Earlier today the Legendary Cars pack for Burnout Paradise went live on the internets. It’s*the second piece of pay-for DLC to hit Paradise City after the Party Pack (http://sarcasticgamer.com/wp/index.php/2009/02/itsnotareview-burnout-paradise-party-pack.html), which suffered from the disease known as EA-DLC-itis, where things cost more than they should and suffer as a result.

Can this new pack escape the curse? Find out over the jump…

The Legendary Cars pack is comprised of lookalikes of iconic cars featured in movies and TV shows in times past, with each taking the form of a current Burnout Paradise car with some tweaks to the looks, handling and boost type. The “P12 88 Special” passes itself off as a Back To The Future deLorean. The “Manhattan Spirit” is dressed up, sirens and all, as the Ghostbusters‘ Ecto-1. The “GT Nighthawk” is Knight Rider’s KITT in disguise, and the “Cavalry Bootlegger” is simply the General Lee, even down to the Dixie Horn.

Here’s what each of them do, as each has a distinction that makes it unique when compared to the other cars in the Burnout universe:

P12 88 Special: Floats and makes lots of annoying humming noises (with a click of L3), spits flames from its exhausts, looks like the deLorean, doesn’t do much else
Manhattan Spirit: Makes lots of noise with its sirens, advertises Criterion, looks like the Ecto-1, doesn’t do much else
GT Nighthawk: Spawns some flashing lights and a spoiler when you boost, looks like KITT, doesn’t do much else
Cavalry Bootlegger: Gets the Dixie Horn, looks like the General Lee, doesn’t do much else

Are you spotting a pattern here? The novelty factor of having cars that look like cars from films and shows off the telly is cool, but apart from that there isn’t much else for the cars to offer. They’re not mindblowing when it comes to their stats either - the Bootlegger is almost trumped by the first cars you get in the main game - and it’s in your best interests not to get over-excited, especially when you think about how much you’re paying for these cars.

Earlier this month I asked you if you would buy every last bit (http://sarcasticgamer.com/wp/index.php/2009/02/burnouts-dlc-will-you-buy-it-all.html)of Burnout Paradise’s DLC, and had a little guess at how much each piece of content would cost. Here’s a reminder:

Toy Cars could fetch as much as a fiver (7 bucks), same for the Legendary Cars; the Boost Specials could sit at around the same price, or perhaps a wee bit less.

EA, how I underestimated thee. In the UK, you’ll be charged £6.29 for the entire Legendary Cars pack (probably around 8 or 9 bucks, but it’s not up on the US stores yet) which, for four cars, is a friggin’ ripoff. You can buy three of these cars individually for £1.59 each; the “P12 88 Special” is £3.19 on its own. In the pack, it makes up 40% of the total cost. What are we paying for; the floating physics engine?

I don’t want to put down Criterion for what are, to be honest, some pretty cool cars. They’ve put the work in, submitted their efforts to EA for publishing, and are then out of the loop. It’s a huge shame because I’ve got a nagging feeling that they’ll receive a minimal cut of the profits from the DLC. If the pack had cost less, I’d have no complaints.*The problem is, EA being EA, you’re charged way more than you should be and so I can’t recommend this DLC.

The Legendary Cars pack is neat, but it’s a bit like collecting novelty snowglobes: they’re all overpriced and when you’ve collected them all you realise that money would’ve been better spent elsewhere. It’s getting only one of our two stars.
