One thing was crystal clear to me after attending CES this year and that’s that a LOT of developers and manufacturers are trying their hardest to jump on the “alternate input method” bandwagon.* Is MotionPod just another attempt at “Me too!” or does it deliver the goods?
Keep reading to find out…
I happened upon the Movea booth by complete accident where they were showing the MotionPod.* The whole SG gang was busy trying to decide what everyone was doing that I got bored waiting and wandered off to see the sights. I came across this guy flying a biplane with his hand.* I’m a huge fan of games that have you hold your arms out in front of you.* Well, I’m a huge fan for about 30-40 seconds until it starts getting annoying… and painful.
I heard the rep repeatedly explain that sensitivity could be adjusted and I’d say they should’ve probably already adjusted it because I saw the guy’s hand flying the plane and he was pretty smooth, but judging by the plane on the screen, you’d think this guy was playing the bongo drums… like his life depended on it!
I picked up one of their brochures hoping to get a better sense of what their product does and offers its users and immediately I was caught off guard by the needlessly wordy and technical descriptions for relatively simple ideas.* It seems like they’re trying to dazzle show attendees with wordy descriptions… instead of saying it does motion tracking, you get phrases like “Science based motion principles and quantification can objectively improve therapy and training by properly sequencing body movement to create maximum efficiency.” What does that even mean?!?!
As if that weren’t bad enough, the last bit of advertising mumbo-jumbo I care to repeat here says: “MotionPod is a patented solution of motion sensing technology for accurate human body orientation measurement.* This is one by using the miniaturized High-Tech motion sensing MEMS (Micro Eltro Mechanical System) containing 3 axis accelerometers and 3 axis magnetometer in a space the size of a standard wristwatch. These two parameters are fused by powerful data fusion software to give access to a higher level of information about motion, disrupting the cost/performance ratio.” What the f#$@?!?!? “Powerful data fusion software”?* That “Eltro” up above… yeah, that’s a typo, but not mine.* Going to their website it says “Electro” which makes more sense.
Now let me be clear, their product brochure could have been written and designed by someone who thought long and unnecessary words were impressive (or possibly English was their second… or third language) and it’s entirely possible the demo unit was also having troubles or their representative didn’t know what he was doing, but to someone unfamiliar with their product and reading about it for the first time…* my recommendation would be to run… run far, far away from the MotionPod from movea… go buy a Wii.* Yeah, you heard me right.* I’m gladly and sincerely urging you to go buy a Nintendo Wii before looking at this project.* It’s that bad looking.
