Omega 03-02-2009, 04:31 AM Fantastic "take us out".
This is Three Dog, ooooooooooow!
A Rabid Moose 03-02-2009, 06:33 AM Bwahahahahahahahaaaaaaaaaaaaaa....burn.
MosEisley 03-02-2009, 07:28 AM Wow what a hostile episode.
There are so many offensive gamertag's out there on Live. There's nothing wrong with saying your sexual orientation as long as it's done in an appropriate and inoffensive way.
Ready here we go looking in my recent players list somebody's GT "n1PP1E2" Now... Microsoft is fine with that but somebody having something as simple as mentioning they're a lesbian or a gay male is CODE RED!
BTW next week can we have Dave take us out as an informative and active podcaster?
kim andre 03-02-2009, 08:23 AM ah my heart stooped there for a second. a fallout 3 reference in a dave-take us out that was actually good. that just made my day :)
Ventilaator 03-02-2009, 08:56 AM No offense Doc, but I'm with Lono on this one.
You can't compare soup with videogames because a crappy soup is the same kind of crappy no matter how long you eat it.
But could you imagine reviewing Braid after playing the first 2 levels, and not getting to the part when it all turns out to be about world war 2?
Reviewing Mgs4 after only playing the first Act of and not seeing Rex vs Ray, the Microwave Hallway and the final battle?
Or heck, giving a praising review to Loco Roco after only playing the first couple of levels, and not realizing that the game gets amazingly and annoyingly repetitive the more you play it, because all the levels play the same, only looking a little different.
I can understand applying the soup analogy to games like Tetris, but it really doesn't work with most modern games.
You don't need to do every single thing to review a game (I bet no reviewer shot every single pigeon before reviewing GTAIV) but at least finish the damn game.
No offense taken. I don't have an agenda to get people to stop writing deep reviews or anything. Just to get a conversation going about it, maybe get people to think a bit more about how much stock they put where. To be honest about how they really make their buying decisions.
I think that's happened. So I'm good.
chris24680 03-02-2009, 12:23 PM I think in a review you should play as long as you would in real life. It's a safe bet that if a game is crap at the start it will be crap at the end as well. If you think a game is good you should play the whole thing though. Then again what counts as the whole thing, the main storyline, the side missions or 100% completion.
Ploogle 03-02-2009, 12:26 PM I agree with Doc. I'm not entirely sure what's wrong with the soup analogy, I think it's pretty good.
Just sent my Scare Dave contest submission in. Hope Dave *likes* it! Now to finish my entry for the Best of Three Worlds contest and get started on my SG Store ad submission. You guys seem to love contests all of a sudden, don't you?
Cujoe 03-02-2009, 12:42 PM At one point this episode made me feel like a child walking in on his parents arguing in the kitchen. But after mommy and daddy made up Dave's take us out cheered me up. Thanks Dave.
sayaintjimmy 03-02-2009, 12:44 PM Wow what a hostile episode.

