View Full Version : Thinking of changing sides....

So with my 360 breaking once again :( I've decided to hell with it! If I trade in my xbox 360 + games + accessories I can pick up a rather nice 80gb PS3. My birthday is in just under 2 weeks so some money would be coming in soon! I just got my first HDTV so I would actually benefit from the graphical upgrade. Basically all signs point towards a ps3 finding it's place in my room. And all I want to know is; What is the community like on the PS3? I listen to the blu show as well as podcast Beyond on IGN so I know about most games that are out/coming soon. But I really want to know what the people are like in this community who play PS3. Are the gamer nights good? Do people keep in contact with each other and is there lots of community goodness? e.g. LittleBig Planet map construction, Running Man lines in Home?

Thankyou, Your latest convert

The best way to find out is try it so give it a shot. We are getting Gamernights off the ground again and the SG PSN users are great. Anyways you could always trade back for a 360.
Ohh Dont worry there being a shortage of Home running man lines, they never stop.

(Come on everyone get in here and give him good reasons on why he should change sides but dont seem desperate.)

I highly recommend keeping your 360 and just start saving up for a ps3. There's nothing like have the best of both worlds, imo. You might regret selling it, once something super awesome comes out like the next Halo, Mass effect2, and...

Where is RuddyPoo? He would be drooling over this.

So can you get decent trade in for a broken 360?

As much as people say the 360 trampled the PS3 this year, its managed to turn me right round. When the PS3 was coming out I'll admit I was scoffing and guffawing at it and I picked one up on nothing more than a whim about 6 months after launch and its slowly grown on me.

The hardware is SO much better. When you have a game running and the console cant be heard over a moderately low volume vs 360 which can still be heard churning away when I crank up the speakers you know right away that its a lot higher quality. It had a bad run at the start with rubbish ports but its came into its own now. PSNs quality is way higher than XBLA, my two favorite games of last year were PS3 exclusives (MGS&LBP where only Gears impressed me from the 360 exclusives and even that left me wanting). In 09 I cant think of one 360 exclusive I really want unless Rare have something up their sleeves we havent heard about (Kameo 2 plzkthnx!) but theres a fair number (5 or so) PS3 exclusives I really want - hell I'd buy a system for a Quantic Dream game alone (even if they did screw up the end of Fahrenheit).

Theres loads they need to work on, demos for everything on PSN is pretty big one and imo the 360 controller is miles better for 3D games but if I had to pick one all things being equal (ie, I could transfer all my Rockband stuff over from 360 to PS3) I would def stick with the PS3. The machine is also ass-ugly compared to the 360 though..... but then in the time Ive owned a PS3 Ive went through 3 RRODs, two on HDMI falcons. I detest the 360 hardware, its beyond a joke how one of the wealthiest companies in the world can make the single worst piece of console hardware ever. Sony get loads of stick about things like Home and such when most people seem to dismiss the RROD as old news is idiotic.

My advice would be, if you can afford it and dont mind the dualshocks, go for it.

I had a 360 and preferred it for gaming over the PS3 I have now. The online side of things is so much better on the 360. Friends list are easier to access and are alot quicker. So is organising a game with friends.

The PS3 is just a better machine for me at the moment because of the Bluray player and the fact it is alot more reliable, plus the free online helps as well.

Why the hell would you count Home as a positive point? That should be a negative if anything.

Look, the way I look at it, is that when you buy the PS3, you are buying a "ferrari". It is beautiful piece of art for your living room that is fast and exotic and full of features. The Xbox is like buying a ford, it is economical but will get you buy because it gets you from point A to point B. It doesnt look as good or as fast as the PS3 and it will break down on you on occassion and is louder. I have never played a game online with the PS3 and been offended by the F'ing mouthbreathers that tend to populate the xbox arenas. Not that the Xbox is a bad system, it is just too loud for me, I dont care for the controller, and I like the exclusivity I feel I have because I am a PS3 owner.

