View Full Version : What frustrates me the most is...
DogsDieInHotCars 01-14-2009, 08:38 PM When I want to play a game I've downloaded off of the PSN (and many times any disc based game), I can pretty much count on having to wait 5-10 minutes when the game updates.
My 2 year old son loves to play Pain, and we usually go a week or two in between sessions...Every single time I log in to play there is an update that takes 5-10 minutes to download.
It really really bothers me, and quite honestly I reach for my xbox controller instead of my PS3 controller because I don't want to wait for a half hour while LBP updates.
/rant off!
Lono_Lives 01-14-2009, 08:45 PM I smell a Torgo rebuttal video coming...
Cam-Dog 01-14-2009, 08:46 PM I dont get that problem very much but i can see what your saying but be happy my updates take anywhere from 30 min to a few hours at best, Im the one that should be ranting.
Ohh and the last update for pain was needed to just make it playable because of a major bug.
Cam-Dog 01-14-2009, 08:48 PM I smell a Torgo rebuttal video coming...
Haha more like a daily video livestream to document every update in real time.
Razma 01-14-2009, 08:52 PM I got that problem last year when PS3 just kept bring update after update after update (I think it was around the time of GTA4 or MGS4). I find that it's not so bad as of late.
dandubya15 01-14-2009, 08:53 PM Quick side observation. You let your 2 year old son play a game called "Pain." A little young for that don't ya think
I agree completely. I actually bought a 360 because of stuff like this. I was thinking of getting one and my friend practically punched me in the face because I mentioned it. He hates his. He bitches about this all the time.

Should've researched it a bit better then. His fault for not liking it.
It could be worse, I'd hate to own a system made with fault parts that RROD's and acts like a 15 year old girl at the best of times.
dandubya15 01-14-2009, 09:00 PM I guess, I'm happy with my choice though!
PopTrogdor 01-14-2009, 09:25 PM you'll live
also, PS3 > 360
Razma 01-14-2009, 09:25 PM as I am happy with mine, viva la PS3

Have you played Pain? he's not too young for it. You may be, but he isn't  My son just wants to see the bowling bowl. So I set him up perfect so he can launch himself close to the bowling ball. He does that for 10 minutes then he's done.
Don't get me wrong, I LOVE my PS3. The blu-ray is DELICIOUS and I like the games I have. But when I have 30 minutes to play a game (which is all I have per week lately) I have the option to throw Warhawk in (which I grabbed for $10 bucks just before Christmas) and wait 20 minutes for the inevitable update, or I can play some Rockband and wait ZERO minutes.
I usually get the update rolling and then play my 360...by the time the PS3 is ready, game time is over.
DolmenRage 01-14-2009, 10:04 PM Well, you don't really have to update usually. When I don't want to update I just tell "no", and when it doesn't let me then I just log out of the PSN and start playing. Of course, that is a problem if you want to play online.
Razma 01-14-2009, 10:12 PM Delicious eh? I should have a nibble on the system
gliff159 01-14-2009, 11:40 PM This is the EXACT reason i buy multiplatform games on 360, also the reason that my PS3 is the family media center while a 360 sits downstaris being used for games (and media)

Why am I getting this weird feeling that I'm the only one experiencing the same issue(if you can call it an issue) on my xbox360?
From the way y'all are talking, y'all are pretending this doesn't happen on the xbox360. It's been a while since I bought a 360 game, but for example, when I bought COD4, it had already been out for several months. I popped the disc in and sure enough, I had to download an update.
You just need to play your ps3 more than once every other week and then you won't have this "every time" problem! Once the updates are done, they're out of the way. I do have to admit though, the firmware updates over the PSN blow!!! Takes forever! I ALWAYS download firmware updates off their official website and use a usb stick to install them.
Don't worry, you'll switch over to the darkside before too long
Razma 01-15-2009, 12:19 AM yes, come to the PS3, we'll treat you right
ruddypoo 01-15-2009, 05:53 AM I usually find the complaints about updates ridiculous, but there are times when it can get annoying. I did literally have to wait half an hour for Bioshock to update, and Burnout Paradise was equally bad.
But generally i think it's just blown out of proportion by impatient people.

are you really saying there the same thing? the 360 takes like what < 10 to patch and then just restarts the game while the ps3 takes a good 90 seconds to just download the patch then you have to install it that takes at least 1 min. so i have the choice of < 10sec or at best > 2 min. and dont get me started on the > 10 min system updates that seem to be monthly

Yeah, you still get updates. And If a game has been out (or you haven't played it for quite a while) then yeah you'll more than likely have an update (if you don't, is this a sign that the developers/publishers are failing to support the game?)
But it rarely takes more than 10-15 seconds for me on 360, even the NXE wasn't a long update.