oohhhhhhh burn sick burn
Lono_Lives 03-02-2009, 12:51 PM Here's what's wrong with the soup analogy, games are often uneven experiences. Oftentimes, games start out really slow (GTAIV) or start off fast and then fade away. Two examples: Assassin's Creed - starts off really fresh, but after a couple of hours, it gets really repetitive and boring.
Metal Gear Solid 4 - While the game is great, the first act is the best part of that game.
So, If someone only played a few hours of Assassin's creed, they would love it, but grow to dislike it (at least I did.).
Same thing with Metal Gear Solid 4, but that was an overall better game.
The soup analogy assumes that you'll have an even experience throughout, which is just flat out false.
Oh and if you get paid to review games, play the whole game. So what if you don't make your magic "exclusive" deadline. Play the damn game.
Hungry Luma 03-02-2009, 12:51 PM I'm with Doc, and all in all a great episode. A heated argument, great jokes from the whole crew and an awesome Dave Take Us Out. Doesn't get much better.
TylDurden 03-02-2009, 01:30 PM I agree that one must finish a game to be able to review it properly, many a times the ending has made or broken a game for me, fable 2 was awesome until the end, what was all that leveling for. or MGS3 concept was very hard to grasp but story was involving enough I learned to crawl more than I wanted to and now its my favorite MGS. Also nobody should be teased or judged for being gay, truth is though they are gonna get flamed on live and theirs not much XBOX can do about that but banning them for it is wrong, yes my advise is to not mention your sexual orientation, its unfortunate but true. But don't ban them for it.
Ventilaator 03-02-2009, 01:44 PM Post
Your AC example reminded me of a couple of things.
I saw A Scanner Darkly and found it crappy. It tried to be amazing but ended up talking too much and not having a great story.
Then I read the plot description on Wikipedia, and realized that I hadn't understood a bit of it clearly. Long story short, I am now looking for the DVD, because the movie seems now, when I understand it fully, totally amazing.
Another example is the Sweeney Todd movie. While watching it, I thought it's going to end up to be a big old 5/10. Not bad, just average. When I got to the ending, it ended up to be a solid 2/2. The ending made me think about the whole thing in a much better way.
Who knows, maybe if you finish Halo Wars the game says "Yeah, this was on the NOOB setting, because this game is for easing people into RTS games. If you'd like, there's also this HARDCORE setting that makes the game harder and more deep"
So that's why, in my opinion, you should give time to stuff that you are going to judge. Movies, games and books aren't as evenly crappy as a bowl of soup.

Yes, sometimes good games turn bad, but usually bad games stay bad. After the second half of Iron Man, shell shock 2, or History Channel Civil War: secret missions those games where not going to become good. I think as long as the person has played long enough to come to there decision that its a bad game, they shouldn't have to suffer through the rest of it. Also he wasn't exactly slacking off. His job technically is to write reviews and he wrote the review.
VinDali 03-02-2009, 02:19 PM Can I get my hedge trimmers back too Lono?
Lono_Lives 03-02-2009, 02:40 PM Yes, sometimes good games turn bad, but usually bad games stay bad. So, you're comparing those games to Halo Wars? Because that's Doc's justification, that Sterling, who game HW a 7, couldn't stomach the game and was right in not finishing it. That's Doc's argument in support of Sterling and the reason for his soup analogy...
heyfling 03-02-2009, 03:06 PM Great episode guys. That was the best Dave take us out ever.
@Lono
have you played Shaun White Snowboarding yet, if so how were the controls.
