Just a question:

Currently I have the 40 Gb PS3, but with the amount of games I have atm vs the amount of games I still want to play, that is no-where near enough space to put them all. I'm planning to upgrade to the 80 Gb in the next few weeks but so much info is stored on this 40 Gb:
When I upgrade, will all my trophies be able to go across to the 80 Gb because my PSN account has earned them?
Can I simply just exchange the HDD?
Can I erase my profile and everything off my old one to prevent people getting my account details and possibly, banking details?

Just BackUp your Savegames and thats it. With the new HDD you have to sync your Trophys and you got them back. They are stored in your PSN Account Information.

sweet. And one thing I forgot, because PSN marks the products you've bought before, can I simply just download them again onto the new PS3 or do I have to buy them again?

Remember to use the backup utility to make a complete back up of your current HDD, Put it on a Memory stick or something big enough to hold it, switch the HDD's over, Install back up...
Sync your trophies with your new HDD, They may not be visible til you actually put the game disc in though...

Only 80 GB if your going through the trouble of getting a new HDD get one that you wont have to switch out in a year try something with at least 120. There is a 320 HDD on amazon for about 80 bucks its a steal.

Does cloning a HD for the PS3 work?

I just upgraded my PS3s HDD, so I hope what I say will be of some help. First of all, for the love of god use the backup utility and back up to a an external HDD. At first I figured that I could just copy my stuff one by one to a memory stick, and then to my computer, but don't there are so many other things that the utility will back up that it is not worth trying to do it manually.
Second of all, make sure you have the right tools. You'll need a small star head screw driver, and make sure it has a handle so you can get a good grip. Despite the HDD swaps being almost encouraged by Sony, they put the screws in there unbelievably tight. I just used an eyeglass repair screw driver, and I managed to strip the screws so bad that I had to go to Geek Squad to get them out.
Last thing, your trophies as they appear in your trophy collection will NOT carry over to your new HDD. They will still appear on your online profile, but not on your actual system. The only way to get them to reappear is to delete and reinstall the install data (except for games with no install, their trophies will appear as soon as you put the disc in). For downloaded games, this means deleting them off your new HDD, re-downloading them, and then installing them again. One last word about the trophies. They will only appear once you put the game disc back in. This means that any games you rented and got trophies for will not appear on you HDD (although they still technically exist on the servers).
If you have any other questions, just ask.

Is there any cheap option for the external HDD for the middle man backup? Im at about 28 gigs but really don't want to buy a Intenal Hdd and a external HDD, and then end up with a 60 gig internal Hdd that was swapped....

does that make sence?

I am almost ready..... I have a eye on a seagate 2.5 sata 250gb 5400 rpm drive. ($79.00 at staples). Now sure of the speed, though it said 8mb cacheing?
Now the external HDD (middleman).... does that have to be formatted in any way? before i do the backup utility?

And i have a circa late 2007 PS3, Am i exempt of having to pre-download to another devise the 2.53 update?

thanks jacob, sending FR now, and to the op....sorry for the thread HI-Jack.

It has to be formatted to FAT32 format. Plug it into your computer and use Disk Management if you run windows, or Disk Utility in Mac to format it

I am not an expert but couldnt you just get an external one and keep your 40GB still in your PS3 and just hide your external one round the back???

Yeah, but the external would then be recognized as a storage device, and not part of the internal memory.

Yes, But You can't play, Games, Save data or Game Data off an external drive for obvious reasons... You can still use it for Music, Videos and save/game data.. But you would have to copy it to the actual hdd before you use game or save data and you wouldn't be able to play that music ingame if it wasn't on the internal drive..

Just buy a USB hard drive and copy the saves across

Just got this done last niight..... way easier then I thought it would be. Seriously Jacob was right, its almost plug and play. Whole sequence took about 2.5 hours for 29 GB of backup.

I also waited and got an extra 10 bucks off at staples which = $62.00 for a 250 GB HDD !

Now I have to run to bestbuy for a "return" Thanks jacob !