You're right, you won't have it every time. Just maybe every other or every third time...
MightyMutt 01-15-2009, 07:39 AM This does annoy me at times, especially when I don't have long to play. While it does happen on the 360, it seems much more prevalent on the PS3. With my modem being dodgy (which I've now thankfully sorted) it was taking an hour or so for firmware updates.
This is why any person that calls themselves a gamer needs a 360 & a PS3. You need the 360, so you have something to play while your PS3 updates itself to today's new firmware, and you need a PS3 so you have something to play, when your 360 takes it's annual month's holiday back to the Xbox factory!
Millakilla 01-15-2009, 08:39 AM As DolmenRage said you don't have to have to update every time, you can always hit circle to cancel the update... The majority of the time it will let you then play the game without the update, But sometimes you will just be exited out of the game and not be able to play it unless you update(I believe this only happens if the main focus of the game is multiplayer, LBP, Warhawk etc) but if this does happen just sign out of PSN, Press triangle on account management then x on sign out to do this..
DogsDieInHotCars 01-15-2009, 09:13 AM But generally i think it's just blown out of proportion by impatient people.
I dare you to say this when you have a full time job, full time school, a wife and two kids. Yeah, when you literally have 1 hour of game time PER WEEK and 15-20 minutes of it are taken up by updating.....you'll be a little impatient too yo!
Why am I getting this weird feeling that I'm the only one experiencing the same issue(if you can call it an issue) on my xbox360?

Can't believe an honorable man like you would pull a fast one like this! You know for a fact that the xbox updates NEVER take more than 30 seconds. and PAIN, I repeat PAIN takes me 5-10 MINUTES every 2 weeks.
Mantooth, you've always been bitter toward anyone that hints at the fact that the xbox outperforms the ps3 in ANY area. Concede the point foo!
Droozy 01-15-2009, 09:51 AM Well this would be the #1 issue for me back 6 months ago when trying to download all the patches and updates to Metal Gear Online this was a 2 hour process. My daughter bought some songs for singstar.... another 2 hours......
But lately the updates haven't been all that bad, I was quite impressed that socom lasted only 2 mins for its download. part of it was not pinging my router, (which helped a ton for the ps3 for some odd reason) and wifi for updates is Garbage.....hardwire only
still in all:
360 updates > PS3 updates - system and games
SaintMantooth 01-15-2009, 09:56 AM Can't believe an honorable man like you would pull a fast one like this! You know for a fact that the xbox updates NEVER take more than 30 seconds. and PAIN, I repeat PAIN takes me 5-10 MINUTES every 2 weeks.