Suneru 03-02-2009, 03:17 PM I think reviewers should always disclose two things.
First, do they like the style of the game that is being reviewed.
When I read or listen to a review I want to know if the reviewer has a similar opinion to my own. I think Jim Sterling doesn't like RTS games, and I know he hates the Halo universe. I've read and listened to Jim Sterling for a while and I know my opinion of games are similar, so I usually agree with his reviews. However first time listeners (readers) of reviews should be informed of the reviewers biases.
Second, did they finish the game.
I usually will give up on a game if it doesn't grip me right away. So if the game doesn't keep the reviewer engaged long enough to finish it, the game will probably not keep me engaged.
Doc: I like soup. I smiled at your soup picture, but I only read the first part of your article before I got bored. You get one star.
See how easy this is.
Lono_Lives 03-02-2009, 03:37 PM Great episode guys. That was the best Dave take us out ever.
@Lono
have you played Shaun White Snowboarding yet, if so how were the controls.
its fun, the controls are very customizable. Its the only wii game that I actually want to play...
Ploogle 03-02-2009, 04:16 PM Here's what's wrong with the soup analogy, games are often uneven experiences. Oftentimes, games start out really slow (GTAIV) or start off fast and then fade away. Two examples: Assassin's Creed - starts off really fresh, but after a couple of hours, it gets really repetitive and boring. Oh really? So, all soups are of the same consistency throughout the eating experience? I don't think so. Allow me to present various soups:
Metal Gear Solid 4 - While the game is great, the first act is the best part of that game.
Sweet soups. First part is the best, then it's still good...but it's too sweet. No one likes too much sweet, especially in a soup. Split pea soup, also. Starts out thick, but wears thin towards the end...which seems to take forever. It's a filling soup.
So, If someone only played a few hours of Assassin's creed, they would love it, but grow to dislike it (at least I did.).
Same thing with Metal Gear Solid 4, but that was an overall better game.
French Onion Soup. Great soup, but if you eat it too much and too often, it gets REALLY old.
The soup analogy assumes that you'll have an even experience throughout, which is just flat out false.
Soups have far from an "even" experience. Take plain chicken soup for example, straight from a Campbell's can: It starts out awesome; nice and hot, with plenty of noodles and chicken. Then what happens? It starts to cool off. The noodles run out. The chicken gets old, and you're left with the grainy remnants at the bottom of the bowl.
Split pea soup: Starts to thin out after a while, making it not nearly as good.
Oh and if you get paid to review games, play the whole game. So what if you don't make your magic "exclusive" deadline. Play the damn game. Do food critics finish the WHOLE meal before declaring the food is good or not? Find me someone who does. I find that the reviewers who finish the crappy game are the ones that are like guests over for a meal: You aren't going to say outright that it's crap, and you'll finish it to not offend the hosts. In your own home, however, eating what you want and telling your friends about it? Who goes out and buys something, finds that it tastes HORRIBLE, but doesn't think they should really tell people about how bad it is--STAY AWAY--without finishing the atrocity of a meal they've created?
Just had an awesome soup for lunch, btw. Also, shouldn't this episode have been called "Soups up!"? You spent far more time talking about video game reviews than the Wii Fit...
ferherence 03-02-2009, 04:57 PM where do I submit a contest picture? I don't have time to re-listen to the episode, but need to know.

