The rumours have been flying thick and fast around the blogosphere for quite some time but now it’s official: LEGO Rock Band is coming soon in the most unconventional, unplanned and quite frankly unnecessary franchise mashup ever conceived.
Could the LEGO game franchise get any more ludicrous? See what I think over the jump, and let us know what you think…
LEGO Rock Band is as simple as it sounds: it’s Rock Band, right, except everything is made from hard plastic blocks with neither the acoustic audacity nor the comfort of most conventional musical instruments.
As it’s LEGO (you shout that, yeah?) everything will be family-friendly. This means you go through fantasy lands and blocky cityscapes when you’re out on the road, rather than hitting up the Vans Warped Tour and Ozzfest. It also means the track listing is full of clean, fresh-faced songs such as Kung Fu Fighting. And The Final Countdown.
As is the in-thing these days, you’ll be able to customise your LEGO figure rocker and their plastic instruments of death (sorry, “awesomeness” or whatever). As isn’t the in-thing these days, you can customise your roadies, managers and entourage too. Errrr.
Top it all off with some kooky, wacky animations like we’ve seen in LEGO Star Wars, LEGO Indiana Jones and LEGO Batman and some as-yet-unspecified “innovative new elements of game play” and you have yourself an ultimate money-spinning cash cow. Moooo.
The thing is, is it really necessary? As far as I can see in the press release, there are no special instruments being produced (presumably because sharp plastic edges on guitars, drums and microphones would spell a lot of cuts and bruises). There’s nothing going on except a plastic yellow facelift.
In the name of all that’s good and great in this world, why not save Travellers Tales the effort and just put all the songs up on the Rock Band download store? I can’t imagine LEGO being a massive brand name for a game like Rock Band, especially since the game is doing so well on its own.
Rather than give us a dumbed-down, additive-infused edition of Rock Band with - literally - blockier graphics, why not just sling the songs the way of the main game and let kids play that way? Saves money, saves effort, saves me the trouble of writing things like this.
Maybe I’m wrong though. Will anyone here buy LEGO Rock Band?
