View Full Version : Last Minute Contender for my PS3 GOTY
MightyMutt 01-02-2009, 07:30 AM While MGS was most peoples choice for PS3 Game Of The Year, It wasn't mine. Undoubtedly, a very good game but personally I haven't played that much of it (I'm part way through Act II) It might be that I haven't seen enough of it, to motivate me to go back and finish it off. Either way, since buying it to play for Extra Life, it's remained untouched and so can't really be my personal PS3 GOTY.
So until 29th December LBP was my GOTY. On the 28th of December I got Valkyria Chronicles and despite a slow start, quickly became my favourite game that I've played so far on my PS3. I know Lono has gone on about it already and that it has been well reviewed and so I won't bore you with doing a whole in depth review but just wanting to reiterate that this is a great game that is passing a lot of people by and is consequently being sold cheaply, ( I got mine for £25) which as it's a big game anyway makes it an even better value purchase.
While the gameplay is definitely a original blend of some old favourites and does feel fresh and interesting, it is a little difficult to describe. The best I've come up with is that it's a mix of JRPG, Advance wars and a 3rd person shooter. It comes together to form a cohesive whole with some new and interesting approaches to gameplay, that just happens to fill a big void in my gaming library. I strongly recommend it to any fan of tactical gaming.
Gilarus 01-02-2009, 08:50 AM I do think that Valkyria Chronicles is a good game (I've only played the demo), But it is quite slow. This game would be my GOTY too if it wasn't turn based
dankster 01-02-2009, 09:04 AM I loved the demo and I'm going to get this sometime after I put down Fallout 3. I just don't know when that will be -- maybe another month or so.

If it wouldn't be turn based, I wouldn't even consider buying it.
Because then it would be a bad TPS

True, but then again, I'm not buying it as it is. I guess it's just not my type of game, but I can see why some people would like it.
Ala Douche 01-04-2009, 11:10 PM if it wasn't turn-based, it wouldn't be a tactical game at all and as vent said, just another shooter. if you don't like tactical games, then there's little chance of you liking this one, but from what i've played, i absolutely love it.
SWSilentkiller 01-04-2009, 11:15 PM I played the demo, and it was pretty good. I'll probably buy it when it comes down in price.
Kilzombie 01-04-2009, 11:21 PM I've got it, and yes it is one of the best games of 08, this game is tough too, and some of the battles are awesome. I don't usually play JRPGs, or Tactical games either, but I've fallen in love with this one.