Why thank you good sir.
UndeadDoG 03-02-2009, 06:36 PM Great "Dave Take Us Out"!! I'm really starting to wish this podcast was longer. Once you guys start cat fighting, it's like half of a show.
demon assassins 03-02-2009, 06:38 PM I think it was a pretty good show other then for the fact you guys spent mybe 10 minutes just talk about how soup is a bad comparison or your saying something different the what you wrote. Its good you like to complain about stuff like that but if your going to do that. Make a complaints forum, thread, or podcast but don't ficken just talk about review soup!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
choco 03-02-2009, 06:59 PM ah my heart stooped there for a second. a fallout 3 reference in a dave-take us out that was actually good. that just made my day :)
ya that was really good! and it was a ok show I about fell asleep during the yell fest haha.
Ch1cken X 03-02-2009, 07:03 PM The show is free, so I can't justify any reason to complain. I will defend the "He said, He said" argument. I love the fact that both Doc and Lono were so passionate about their point of view. It pertained to games, and what's going on in the gaming realm. I listend to 7-8 different podcasts every week, some on gaming, some not. I always have something to listen to, but find that I look the forward to the SG ones the most. Fact is, it was a good show.
And for the record, I loved that Dave carried the "beeping of Lono" over from the HDUD. That made me laugh out loud.
Shaha44 03-02-2009, 07:12 PM I really loved this episode. Not only does Dave do an excellent take us out, but the "discussion" between Doc and Lono was absolutely brilliant. You both made very valid points on review expectations. Part of me sides with Doc and the other half sides with Lono's ideas. Also, the iTunes review section effing was hilarious!
I would actually love to hear the review discussion carried into the HDUD, it was very thought provoking. It is very apparent who the lawyer is during that discussion. Doc starts getting very frustrated while Lono kept his cool... Doc, please do not take any offense to that, I would have also got frustrated.
Anyhow, great show gents; keep it up!
demon assassins 03-02-2009, 07:50 PM erg I can't get this to delet owell
UndeadDoG 03-02-2009, 07:56 PM So, you're comparing those games to Halo Wars? Because that's Doc's justification, that Sterling, who game HW a 7, couldn't stomach the game and was right in not finishing it. That's Doc's argument in support of Sterling and the reason for his soup analogy...
It strikes me as odd that a game you couldn't finish would get a 7. It would make sense not to finish your bowl of nasty soup, but it gets wierd when you tell the waitress the soup was sort of okay.
8bitBass 03-02-2009, 09:00 PM Good show guys, I actually enjoy the passion and arguments.
Now is a reviewer paid to play the game all the way or to be a good writer?
Oh and Ventilaator, a plot twist is usually not going to sell a crappy game to me (not that MGS4 and Braid are crappy.) And thanks for ruining Braid for me by posting the spoiler, now I have no reason to play through that game.
toyskins 03-02-2009, 10:50 PM I think the soup analogy was actually really good.
nr1012 03-02-2009, 11:19 PM Good show and keep it up. By the way, how is Lono playing Shaun White Snowboarding for the Wii when Killzone 2 just came out? I am just asking Lono. Take no offense to me.
Ventilaator 03-03-2009, 12:47 AM And thanks for ruining Braid for me by posting the spoiler, now I have no reason to play through that game.
I wouldn't normally post spoilers but we have established here in the forums that if a game is a month or two old then it's totally okay.
It's stupid, I know.
And a crappy game can be totally made better by an amazing plot twist. Imagine that the plot twist is, that the entire game was supposed to be crappy, as a scientific experiment to see how crappy can a game be, and still sell well. After finishing it they give you a check you can print out for a million dollars, as a thanks for taking part in their cruel, cruel experiment.
Now, if a game like that actually existed. And you would see a review with "I only played the first 2 levels", you would tell him to finish the damn game.
Long shot, I know.
8bitBass 03-03-2009, 12:54 AM I wouldn't normally post spoilers but we have established here in the forums that if a game is a month or two old then it's totally okay.
It's stupid, I know.
Who made that decision!??
Ventilaator 03-03-2009, 12:57 AM Who made that decision!??
Well, Lono did. With some help from PMPB (http://sarcasticgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=15979&highlight=resistance+patch)

