View Full Version : So Lair is out in UK today. Is it really that bad?

I've read the only things holding this game down are the control system and the repetative nature of the game.

But i've also heard that if you like that type of game anyway, then you don't notice the repetative nature. And once you get the hang of the controls, it isn't as bad as people are making out.

So what's the opinion of people on the board? Or has everyone just avoided it and not got any first hand feedback?

Apparently, Lair has been recalled in the UK, something to do with some incorrect BBFC rating or something. Seems i've got another week or so to make up my mind.

Take a look at this (http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/message?board.id=lair&message.id=6913). It talks about the issues the reviewers have had with Lair. It is written by yours truly. It's gotten plenty of positive feedback from other users. If you aren't convinced after reading my article, then I don't think the game is for you. Enjoy!

I would if i could. Its not so easy. Blockbuster is going under and the nearest store is now ages away (not to mention the £3.75 a night).

Online renting is also a bummer for me. One company I went with took ages for the turn around and charged 14.99 for the slowness.

Any suggestions for UK renting?

I used GameFlirt.

Im gonna read your review now btw. :)

Any chance you could do a cut & paste of that review onto this forum mate? The official playstation forums are blocked here at work :-(

No problem!

Ok, After reading both IGN's and Gamespot's reviews, I really was skeptical about Lair's controls. Were they as horrible and unresponsive as those reviews say they are?

In a short answer, No. Now let me explain to you why I think so.

First off, Go back to the tutorial after you finished it. There are more things to learn and you can really get a grip on the basic flight controls in a no pressure situation. There are even some timed mini-games that you can play.

When I was playing through Lair, I used many different techniques to figure out which work the best. I did quick obnoxious jerks, I did subtle jerks, and I did some stern, but not jerky movements. The last one worked the best. Why, might you ask? Well, it's because you are controlling a dragon.

I'll start with forcing the dragon forward quickly and doing a 180 turn. Imagine that your controller is a set of reins that are attached to a dragon. How would you whip the reins in order to make her go forward quickly? A stern flick of the wrists would do the trick. The same applies when you want her to turn around quickly, a stern flick of the wrists would be appropriate. No flailing of the arms like an idiot or doing a wimpy jerk. A real animal probably wouldn't respond to that very well, and I doubt neither would a dragon. You really need to feel like you are the master of a dragon, tell her what to do. Be stern, but don't act like a madman or a wimp.

Now let's take a look at the combat mode where you have to ram into the dragon to knock it out. Same principle applies. You need to be stern in your motion to show the dragon what you want her to do. I know IGN and Gamespot knocked on how there's a delay in the movement of the controller and the dragon actually moving. But guess what? There would be a delay if you were behind the reins of a dragon. I'm guessing that the dragon trainers taught their dragons that a jerk of the reins in a horizontal direction meant that the dragons need to ram whatever is in that direction. However, in order to ram something properly, they need to brace themselves and charge in that direction, and not just move in that direction. That would be why there's a delay in the hand movement and the dragon actually doing the movement.

That's all I have for the motion controls at the moment. I believe i adequately explained my thinking as to why the controls are what they are. And I do believe that using the sixaxis for this game is better than having analogs because it gives a deeper experience.

I do have one last thing to talk about right now. For the "button mashing" one-on-one fights between the dragons, it requires skill to execute properly. I just recently discovered that you can block while fighting by hitting any of the shoulder buttons. You will definitely need to utilize this and the clawing, biting, and flame attacks. You just can't randomly press buttons, or you will not survive many of these fights. There's been a few too many times where I've been left wide open because I keep on hitting random buttons and they keep on getting interrupted by Enemy attacks.

If anyone has any other questions about the aspects of the games that the reviewers really bashed, I am happy to take my best shot at explaining this. Some time and thought went into this whole evaluation of why the motion controls are what they are. Perhaps I should send this to IGN and Gamespot and see if they even actually would take a look at what I wrote.

Well have been playing it and my final thoughts on the game are that its ok just that its boring(I feel no sense of speed and missions are just plain boring). another thing that irritates me are the controls, some moves dont register on the first attempt(this might be due to my suckiness but I get the feeling its not) and they generally feel slow(maybe this is because of im controlling a big heavy dragon but it still doesnt feel right to me even after taking the above point into consideration). Those are the only big problems with the game that I experienced. 4/10

Sadly it's a rather short game. You will most likely beat it in a rental.

I personally bought the game because I like to support the developers. I rather enjoyed the game. I never had a problem with controlling the dragon with the sixaxis.

Eh, I'd honestly go with Drakengard or Drakengard 2 > Lair. They're probably budget titles by now and give you *a lot* more then Lair.... You just gotta give up graphics for gameplay.