Well, I don't have pain, so I don't know, but I'm assuming there are so many updates to that game because they're constantly adding new content. Game updates never take me more than 2-3 minutes at the MAX, maybe with the exception of the first LBP update and I can guarantee it was because of server spikes due to the "first day" traffic. Maybe if you set up your home network properly you'd get better performance
Now in regards to your hateful attack towards your dearest friend Dorothy Mantooth, here's my explanation. You know I NEVER play my xbox(because it's garbage:tongue:), so whenever I do run across updates, they are NEVER <10 second updates, as someone else put it. Quarterly firmware updates always take 20-30 minutes. Gears 2 needs an update that would take 30 minutes to download () Sure I do have a slight amount of bitterness towards my Xbox, but I only defend the ps3 here because I'm in the same(or opposite, rather) boat as you. I constantly use the ps3 and I never deal with 'constant' updates lasting over 30 minutes every time I turn my machine on. I could promise you though if I turned my xbox on and threw in anyone of my games(other than gears2) I would have to do an update, and yes, it would take longer than 10 seconds. Because for ME in this respect, my ps3 outperforms my xbox. That's why. Set up port forwarding and download ps3 firmware updates on your computer and you'll be just fine!
It all just depends on what team you're playing for.
EDIT: I guess I didn't take account of the fact that I have a lot faster internet available in my area than you do. That's probably why I don't experience the same level of annoyance as you.
Lokela 01-15-2009, 10:00 AM I have to update games on both the PS3 and XBOX 360. The PS3 seems to have game updates more frequently than the XBOX 360. It doesn't bother me to much to have to wait for an update. While the PS3 is updating, I play my XBOX 360, and while my XBOX 360 is updating I play my PS3. On those rare occasions, when both the PS3 and XBOX 360 are updating, I play my Wii (and sometimes my PSP). And if I don't feel like playing any Wii games, I'll just juggle a little bit or throw some darts.
The Crazy MoFo 01-15-2009, 11:07 AM WOW, that never happens to me, the only time i get updates are when sony brings them out, sorry can help, maybe you hsould ring so:huh:ny up
rothbart 01-15-2009, 11:51 AM It's been worse in the past but I really haven't noticed it being that bad lately... admittedly, Comcast just doubled the download speeds in our area (at no additional charge), but when I have updates, they don't tend to take very long... I downloaded the SOCOM update last night and timed it and realized I was downloading at more than a megabyte per second...
We have to realize that the opposite of frequent updates is infrequent updates. While in the case of PAIN they should've REALLY tested better to keep from breaking the game, requiring another update... but in general, I'm happy games are undergoing updates/enhancements/etc.

Precisely.
Rather a company supported a game that we've paid out our hard earned cash for (and in the case of the X360 Live users to play on line as well, and you PS3 owners stop gloating at that please...), than not update them.
What does need to be addressed is the release strategy of these updates. Sounds like some of the PS3 games (from what thread starter is saying) have no real release strategy for updates.
Much rather have one large update taking a minute or so released in one fell swoop, than 10-12 small ones taking 10 seconds a time.
Exception obviously were the game is broken. Was it Two Worlds on X360 that was so crappy that it needed an update that was almost 1Gb?
Droozy 01-15-2009, 01:37 PM . Was it Two Worlds on X360 that was so crappy that it needed an update that was almost 1Gb?
It was crappy even with the gig update.....
FisherPrice92 01-15-2009, 02:31 PM ive never found it so frustrating, probably cos i've goten used to it. however i do think it is sad the devs rely on downloadable updates so heavily for fixing glitches, its a culture that has emerged since the beging of the current gen consoles and the only people who lose out are the people with no internet accsess.

yep that steaming pile was way worse then Haze.....

Yes, updates to add features are completely different than updates to finish the damned game (adding promised features that weren't ready when the accountants determined it was time to ship the game) or fix mistakes they left in... those are sloppy and irritating.
Whodini1 01-16-2009, 04:41 AM It was crappy even with the gig update.....
Never played it, just remember reading the list of fixes contained within the fix.
Took an entire page of a magazine!

This is a real PC thing which has spread like a plague to consoles now that it is assumed that everyone is online. The mentality seems to be why take the time pay for a couple more months playtesting and bug checking on a game when you can just send it out now and let the customers pay for the privilege.
In no other industry would it be acceptable to sell items that were either faulty or incomplete. You just wouldn't get away with it
Worst one I've had was on Spore for the PC - game worked ok, then they patched it and now it just crashes. Thanks for that.

The nXE?! Oh, you mean the rip-off if what the Wii had years ago.
Ventilaator 01-17-2009, 06:05 AM I totally agree, every game I own needed 30 minutes to update itself before allowing me to play.
Especially annoying when I just get a game and want to check it out without getting too deep into it, and ending up spending over an hour with the game.
I wouldn't call it frustrating though, to me it's just kind of annoying.
Vinc3nt 01-17-2009, 08:55 AM Console owners are lucky compared to PC gamers. I decided to start playing WoW again a few months back and first a 1.9gb update (which took around 8-9 hours to download) then a month later a 1.6gb update (6-7 hours) and then just before christmas a 2.6gb update which took me over a day because of computer problems
