PRESS RELEASE: DivX Technology to be Added to PLAYSTATION(R)3

Nov 13, 2007 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- DIVX | charts | news | PowerRating -- DivX, Inc. (NASDAQ:DIVX) today announced that DivX(R) video technology will be integrated into PLAYSTATION(R)3 (PS3(TM)) from Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCE). The popular computer entertainment system will be added to the ecosystem of devices that currently support DivX video playback. To date, over 100 million DivX Certified(R) products have been shipped into the market, and it is anticipated PS3 will significantly expand that number.

"We are excited to work with Sony Computer Entertainment to bring DivX to PS3," said Kevin Hell, CEO of DivX, Inc. "Our technology will expand the multimedia functionality of PS3 by enabling users to enjoy access to the broad library of content in the DivX digital media format."

Products that bear the DivX Certified logo have undergone a rigorous testing program to ensure a high-quality DivX media experience that includes reliable video playback and excellent visual quality. DivX is currently working to certify PS3 and deliver a superior digital media technology to consumers in the near future. Current PS3 end users will be able to add DivX functionality to their systems via a separate system software update at a forthcoming date. PS3 game title developers will be able to utilize DivX's decoder technology by updating the system software of PS3's Software Development Kit to version 2.00, which was released by SCE on November 2nd.

There's no usable options for Divx yet. It's announced, and coming, but it'll have to be in a future firmware update.

Well, as the PlayStation 3 has a web browser, does it have a torrent client too? Otherwise, this would be pointless, because you'd have to download the films on your computer, so why not watch them on it? Or maybe they're planning to release some DivX movies in the PSN (har, har, har)?

Becuase you can share your PCs movies over your network to your PS3. PC is probably in some dank corner, PS3 is probably in a comfy living room. Also, you can run bit torrent on PS3.

Not to mention the fact you could probably burn your DiVX collection to disc and play on the PS3, or better yet, have a whopping great 500gig external HD with all the vids on hooked up via USB.

Others have already said it, but some people actually have file servers in their house. I'm one of those people. I'd much rather sit in my leather recliner and not hear my PS3 running than sit (my byself) at my computer desk in front of my noisy computer and smaller monitor to watch movies.

If they give us flat-out DivX support as a playback codec, I'll be both amazed and impressed. I'm still waiting for the "gotcha". And I'd like clarification on Xvid as well.

I'm looking for a nice replacement for Xbox Media Center (XBMC, not that crap Microsoft is selling, Media Center Extender). I figured it would be from some Linux installation, but if they want to give us DivX playback with DLNA media streaming support, sign me up!

Man, I would kill for HD XBMC!

I still think we'll see a Linux multimedia suite run on PS3 hardware that'll be impressive (even to those that've run XBMC). They're working on porting XBMC itself to *nix.

The main problem is, Sixaxis still dosnt work under Linux, does it? Without that its a bit dead in the water. It would also be nice if Linux was more integrated into the XMB since its helluva clunky switching between the two, although I suppose thats so they can lock out everything that needs to be locked out to prevent piracy.

I've not really been keeping up on the Linux stuff for a while now though, so for all I know they've got sixaxis working.

I'd be happy if either the PS3 or the 360 can give native DivX support. The issues Transcode360 has with Vista is driving me up the wall. I have to get Transcode to buffer something for 30 minutes before i'm ready to watch it. This would be the answer to my prayers, i'd keep my 360 to play TS files (well now i've got Vista they have to be converted to MS-DVR first) and use the PS3 for everything else.