Too bad you cannot rent a console like you used to be able to. I used to be able to run down to my local video rental store, pay $30 and rent a PS2 with a game for a week. If that was an option you could "test drive the Ferrari" before you buy it.

Well it seems you already know about games, hardware etc... So I will just tell you what you wanted to know,

I can't really compare the ps3 users in this community with the 360 users but I will say that there is always someone online we have gamernights frequently (Once or twice a week), I personally play at least one game with someone on my friends list every other day if not every day...
It may lack some features at the moment but it can only get better from here, Other systems have peaked imo..Also, Sony has confirmed that their are still games coming out this year to be announced...

I would say go for it..

I still stand by if you have a good gaming PC, wtf are you doing with a 360? Get the damn PS3! (And Wii if you can...)

Actually they were probably thinking "I bet Mr Eibmoz would buy another PS3 when we release a slim version if we make the phat ugly enough"..... and they'd be right ¬_¬

Everyone online has decent quality headsets, which you can actually understandReally? The headsets are ok but I've always found XBLs voice codec to be a lot worse than PSNs. So much so that when I'm playing with friends we fire up Skype or TS on out PCs and never touch out 360 headsets at all. I really wish you could increase the quality when its just one on one or two chat.

Why should you get the ps3:
Great new exclusives coming out next year (God of War 3, Killzone 2, Uncharted 2, INfamous, MAG)
Less idiots online screaming down there headsets
SG gamernights are now happening regularly (Friday's) and so you'll have a good opportunity to see people from the forums in them
Free online

Why you should keep your xbox 360:
A few decent games coming out next year (the next Halo game for example)
Cheaper
More people have headsets (Yeah, it's an advantage and a disadvantage.)
You're used to it (controllers etc)

Oh and I'm doing the exact opposite to you. I'm keeping my PS3 but getting an xbox next month (took me months to save up) and my brother's getting a Wii for his birthday.

Just a minor point... a couple of you are saying that the Xbox is louder than the PS3. Well, not since NXE was released with the ability to install games. That puts the Xbox on par with the PS3 noisewise. Not a big thing, but still... :)

I have a 360 and I'm slowly but surely saving up for a PS3. Why not get the best of both worlds if you can? I'm not sure when I'll get it but it doesn't really matter, because there will be a big and pretty cheap back catalog of games for me to go through.

I would keep your 360 and save up for the ps3, When I got my ps3 I was sorta of let down. I cant say anything good about the online other than it is free, it has come some way since launch. The console itself though is worth it with the good list of exclusives this year and blu ray capabilities.

just dont go in to it thinking it will be like XBL

I have both and I love both. There are pros and cons on each side. If you are able to have the best of both worlds, then why not? I think saving for the PS3 is definitely the way to go.

im in £23,000 worth of debt (thank you student loans) which, before the economic downturn word have been worth $46,000 of your crazy american dollars. So when we finally hit out of this recession, which will probably be the day i leave university, it will be about the same :D

ahhh no...... not really

the 360 has three makers of drives, and 3 sets of different fans that it uses. The cream of the crop is the BenQ drive and the Nidec fans. Though 80 % of all 360's use the Delta fans (loud). Is it possible to get the holy grail of 360's for sound and chipsets? Yes.... but highly unlikely. Not even bring up your point of installing games.... most 360's use the delta fans, which gives the box the vacuum sound.... at all times. this is....IMO the most annoying of the sound the xbox makes.

I for one also had a hitachi drive on my first xbox , and yes that thing is annoying as well especially coupled with the delta fans, but my HDMI falcon console has the Ben Q drive so the NXE install feature is moot IMO. The fans are the issue, and the ps3......well is silent even when its fans actually turn on. ( which is usually after about 3 hours of use)

They are significantly less noisy. My 360 is on par with my friend's PS3 when it comes to installed games. We tested them side by side and it's simply an undeniable fact. The drive isn't used at all and the fans aren't working at full speed, if they even have time to start.
