If you listen to the SG Pink Podcast you probably heard us talk about The Maw a time or two. We even had a contest asking the community to cry “MAW” and win a free copy of Afro Samurai for the Xbox 360. If you’re lame and don’t listen to our podcast, hit the jump and find out why I think this is the best Xbox Live Arcade title I have seen so far. If you don’t hit the jump and read the rest I’ll send my own little purple blobby alien to eat you.
The Maw is an Xbox Live Arcade title created by Twisted Pixel and is available for 800 MS points. Frank (who looks a bit like Olimar from Pikmin) and Maw are the only survivors from a Galactic Bounty Hunter ship that had captured them and then crashed. The crashing of the ship will make your Xbox 360 controller vibrate a LOT, so sit back and enjoy.
Maw looks like a cute little purple alien puppy. Left to wander alone he really doesn’t pose much of a threat, even though the cage Frank got him out of was labeled “THE DEADLIEST ORGANISM IN THE UNIVERSE”.

This cute little guy is supposed to be deadly? Come on.
Frank slaps a plasma leash on Maw and together they head for a communications tower far away. Why they head to this communications tower, I’m still not sure.
So how does this little purple blob with his adorable green tongue hanging out become so “Deadly”? He eats everything in sight, and has the ability to absorb the characteristics of anything he consumes. So, when Maw eats a silly looking bird with lots of eyes, he turns into a silly blue and green creature with lots of eyes. He eats a beetle, and he turns into a gigantic beetle-like ramming machine that is frustratingly uncontrollable. Seriously, the beetle level was one of my least favorites. You try and aim Maw in the wall or beetle that you want him to bash into and he does an about face and drags you off in the other direction. I think some work could have been done on the controls on that level. Or maybe there was another button I forgot to push, which entirely plausible.
Visually, The Maw is a good looking game, and I would even go as far as to say that it is the best looking Xbox Live Arcade game I have ever had the pleasure of playing. The controls in the game are extremely simple, making this a good game for any age level. Some of the levels are rather puzzle-esque and require some thought to figure out, but if I can figure them out then anyone can.
As you play through the story line you will find yourself getting attached to this ever growing little blob. The further along in the game you get the bigger Maw gets. Eventually, he gets so big that it gets tough at times to see the game you’re playing around his enormous body. Maw gets so big at the end that he becomes planet-sized, and you have to play a scene that is reminiscent of one of the Lego Star Wars TIE Fighter levels.
The 200 achievement points are very easy to get and can all, with the exception of one, be attained by simply playing through the game. The last achievement that I have to get on this is “Six Meals A Day” which requires you to play the game during Maw’s six meal times: Breakfast, Brunch, Lunch, Dunch, Dinner, and Midnight Feast. I still haven’t figured out what times these are, but I feel like googling it is cheating so I’ll keep playing until that last sweet achievement pops up. If the original levels aren’t enough Maw for you, fear not! A new downloadable level was released on February 18th for 100 MS points. As a bonus you get an extra 15 achievement points for finishing this level. I did download this extra content today to try it out.
I definitely recommend this game, and guarantee that you will love it. Oh and don’t’ even try to call me out for not playing a game I did an It’sNotAReview on. Cause this gamer did her homework. Then again this game should only take you a couple hours to play through so it’s not like I put forth THAT much effort. Two Sarcastic Stars for The Maw!
