Ch1cken X 02-11-2009, 03:42 AM My opinion of Halo Wars is that I liked the control scheme. I didn't play a whole lot of RTS-type games (I'm not a big PC guy), and this "dumbed down" version made it fun for me. I understand how people who've played more advanced RTS games may not like it, but it's perfect for gamers like me.
MUMRA!!! (FREAKING AWESOME)
Lono: Liono is a great idea. Way to make me anticipate the Red Show more then I already do.
DeathByWaffle 02-11-2009, 07:09 AM I haven't played the Halo Wars demo, but I am will be renting it from gamefly at the least. I am not a huge RTS player, but I did play a lot of Starcraft back in the day, still have it installed :D.
Good HDUD guys, want to see what Dave will do with Liono.
MeRcEnArY 02-11-2009, 07:47 AM I posted my thoughts in the 360 thread for halo wars. i think the way the guys kinda bashed it was a bit unfair. They have to remember that most halo fanboys havent played an RTS befor, hence the dumed down controls.
EDIT: that was not PR speak lol, i actualy think that. Haven't heard the pr for the game soo . . . yeah
Ventilaator 02-11-2009, 09:36 AM Your credibility level maxed out at 99 when you came up with the "Drink whenever a podcast call Halo Wars revolutionary" drinking game.

Yeah, we were kind of harsh on it... but I do stand by my statements. I do think that the story is worth playing, but I found the gameplay overall to be derivative and kind of boring...

I do agree that the single player is very linier and gets repetative, Kudos for being honest about being harsh on it.
We friends again? :lol::thumbsup:
MosEisley 02-11-2009, 11:46 AM I wish I could make a productive comment but I haven't played the demo because I just can't deal with the download time.
On a related note though I really wish they would make it so you could actually play a game while you have an active download going.
nr1012 02-11-2009, 12:45 PM Happy birthday Lono even though it is late.
Ploogle 02-11-2009, 05:07 PM Thanks for the shoutout, Doc! Or, was it really a shoutout? o_O
Shane86 02-11-2009, 05:42 PM Thanks for the shoutout, Doc! Or, was it really a shoutout? o_O
Could you be a bigger attention whore? I don't think it's possible
Ploogle 02-11-2009, 05:48 PM Could you be a bigger attention whore? I don't think it's possible
Huh? I happened to be on Gmail the same time as him, and he responded to a message with "recording hud". Of course I'm going to go "Sweet! Can I have a shoutout?"
demon assassins 02-11-2009, 06:05 PM Two questions one why the heck did you compare halo wars with end war. That doesn't make any sence. Like Lono if you gave halo wars voice command what would you say. Marine unit 15 attack covent second base. sorpion 5 attack covenant second base. I mean thats stupid. The reason they added supplies to it was because you had to make an econamy but end wars was just attack this defend that, capture this, it didn't have any econamy in it, So why should it have to have reasorces in it. Two what is wrong with the scrimig in it because I think its perfectly fine by me and when the game comes out there will be multi player on it and you can play with up to 8 friends . So please comment me about this because I want to know why you just hated it and sorry if I misspelled anything. Lastly I can't wait until next weeks red show

Even disregarding that time, I have to back up Shane on this one :D.
I don't play a ton of RTS games, so I don't know who dumbed down the controls for Halo Wars would feel. I guess that is why I have gamefly.
Raven 02-11-2009, 07:40 PM I agree with the points on halo wars. After picking up Endwar I need the voice command system. It allows orders to be executed so much quicker and cleaner than the old style of point and click.
n2cranes 02-11-2009, 08:04 PM i thought the halo wars demo was great. i prefer halo wars over End War. to me end war was just kind of a hassle to manage everything and i just got bored with the mult. after a while. I like the simplicity of halo wars, i like that it feels like a halo game, and you can say what you want about the control scheme. but i think its great, it does have problems but it sure beats C&C which i think is a more fair comparison. Love the show i have been a long time listener but not to active in the fourms. looking forward to the Red show next week.

well, I compared End War to Halo Wars because they're both RTS games on the console. One does it right, IMO, and the other is still archaic... There's an economy in End War, BTW, you just don't get resources unless you take control points. Which I prefer ever since Company of Heroes.
Oh and I didn't hate HW, I just can't recommend it as a buy. I say rent it.
Shane86 02-12-2009, 12:04 AM Did Doc get a new mic or something? he sounds different
Lono_Lives 02-12-2009, 12:10 AM Did Doc get a new mic or something? he sounds different
He wasn't in the studio, he was at home.
Shane86 02-12-2009, 12:16 AM He wasn't in the studio, he was at home.
Ah, ok.
Anyway I enjoyed the Halo Wars demo, won't be buying it though, I much prefer Command & Conquer.
Zvolen 02-12-2009, 01:08 PM I have to agree with Dave on this one, did I just say that? I haven't played the demo but why shouldn't certain units have different speeds, especially if its that way in real life. Its suppose to be a RTS, or a Real Time STRATEGY game. I think that adds to the strategy. This is something they have to deal with in real life, which you guys made a comparison too. I know plenty of RTS games where their units travel at different speeds and for me confirms the fact that the game is "dumbed" down.
As far as an RTS working on a console very high praises has been made for Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3. In my eyes though an RTS should be played on a PC. We will see how it does.
Oh, and Happy Belated Birthday Lono.