Hey mate, was that price online as I wouldn't mind getting it and games are pretty expensive here in Oz.
PopTrogdor 01-05-2009, 06:39 AM with valkyria for me it got hard really quickly lol, im in the desert level and theres way too many snipers, and they reinforce ever time and they are clever!
Keith K 01-05-2009, 07:54 AM Dont worry about snipers. Pile everyone behind your tank and move up on the west side of the map. Kill Lancers as you come to them and keep an engineer right behind the Eidelweiss to keep the tank repaired.
When you get in range of the base the snipers are camped at, just hit them all with a mortar to kill them all at once. Then quickly claim the camp to avoid any further reinforcements from arriving.
Once you have the camp, retreat all snipers and replace them with lancers and move up, still behind your tank. Take theirs out one at a time, zigzagging your tank around the obstacles until you get to the northern camp.
MightyMutt 01-05-2009, 08:04 AM @ Poptrogdor & Kilzombie - Yes, it's a tough game - if you make one mistake, it can cost you big time. The one piece of advice I would give is to make sure you do all the skirmishes, so that you can afford to level up as much as possible.
For that desert level you talk about Poptrogdor, you will be at a real disadvantage if you don't have a half way decent sniper (which I generally found to be the least useful class, except on that level) Two of the next three levels after that, I found to be way harder - but all the more rewarding for getting them right.
Hey mate, was that price online as I wouldn't mind getting it and games are pretty expensive here in Oz.
Sorry I bought mine in a ye good olde 'brick & mortar' shop - Of which I have seen a few shops (Zavvi & Game) selling it £25, but for whatever reason most online retailers seem to be selling it for £40+ - Thats if they have it at all. Even if you do end up paying more for it, as long as your a fan of Turned Based Strategy games (that doesn't mind a bit of originality) then I think you will get your money's worth, as it's a big game with room for replayability.
JRPGs, or Tactical games either, but I've fallen in love with this one.
This game took me a bit by surprise as despite other people's praise, I had become very tired with both JRPG's and tactical games (although I'm mainly tired of RTS's, as they seem to be all about time management and not so much about tactics) This game straddles the two genres, as well as mixing in the 3rd person real time combat and in doing so manages to create a game that feels refreshing and comfortable. It did not take me very long to fall in love with this game too.
Killgraft 01-05-2009, 04:16 PM Just got it. Likin it so far. I think this game coulda worked well with online multiplayer. Maybe for a sequel...?
Ognawk 01-05-2009, 05:41 PM Funnily enough, I just picked it up today because I'd heard good things about it. I'm not too far into it, but it's very good so far.
Ala Douche 01-07-2009, 05:16 PM For that desert level you talk about Poptrogdor, you will be at a real disadvantage if you don't have a half way decent sniper (which I generally found to be the least useful class, except on that level)
no way, snipers are one of my most useful classes. i always keep 2 in my squad to take out scouts and shocktroopers as i advance. the only thing i wish is that they had more AP. it's annoying how little they can move at a time.
i'm on chapter 7 (just after the desert level). i died once in the forest, because i didn't notice the Edelwiess was in range of the second anti-tank cannon as well as the tank and it blew up in one enemy phase (after about a half hour into the battle).
i absolutely love it, but i wonder... do you ever get more than 9 people in your squad at a time, or is that the limit?
MightyMutt 01-08-2009, 02:27 AM do you ever get more than 9 people in your squad at a time, or is that the limit?
I've wondered that. I've had less, but not more. Be nice to have a battle with all 20 at some point.
I think this game coulda worked well with online multiplayer. Maybe for a sequel...?
I agree, hopefully for a sequel - if one ever gets made
PopTrogdor 01-08-2009, 06:19 AM lol im now on the level with the massive tank...god damn. got four of the turrets down then he just turned round and kill nearly everyone...
Razma 01-08-2009, 01:39 PM In thought, I don't know how anyone could make a game their game of the year. Honestly, we've been graced with plenty of good titles (though some may dispute the validity of that point) so hats off to those that can find their favourite little disc. But for those that can't (like me) allow me to ramble:
Tom Clancy's EndWar
Saints Row 2
MGS4
Resistance 2
LittleBigPlanet
BF: BC
Fallout 3
BioShock (for the PS3 of course)
FarCry 2
COD5
Naruto: Storm
Ala Douche 01-08-2009, 02:44 PM out of those, the only one that comes close to valkyria chronicles is Fallout 3, but it falls short because of the ending...
Killgraft 01-10-2009, 01:42 PM Im about to do that desert level right now. Right now my only real gripe with the game is the cut scenes. So damned many. This would be okay if the story was okay, but unfortunately the story unfolds with little to no regard for common sense or justification for anything anyone does, the dialog is flat as a pancake, the voice acting is horrid, and the characters are about as interesting and compelling as one of the bumpers from pong. Actually, thats unfair. I would much rather see more of that thing from Pong then anyone in this game.
That is until I get into the actual gameplay, and then I form little relationships with most of my characters, and got to like them based on how they fared and talked and things of that nature. I am much more interested in Hannes, one of my shocktroopers, cause he kicks the f**king s**t out of anyone he comes into contact with, and cause his name is f**king Hannes. I would watch an entire movie if it was about Hannes, Especially if it was called "Hannes kicks the F**king S**t out of a whole bunch of people and then bones Alicia".
Ahmm. Anyway.
Also, on the Topic of Snipers, while they are useful, I wish they could either walk more per turn or have a smaller reticle for aiming (seriously, 50% misses it seems like, thats why I only bring one per map) to make them a little more balanced.
Ala Douche 01-10-2009, 06:34 PM hmm, i think the acting is good and the story is interesting... i've gotten used to terrible actors in RPGs, and actually noticed how much i liked the acting in this...
that desert level is a pain. i had gone down to the wire with my guys (evacuated about 4 people who were downed) and when i was on the last radiator, i MISSED with the grenade! that was annoying, to say the least, as i ended up dying and having to do the whole thing over. i was pissed at myself.
Killgraft 01-10-2009, 08:46 PM Just got to mission 7, I love how the game went from Cakewalk to throwing-my-cat-out-the-f**king-window hard in about 5 seconds. Also, there is no f**king way to restart a level that you may have botched outside of waiting to die or restarting the whole f**king game(Which, by the way, Ive done 8 f**king times so far), and whoever thought this would be a good idea needs to be brought outside of their house and strangled to death in front of their f**king children.
Edit: Ugh, So many little things that I thought could get in the way later in the game, and now they are!
ie:
The half second delay while in the aiming mode where the enemy will still fire at you (This alone has killed 3 of my characters in the one match Im playing so far).
When zooming into a character, the camera will start in a retarded place, then I get a few bullets in the ass while trying to figure out wtf is going on, or just trying to get into aiming mode
Losing running time on a character cause I ran into an idiotically placed invisible wall
Not being able to look at a map or even pause the game while in shooting mode
and, again, not being able to restart a game mid combat.
Edit2: Sorry I overreact sometime. But jesus that parts annoying. I had to give up for the day, ill try again tomorrow. Maybe do a few skirmishes later tonight to level up a bit more.
Ala Douche 01-11-2009, 12:25 AM all characters fire a set amount of rounds each time they shoot. if the enemy has started shooting when you go into aim mode, they finish their burst.
Kilzombie 01-11-2009, 08:42 AM Chapter 7 was freakin tough, I finally beat it after two days of restarting the battle, and after a long, intense battle that lasted over an hour for me, I beat the tank, though I did lose Hannes, he really did kick ass on the battlefield. I'm stuck on the second battle in chapter 8 right now, I need to level up more.
I like the story, the cheesy acting just adds to the charm for me XD
balaamsafe 01-11-2009, 08:44 AM this is high up on my lovefilm list, canoot wait to play it, the demo was sick
reminded me of advanced wars for some reason.
which imo is the best game on ds
THB xX chEEKy 01-11-2009, 09:20 AM my GOTY wa infact LBP untill I played fifa 09 which then swayed my mind untill i was again swayed and became a huge fan of killlzone2, when it comes out im sure it will be the GOTY:heart::thumbsup::heart:
T3mpus Fugit 01-11-2009, 09:23 AM MGS4 is probably the best PS3 exclusive that came out this year. Why do people put LittleBigPlanet over this masterpiece?:undecided:

