I haven’t had the chance to update my blog very much lately. The opportunity arises now partly as I haven’t been gaming as much, mainly due to an over abundance of over exuberant fireballs and dragon-punches wearing an actual hole in my thumb! The other reason is that I have been inspired by the events unfolding between Ron Workman/Jim Sterling and Destructoid and have something to say about the matter - Didn’t want it to go left unsaid in case Mr. Workman calls me out for being a sloppy journalist!
Before I go any further let me point out that while I’m closely associated with this site and while both Workman & Sterling have been good friends to SG, I personally have no connection to either of them and don’t feel that I owe either of them anything. Which is good, because they are both wrong.
Many gamers are taking issue with Sterling about his Halo Wars review, because he didn’t play through the whole game before reviewing it. This is slightly narrow minded, as I believe that a good game journalist should be able to get the majority of information they need to review a game without playing the game in it’s entirety. If not, then surely you have to take as much issue with anyone that bases a review off of pre-view code, or debugged games (i.e. a large number, if not the majority of the games reviewed by websites and magazines) It also means that you should stop paying any attention to previews done by those outlets because all of those are based on less game than the amount Jim Sterling played.
The whole incident makes me very wary of entering the world of game journalism. I’m aware that Jim Sterling has recently moved to America, I presume to be closer to his work. I’m not saying that Jim will be fired for this but stranger things have happened. With the economy as it is, and with a plethora of unemployed and talented 1up’pers vying for jobs at the moment, finding another job would not be the easiest thing for him. It may serve Ron Workman well to remember that this is this mans livelihood we are talking about here not just a review score. I’ve seen him say it is not a personal attack on Jim Sterling but when you call someone out by name, that gets personal, whether you like it or not. I also take some issue with him abusing his access to Jim’s personal information.
It may equally serve Jim Sterling well to remember he has a responsibility to his audience. He either should not review the game or have invested more time in to doing his research. However, I do not hold with the notion that he had to play the game all the way through. I only played the tutorial (the most condescending demo I’ve played in my life - “Do you know what the X button is? Can you press it three times? You can count to three can’t you?”) That was enough for me to be happy to never play the game again and you know what? I happily give that game a 7/10. Perhaps Jim thought that such a phoned-in level of game didn’t deserve any more of his time, the problem was that his readers did.
