Hi everyone, we’re adding some great new features with the next PS3 firmware update (v2.70) that will continue to enhance your connected experience on the PS3. The 2.70 update brings a new Text Chat feature that enables you to communicate online with your PlayStation Network friends. Now, you’ll be able to chat with up to 15 online friends using the Wireless Keypad, on-screen keyboard, or other compatible keyboard peripherals. Not only can you chat with your friends instantly, but you can also access Text Chat while playing PS3 games and even participate in up to three chat rooms at once.

In addition to Text Chat, we’ve added a few more enhancements:

Friends list on the XMB (XrossMediaBar)

* Sort your friends via their online status
* Attach larger files to the messages you send to your friends (file size will increase from 1MB to 3MB)

Video delivery service on PlayStation Store

* Video files you’ve purchased from the PlayStation Store can be backed up to an external storage device and then restored to PS3’s internal hard drive for playback – so you can clear up space on your hard drive and then restore the video anytime in the future
* Videos you’ve purchased for PSP (PlayStation Portable) system can now be transferred to PS3 for playback

I finished downloading it! The chat room is pretty nice.
The only problem I have with the chat room is that it censors the prefix "pik" in my name. :(

Trophies load up significantly faster

Seems pertty rad so far. To ages to download though ¬_¬

didnt take too long and i have a crap interweb connection

I'm a bit concerned. I started to download it but it didn't seen to reach 100% before starting installation and I swear the installation didn't reach 100% too before finishing.

My PS3 works fine after that and the text chat function has now appeared but I'm wondering if I should be concerned about the above. :(

when oh when will we get voice messages they only need to be 30sec, come on! It is pathetic I am even excited for a text based chat on this "next gen" system.

I am happy for this, but was looking for something with a little more thought behind it and I want more!

When I heard this news I thought it was cross game voice chat. Nope. It just another feature from the past that they are trying to make relevant just so they can sell more of their key pad add on which is over priced very cumbersome to use in the first place. Wake me up when the release a new shiny firmware update that isn't designed to fix another flaw in the system. I'm tired of them showcasing all the rediculous firmware releases that they have when only one of them (2.40) was worth talking about.:angry:

This is useless, I have no idea why anyone is excited about this. Its like getting excited when Firefox does security updates, and making a thread about it. But at least Security updates are useful.

Hopefully the Firmware 3.0 implements common sence to Sony.

They can't release all the features that all users want. They have to make this constant firmware updates last another 7 years.

I will definitely agree with that. No more of the usual 2 minute wait time of comparing my friends trophies, thank god! The trophy system still needs some tweaks but I love the idea of the new text chat, we just need voice chat now!

Yeah, but the 360 also had gold membership paid subscriptions since day 1, so I guess the question is, are PS3 owners willing to pay for a better system? I think most are, but for me since I have both consoles I'd be hesitant to buy a subscription to both.

XBL had all of those features from day 1 because it is a very different kind of setup. You don't play online on the PSN the same way you do on XBL. XBL is a giant server that the player fully connects to. When playing games the player joins into PVP groups and then plays. Because of that kind of a connection it is very easy to send data between groups of users regardless of what game they are on.

Players don't really fully connect to the PSN servers. The PSN essentially just does constant checks on the user. They have a conversation similar to, "hey, you there?. Yeah, I'm here. Cool, what you doing? Whatever I want. Alright, sweet." All the while you are connected to a separate server that has been contracted by the game publisher to play the game Client/Server style. Maintaining constant streaming data between a group of friends all playing on different servers is a whole different animal than XBL.

Personally I prefer Client/Server over PVP any day.

Call me a cynic, but i get the feeling this update's primary reason for release is to get demand for the chat pad up. Why else hold off on cross-game voice chat?

Don't worry. Headsets are obsolete now that you have text-chat!

Text chat is nice. It is just to slow to make it practical in game. The PS3 needs the party system that the Xbox 360 has. I definitely prefer the Playstation 3 but the one big advantage the 360 has is the party system. I am sure Sony is working on a cross game voice chat/party chat system. I just hope they would at least announce it. Maybe for firmware 3.0....maybe....

Firmware 2.70 caused all my videos streamed by Media Server to become "Unsupported Data" except the mpeg format ones. :sad: I'm going to reload the videos into MediaTomb and we'll see what happens.

Actually, there are a few more, including 2.41, which patched the major system-bricking bug from 2.40. The instant messages are a cool improvement and easier to use that MSN on xBox L!VE

I dont know how many of you ps3 owners listen to other podcasts, but one of the guys on Joystiqs podcast brought up a good point, though I am not going to type an essay length post here like his explanation was, the ps3 probably isnt capable of voice chat like the XBL party system because of the Operating system the ps3 uses hogging all the RAM. I know flame me all day fanboy idiots but he may be right or either Sony is the biggest bag of idiots around for not giving me party chat on my ps3 by now, you know its bad when I party up with my friends on xbox live to then talk over the xbox party with my ps3 friends to talk while gaming.

I reset my MediaTomb configuration and reloaded all the media files and it fixed this issue for me. The videos that were "Unsupported Data" before the update are still unsupported.

Someone said something on the forum about how the text chat feature is a "stepping stone" or something, like a proving ground to see how many people use it.
That is ridiculous! If you're in the middle of a match, you're hardly gonna take the time to text someone in the middle of the action. I am a Playstation lover, but I will not defend this feature when I know that the other console has the better version of it.

I got the update, and since then I've been unable to connect to the internet at all it keeps saying I have no connection when it worked perfectly fine before. I've entered the wireless in about four times now and it is still having the same problem, anyone else expirencing the same thing?