I could be wrong, but I think it's because they liked LittleBigPlanet better.
Killgraft 01-11-2009, 11:43 AM MGS4 is probably the best PS3 exclusive that came out this year. Why do people put LittleBigPlanet over this masterpiece?:undecided:
A. LBP was itself a masterpiece.
B. MGS4 was, IMO, amazingly overrated. That being said, I still loved the game.
edit:

Well its good to know what chapters later on have more then one battle in each one, I was starting to wonder about that. Also, Im sorry about Hannes :( . I lost Oscar yesterday. First guy I ever lost too.
Im feeling much less frustrated then yesterday, So Im gonna see if I can blast chapter 7 into kingdom come today.
Killgraft 01-11-2009, 03:03 PM Ok well finally just got up the part where that chick arrives. Yea needless to say I just have no idea how its even possible to beat it now. I mean it wouldnt be that hard if the last radiator actually appeared but after waiting three turns I never saw it, and just passed on my turns until all my characters died, and I never saw it once. Yea I guess I have no choice but to just watch youtube videos on wtf to do.
Edit: I actually got the last radiator down with just my tank, and then I found out the battle wasn't over yet, and then the mofo one-shot Edelweiss. Yea.... this game isn't even fun anymore. It would be cool if the learning curve slowly prepared you for it, but it just flings this on you after the first 6 missions were super easy.
And I'm guessing it just gets worse after this, so f**k it, I'm done with this game, I dont need the frustration.
ThePianoMan 01-11-2009, 03:13 PM Only turn-based game I've played is FFX, and that was good. I missed the demo, I'll check this out, probably rent it
RedRainRises 01-11-2009, 03:20 PM Not seen much of this game but ever1 is saying it is really gd so might check it out
Kilzombie 01-12-2009, 01:52 AM And I'm guessing it just gets worse after this, so f**k it, I'm done with this game, I dont need the frustration.
Don't give up now! You have no idea how good I felt when I finally beat it, read a couple of walkthroughs, get your strategy sorted, and kill that tank!

Yeah, don't give up now! Sounds like you just had some bad luck when you need some good luck. I actually managed to do the tank mission first time, but only coz I got lucky - I didn't think I had enough Lancer's when I started, made worse by one dying in this battle. Fortunately, my Lancers are my most highly ranked up class, I also made sure to do all the skirmishes. Whatever you do don't leave yourself in range of the tanks rear cannon.
and, again, not being able to restart a game mid combat.
Granted, that is annoying.
Ala Douche 01-12-2009, 10:15 AM what's this? a "hardcore gamer" giving up because a level is too hard? it took me 2 tries on that level. just make sure you keep shooting down the brick walls in front of the enemy tank, that way it shoots them and the radiators pop up. when the chick gets there, use the eidelwiess as a shield when moving up the battlefield. she'll pretty much always stay close to the enemy tank, so just stay out of her line of sight.
also make sure you do a skirmish between every story battle to keep leveling up your characters.
the only annoying thing i've found so far was that pig. i was really into the game when that thing appeared and it just made me so mad that it started looking like the muppet babies. i still can't believe that was thrown in there... it was SO incredibly stupid.
Killgraft 01-12-2009, 03:08 PM Im just getting the hang of it, and I JUST figured out that when the tank shoots the radiators pop out. Im not going to give up yet, I just got amazingly frustrated, and I needed to vent. When I get home, gonna level up a bit and give it another go.
Ala Douche 01-12-2009, 04:13 PM the levels don't get easier after that... so far i've died at least twice on the 3 or 4 levels past that one that i'm on... you have to start planning 2 or 3 turns in advance... i may do some skirmishes for a while and level up my classes a bit. does anyone know if you still get exp even if you've done a skirmish already?
Killgraft 01-12-2009, 09:06 PM Yea you can do em as many times as you want. Woulda been cooler if you could just redo the chapters themselves for extra XP / Cash, and also have skirmishes with different battles then were in the story.