Zvolen, they do travel at different speeds... that's why we were kidding around with Dave... They only travel at the same speed when they're grouped together and tasked together to move to the same place...
*Facepalm*
Ventilaator 02-12-2009, 02:09 PM Zvolen, they do travel at different speeds... that's why we were kidding around with Dave... They only travel at the same speed when they're grouped together and tasked together to move to the same place...

Seriously, did he even listen to the show? You clearly said why they moved at the same speed, and you clearly said how Dave is wrong with his argument.
Lono_Lives 02-12-2009, 02:16 PM ha, ha, I suck.... but I do have the power of edit!
Ventilaator 02-12-2009, 02:30 PM ha, ha, I suck.... but I do have the power of edit!
As do I sir, as do I...

*Facepalm*
I understood your point and again think they should move at different speeds even when grouped together. As I stated it adds another aspect to the game when attacking/defending. For instance, I better send these slower units first who will be backed up by these faster units and then my aerial attack. Rather than grouping them all together and pressing...attack.
Seriously, did he even listen to the show? You clearly said why they moved at the same speed, and you clearly said how Dave is wrong with his argument.
And I CLEARLY said why I disagree.. whats so hard with that. Of course I listened to the show, stop kissin ass.
Lono_Lives 02-12-2009, 02:50 PM zvolen, if you select the units by themselves, they will move at different speeds.
Galtonia 02-12-2009, 03:00 PM Hey, who doesn't want half their army to turn up late to the party.....oh, wait that can't be right.
Ventilaator 02-12-2009, 03:02 PM One thing that always annoyed me with older RTS games was that there wasn't a formation button.
Then developers had a brainwave, and made units move together when grouped
And now you're saying you want to send units out one type at a time?
Zvolen 02-12-2009, 03:15 PM zvolen, if you select the units by themselves, they will move at different speeds.Again, I understand that but think that should stay the same when mixed units are grouped together.
One thing that always annoyed me with older RTS games was that there wasn't a formation button.
Then developers had a brainwave, and made units move together when grouped
And now you're saying you want to send units one by one again?
How said anything about sending units one by one? Maybe groups of armies by sets but again thats not mandatory still send your whole army at once if you want just know that a opponent has a better chance because your units were not STRATEGICALLY sent. Why shouldn't a jet get to its destination faster than a ground soldier?
Zvolen 02-12-2009, 03:21 PM Hey, who doesn't want half their army to turn up late to the party.....oh, wait that can't be right.
I just think an RTS should include some strategy elements in real time, imagine that. When getting attacked you have to make a decision on how close your units are and which ones to send based on your opponents units attacks and speed.
Now to further my thought, i wouldn't be against the fact of the player having the ability to control a group of units and instruct them to stay/follow with this other group of units. But that gives you the freedom of doing so and implements again strategy.
Galtonia 02-12-2009, 03:25 PM But surely thats exactly what you can do, If you want to use your faster units to make a quick blitz attack and the retreat you can do by selecting only them, but if you want them to advance as part of the vanguard you just select the whole lot together.
You have the freedom to do both, but the game assumes that if your sending the army as a unit, you want the whole unit to get there at the same time. It probably also assumes you want them to carry guns and stuff without being told.

Its just a difference of opinion I guess, obviously nothing against the game as I stated I hadn't played it but just making an overall statement.
MeRcEnArY 02-12-2009, 06:23 PM Wow way to not talk about the podcast guys lol, who cares about the movement speed?
Just get over it . . . bring the hate!
LatinLegacy 02-13-2009, 12:25 AM Ya ripped way to hard on a game that's just a demo. The controls are fine & should be simplified as they are catering to console players. Also, the controls were designed for people who may have never played an RTS game. It could still be better but it works well enough to learn quickly. Also, you can't determine the storyline by playing a demo. Play the full game first, then you are entitled to that statement. I'm lookinf forward to it so I can put the pwn on you control pad users .

Lono_Lives 02-13-2009, 08:33 AM They should rename Halo Wars to My First RTS: Halo Wars!
Lokela 02-13-2009, 09:04 AM They should rename Halo Wars to My First RTS: Halo Wars!
I concur with your statement, sir.
Oh yeah, and I enjoyed the podcast.
clyde chicken 02-13-2009, 01:58 PM Halo wars is the RTS gateway drug, Halo Wars is a beginners RTS. I have not played RTS games because I just did not want to get into the complicated control schemes on them. After just playing this demo I am total looking for other RTS games. To me this is the perfect first RTS and I will go on to play Endwar and others after playing H.W.
DDR Grievous 02-13-2009, 03:56 PM Your guy's review on Halo Wars Is Spot On! Just a rental so I can get through the single player will be enough for me. Though if they added another faction.... Flood then well maybe...
crazymidget 02-22-2009, 09:04 PM is it me or does chicken x look like rothbart
