I don't consider myself a real "veteran" by any mean, but judging by the massive mouth-breathing idiocy witnessed in the last two "SG Paranoia" threads, one could assume the entire population of SG has gone mad with rabies. Of course this isn't the case though, it's just from a few people.

The front page of the Lobby has been pretty boring over the past few days. Dance monkeys, dance! And entertain me with interesting stories and sturring debates. God knows I dont feel like making a thread myself o.0.

And also, @Rocko's first post: I cant tell if that first post of yours was accidentally perfectly proving Cam's point or was intentional razor sharp wit, but either way, I lol'd.

Edit: McChicken, you were "that guy" in the thread that was just pumping out mindless banter left and right, so dont say "I just noticed it in my thread".

EDIT2: Ugh and to Mr. Woot and the rest of you: Yes Lono might be leaving. Yes, That sucks. Just shut up about it though.

same here, back when I started there were a few threads made daily and conversations went on. Now here are like 20 or so new threads daily and most of them get derailed quickly. I actualy slow posting drasticaly, I think I make like 10 post every week, when I made like like 15 daily( I think the first day I was on this site I made like 25 posts in like 3 threads...)

Or not even just the "older" members, but members that are newer that have shown great maturity. I know that I'm guilty of posting about Bacon Salt, but there's literally nothing else to post about. The Wii section is dead, Handheld section doesn't get much activity, PC Gaming never has anything of interest to me, same with Multiplayer gaming, and I don't own a PS3 or 360. The Lobby is good and all until you get the flood of new-ish n00b members that ignore the rules and make dupe topics and troll.

If we had a Mature Members section where you get invited in, not a default post count or time of membership, that would be sweet. We would be able to scout for people that look like they're mature and discuss intelligent things, not derail topics into talking about Bacon Salt...however delicious and tasty it may be!

Hey guys, feel free to suggest ideas (or PM me if you'd rather spare yourself the peer review process.)

The issue is part success, part laziness (people recreating new threads instead of continuing on existing threads two pages in that they didn't bother searching for), and just randomness...

I'd love to hear "reasonable" ideas to keep things on track and while this isn't a cattle call, I'd be interested in know who (if anyone) would be willing to put their typing fingers and eyes where their mouth (figuratively of course) is...

I agree with Ploogle's idea of a part of the forum that people have to earn the right to have access to it. As soon as they'd been recommended enough times by people already in the "mature members" forum they'd be allowed in. The only problem with it is that I'm not sure I'd be allowed in .

I try to be sensible and helpful, and now I'm more used to the forums, I like the idea of those who aren't spamming having their own little bit.

Now, all we have to do is be careful with what we post.

MightyMutt
04-06-2009, 07:28 AM
Not totally disagreeing with what you are saying but there are some factors not been taken into account. It has already been mentioned that it is a slow gaming portion of the year, not aided by gaming companies keeping things very close to their chest in the run up to this year's E3. However, they are other factors leading to a decrease in forum content and activity.

The biggest single drop off I've witnessed was during the launch of the SGC Blogs, where everyone put time & effort into writing their own blogs rather than posting on the forums as much. Even though this probably means there is more content on SG, it does mean there is less in the forums and what is there may not be as well organized, as the type of person to put together a well thought out thread may be more inclined to putting their time into a blog post.

I also know that with many of the SG staff being made very busy in the 9-5 jobs (both Doc & Dave have started new jobs recently) that this may have kept them away from the forums more than they had hoped and may make the forums lack a bit of cohesion & direction.

I hope these will be seen as explanations rather than excuses and quite frankly it is something that has been concerning me for some time and something that I hope will improve, it saddens me to see that forum members such as Digit, Charliwag & Inzader have left because they were good members of the community. The SG staff can entertain you, encourage you to be part of the community and provide a safe & fun environment for you guys to interact with each other & ourselves. What we can't do is force you to post or tell you what to say and since so much of the content of the forums comes from you guys, if your not being proactive & making new & interesting threads then it doesn't matter how much your monkey's dance.

I really am considering dropping off the site if things don't start clearing up quickly. I love this place, but there's only so much I can take.

I think the thing with using green and red rep to determine if someone should get into the mature members area of the site is that it is an unreliable way of telling. There are plenty of established members that are on the lowest level or with red rep. People give out rep for ridiculous reasons. I got positive rep for posting a list of what was on the front page of the PS3 forums one time...and I got neg rep for agreeing with regua about that IBTL and Facepalm stuff.

Bad idea.

The Lobby turned into a car accident this weekend, and it's the ugly kind you can't look away from and causes a backup on the interstate, and my preaching of chilling out went unnoticed, and I guess that's my fault.

I've only been on here for a week or so, so my opinion may not be as accurate as the forum vets. But I am finding it hard to find decent topics to post. 60 posts a week isn't that great. Personally I think all rep should be public and negs reps should be able by the person to appeal to a mod to get it removed if it's complete BS.

Each rep should also have a Y/N on it so any one who is viewing that person's rep can agree with it or not and that in turn would would make the strength of the rep increase or decrease slightly.

Sadly unless heavily modded pretty much every rep system is abused.

On the note of staying on topic, the forums have been slowing down and with the current confusion that will only increase but normally it seems to pickup during the summer along with new members. Major threads tend to remain the same for about a week until some interesting comes up

Regua's right guys... and for the record... the karma system? It's here because you guys asked for it. Other people cannot "make" the forums behave how people want it to behave, the people contributing to it can.

The bacon thread... it's no big deal. If you want nothing to do with it, it's one thread... skip it. That should be LOW on anyone's list of concerns.

A "mature/veteran" forum... not happening, so let's not waste any more time with that... the idea people have to wade through a crappy forum to get to a good one isn't the best solution.

Positive reinforcement of good topics/posts, merging of duplicate threads, pointing out how to use the search feature of the forums when applicable, avoiding personal insults, etc. Those are things that should be high on the list of things to work on, and they're things EVERYBODY can do.

If someone makes a "random discussion" thread like the bacon thread and it's active... let them have fun with it... it's contained. The forum shouldn't fill up with things of that sort and if they do... we'll take a second look then.

That's a little over-dramatic don't you think? Lono hasn't left yet, the Red Show will be continuing, and the forums aren't under fire. Someone created a thread pointing out issues with it and it prompted some discussion of ideas. It's not the first, second, third, or last time that will happen.