Ok. I see. So Lono says it is ok to post spoilers because he doesn't like Resistance 2 and gets a lot of flak about it from the community and then you berate everyone for getting upset about spoilers!?? nice one.
Ventilaator 03-03-2009, 01:20 AM Ok. I see. So Lono says it is ok to post spoilers because he doesn't like Resistance 2 and gets a lot of flak about it from the community and then you berate everyone for getting upset about spoilers!?? nice one.
Like I said, I wouldn't normally do it. But apparently it's totally okay. Maybe I didn't like Braid, and now believe I just saved you money? I mean, if I didn't like it, there's apparently no way anyone in the world could enjoy the game. :undecided:
8bitBass 03-03-2009, 01:30 AM I mean, if I didn't like it, there's apparently no way anyone in the world could enjoy the game. :undecided:
So you are saying Braid is like a soup. If you don't like the first spoonful, there is no way you will like the whole soup/game?
Ventilaator 03-03-2009, 01:37 AM So you are saying Braid is like a soup. If you don't like the first spoonful, there is no way you will like the whole soup/game?
Now, I'm saying Lono's logic was broken.
Lono_Lives 03-03-2009, 02:26 AM Now, I'm saying Lono's logic was broken.
Huh? Explain.
Ventilaator 03-03-2009, 02:30 AM Huh? Explain.
I am talking about when you said a while ago "I didn't like Resistance 2, so here's a spoiler"
How does that make sense?
Read the above posts to understand why I brought it up again.
Great show guys. That was quite a heated debate between Doc and Lono. I enjoyed it immensely. You guys should fight more often. ;)
MeRcEnArY 03-03-2009, 06:04 AM Wow way to make me tune out for a while, the argument was mad, but did you realy have to keep it? Could have just played NBA2K9 to settle it. Not that i wanted Doc to win . . .
A Rabid Moose 03-03-2009, 06:45 AM I'm with Lono on this one. If you're a website like this one, no, you don't have to play the entire game , you just need need to be upfront with that fact. If you're paid to review games, then yes, you do have to play the entire game. I mean, your job is pretty easy as it is, you could at least have some challenge in your life.
LEGEND 03-03-2009, 02:04 PM I don't usually comment on podcasts but Doc and Lono's argument over review scores was brilliant and thoroughly enjoyable.
Maybe more of that kind of stuff in the future?
Olimar 03-03-2009, 02:32 PM Was the braid spoiler reaaaaally needed? >_>
You could have at least used spoiler captions.
I was just getting into that game :(
Killgraft 03-03-2009, 04:45 PM Was the braid spoiler reaaaaally needed? >_>
You could have at least used spoiler captions.
I was just getting into that game :(
I was just getting in Resistance 2 when it got spoiled for me. By an admin, no less. It's okay though, the person who posted the spoiler didn't like it, obviously you wont either.
IceKatana X 03-03-2009, 05:50 PM I've got to agree with Lono. The game's quality can be different as the game progresses. For some games the analogy might work but for certain genres (MMOs and RPGs for example) the analogy doesn't work.
I like the way the "Dave Take Us Out"s are going.
Lono_Lives 03-03-2009, 07:12 PM I am talking about when you said a while ago "I didn't like Resistance 2, so here's a spoiler"
How does that make sense?
Read the above posts to understand why I brought it up again. I saved people from having to play that wretched game. Besides, how could I have spoiled it, when PMPB spoiled it weeks earlier?
Lono_Lives 03-03-2009, 07:15 PM I don't usually comment on podcasts but Doc and Lono's argument over review scores was brilliant and thoroughly enjoyable.
Maybe more of that kind of stuff in the future?
Thanks. I like digging into issues too.
strika234 03-03-2009, 07:29 PM whaaaaaat?
damn... now I'm not sure whether to finish it...:sad::sad:
Shane86 03-03-2009, 08:02 PM On the gamercast network promo, does Dave know what "flicking your bean" means? :D
NuclearNinja 03-03-2009, 10:21 PM That was pretty extreme.
Ventilaator 03-04-2009, 02:27 AM Don't worry 8bit and Olimar.
I have never played Braid, I don't even have a 360. I got the ending spoiled by a internet site as well.
And Lono, if PMPB raped babies weeks earlier, does it mean that you should as well?:lol:
8bitBass 03-04-2009, 02:46 AM Don't worry 8bit and Olimar.
I have never played Braid, I don't even have a 360. I got the ending spoiled by a internet site as well.
And Lono, if PMPB raped babies weeks earlier, does it mean that you should as well?:lol:
It doesn't matter if you played Braid or ever would, and I don't care that you got the spoiler off of a website. What I care about is that you ruined a game for me and some other people here.
Ventilaator 03-04-2009, 02:50 AM It doesn't matter if you played Braid or ever would, and I don't care where you got the spoiler from. What I care about is that you ruined a game for me and some other people here.
I know, it's stupid. But why doesn't anyone care about the fact that the ending of Resistance 2 was spoiled twice on the front page of this site? It's so easy to pick on the little guy.:lol:
I was planning to get Braid when it gets released on the PC by the way.
Englishman 03-04-2009, 04:45 AM I've got to admit that I've changed my mind on the soup thing. At first, I was with Doc, in that why finish something that you aren't enjoying and is obviously shite. I've now realised that it would lead to inaccurate reviews for games that are growers. I bought Prince of Persia based on good review scores, but I'm half-way through it and am bored to death. A good half-way house would be like one of you said in the show: if you don't finish a game for the review, say so and qualify your scores and opinions based on that.
Overall, I thought that this weeks podcast was below par. Nothing about video games got mentioned until half-way through. Up until then, it was bickering and snipy. Lono, it's good for Dave that you aren't in the same studio, because if it was me trying to talk and getting the 'beep' every two seconds, I would have leaned over the table and knocked him out. Last week, the 'beep' was funny for the first third of how long it went on for. This week, Dave was just being a tool.
Let's hope that next weeks show is more like it used to be - three friends yakking about gaming and obviously enjoying each others (and our) company.

