one Spiderman title. Star Trek and Star Wars are so hit or miss it is insane.
There are a few exceptions, but none of them are "great games", just decent.
But people see a name they like and just gobble that crap right up. Yum Yum Poo! Chronicles of Riddick is the only one that really shined as an example..unfortunately it never caught on. People want to pump out this trash as fast as possible to cash in, like movies with a close game release.
As long as initial sales and a famous name counts for more than quailty and long term sales, we will continue to see tons of low budget trash. Capitalism can be a real bitch sometimes.
Digitalistic 11-03-2007, 01:29 PM I completely forgot that The Darkness was a licensed game.
It was that damn good.
Ala Douche 11-03-2007, 01:50 PM x-wing vs. tie fighter > all
chrispenny 11-03-2007, 02:35 PM The SW series are really the only movies turn games that I've gotten into.
I don't mind the idea of it so much, as long as it's done well (which is almost never). It pisses me off when they take a great movie and turn it into a shit game, or even more so if they take a great game and turn it into a shit movie.
I was at the cinema's last night and saw that "Hitman" the movie is coming out. I almost screamed "OOOH HELL NO!".
SWSilentkiller 11-03-2007, 03:22 PM I don't know Hitman might not be a bad movie. Anyway yeah most licensed games suck, although Marvel vs. capcom 2 was good
Garwalker 11-04-2007, 08:19 AM Some of the kid games have good licenses like Cars but for me Star Wars and Spiderman 2 are the only ones that I can think of.
V3NOM 11-04-2007, 12:05 PM They're almost never good games, so I never buy them. The reason that they stay around is because, no matter how bad the game turns out, the devs and the publishers still make money by cashing in on the franchise. My 9 year-old stepbrother is one of the people that falls into this trap, despite my warnings to the contrary. He bought Cars and Eragon for the 360 and has barely played either of them. Waste of $120.
grunt birthday clown 11-04-2007, 12:07 PM actually star trek game's were preaty good at least the ones i played...but lisenced games suck
Chexd 11-04-2007, 04:30 PM XIII was a licensed game I think. Wish they did a sequel. That game was amazing!
ShockwaveLover 11-21-2007, 10:56 PM I recently discovered that the only thing worse than a game based on a movie is a movie based on a game. Take a bow, Uwe Boll.
x-wing vs. tie fighter > all
If it's half as good as X-Wing Alliance, I'll have to see about getting it.
Black Lace 11-22-2007, 08:33 PM The Darkness was licensed? That would explain why it had a storyline. I think that has been my favourite 360 game so far!
ShockwaveLover 11-22-2007, 08:38 PM The trouble is, most licensed games take that storyline and turn it into a medicore game. See Pirates of the Carribbien, or any Batman game.
Black Lace 11-22-2007, 08:56 PM Sad but true.

Hitman is probably the best game to movie transition... I wasn't surprised seeing as the idea isn't that hard to pull of... Well I wasn't that into the games so I don't know if it resembled the game that much. But if I didn't already know it was based on a game, I'd still say it was a decent movie.

I have actually been hearing ok things about Hitman, which REALLY pleases me.
Nobody has been able to go into great detail about it for me, but still, I'm glad to hear it's not a dud.
Chemical_Burn 11-23-2007, 03:23 AM The true problem between putting a game to screen and vice versa are the makers. Ive read about it countless times and countless times have I agreed. Filmers just have a different perspective on the view and most of them probly don't really play the game. Unless one can view and have knowledge on both fronts could bring it a big success. Transformers was HUGE on the bigscreen but it lacked horribly when they turned it into a videogame.
Silent Hill was also quite well done but the slight changes to it started to drift off from the game and I hate it when movies decide to side path from what the game portrade. Street Fighter... hell I dont even need to go there, it practically has pulled the exact opposite from the game. Game being a complete success and film being a total disaster. I do admit though they had a decent cast with better then your average portrail of characters from game to film trying to mimic up to their looks/costumes.
If people want to make a successfull game to movie convert they should follow as close to the video game as its possible, cause why change what people loved in the first place? When you start to drift from what people love you anger the mob! Its only in extreme cases where changes make better from the video game... and I do mean extremely & rare.
I apologize now for any screw ups of spelling/grammer or any typical sence as I am tierd and im about to head into my cozy bed for some eye shut.

Huh... I guess I should rent it and check it out...