It is a good thing for their safety that they don't podcast with you:lol:
Olimar 03-04-2009, 02:13 PM A game getting spoiled for you is no excuse to ruin for other people. At the VERY LEAST you could have used the spoiler tags.

I know spreading spoilers like this is stupid.
I should have used spoiler tags, but so should PMPB and Lono. And which is more stupid, me inserting the spoiler as a sign of protest or Lono inserting the spoiler just because he didn't like the game?
It seems Killgraft understands where I'm coming from.
bluemanrule 03-04-2009, 05:21 PM I think a reviewer has the right to play a game as long/short as he/she feels. Just qualify that in your review. With that being said, all games are not the same from beginning to end. Some grow on you while others are great/terrible from the beginning. Assassins Creed started fast with all abilities unlocked, then bogged the player down limited abilities. As you progressed through the game and powered up, it became more fun.
All-in-all, just read reviews from multiple sources to get a general idea of the prevalent aspects of a game and then....decide for yourself. That's what it all boils down to. Besides, isn't that what rental services are for?

Ok so Lono and PMPB giving spoilers is stupid, but why is that a reason for you to do it. Your excuse is that someone else did it to you? Two wrongs dont make a right
godslabrat 03-05-2009, 12:06 AM Great job on the podcast, gang, I look forward to a new one each week.
One thing, though... Could you set up a thumbnail image for the podcast so it's easier to pick out of a list? It's pretty easy... just add an <IMAGE> tag to your RSS file.
One very humble suggestion to you guys. Keep up the good work!

ould you set up a thumbnail image for the podcast so it's easier to pick out of a list? It's pretty easy... just add an <IMAGE> tag to your RSS file.
This has been brought up before. I forget exactly what the issue is, but I know that it has been looked into.

Ploogle 03-06-2009, 06:18 PM Question about the "Scare Dave" contest: by "one more week", do you mean that the winner has been determined (as you recorded last night) and that we'll find out on Monday, or that we actually have until Monday to enter?
I sent mine in, so I'm just wanting to know if we find out in episode 77 or 78.
Torreyjs 03-06-2009, 10:43 PM This who XBOX LIVE banning incident has really shown to me what people who truly dont read anything past the title of an N4G can do when they turn on their flaming Fanboy lightsabers of eternal green fiery eye wrath.
Lets review what can be easily found within less than 10 seconds after typing the words in and clicking on a Google generated search link.
The person "Teresa"(sp?) had in their profile description that they were gay. This person was harassed about it and reported for sexual content in a profile description. This person was suspended and told to change it, after "Teresa's refusal, banned.
Granted this doesnt happen often but what happened here is a two-way street kids. If I put into my XBOX live account that I love women and im as straight as an arrow and enough idiots report me I will be suspended until I change it. If I refuse then I too will be banned.
And to finish off my rare rant since I rarely give a shit about this, Playstation HOME has similar policies. Try it and see.

True. Spoilers are contagious. Sigh.

Actually, if you had read even further into it, we already reported that this was probably fake. So chill dude.
PrimevilKneivel 03-07-2009, 12:16 PM I agree that when it's your job to review a game you should finish it before reviewing it. I can, however, see that there might be a few occasions where it's not worth that investment of time. An exception that proves the rule if you will. in those limited cases the fact would have to be upfront and the game would get a complete fail. 7 out of ten does not accurately describe something so horrible it's just not worth doing your job.
As for the gay gaming portion of the show I think you guys dropped the ball. Did you read anything other than the consumerist article? I blogged about this topic (http://skeptor.wordpress.com/2009/03/03/is-microsoft-taking-the-gay-out-of-gaming/) so I've researched it a bit and came to a very different conclusion. MS recognizes that their efforts to stop bad expression is limiting valid expression and they are trying to deal with this. But seriously Lono, what happened to the burden of proof? One letter posted on a website that no one has verified is hardly proof of anything.

Dude, you are so full of crap. First off, you "blogged" about it, five days after we recorded the show and two days AFTER our show came out! So, come on dude, a lot of information came out between the time we recorded and when the show came out. FYI, we record on Thursdays and the show came out on Monday.
The info was fresh, at least to us when we recorded it. Once we got more info, we reported on it. Read my post ABOVE your post... and get off your high horse.
Torreyjs 03-08-2009, 05:56 PM Lono is the devil, hes obviously bashing the 360 and touting a ps3
pft fanboys these days weilding there lightsabers of influence to destroy a market and sway kids to make their parents not buy the evil consoles
