http://sarcasticgamer.com/wp/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/qtv.jpg (http://sarcasticgamer.com/wp/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/qtv.jpg)Qtv has announced (http://playstation.joystiq.com/2009/04/21/qtv-launching-iptv-service-on-playstation-2/) plans to turn your Playstation into a media source, routing all sorts of audio/video goodness to your HDTV with minimal effort.* They were at the National Association of Broadcasters show in Las Vegas yesterday and were praising the gospel of media aggregation (both from the internet and your portable media devices) to a single player hooked to your TV.

It’s not the newest innovation ever, but it gets much better. Read on to see why…

Sure, there are other companies out there trying to do the same thing, but the Qtv guys hope they win out over the competition.* They’re pulling out all the stops too supporting DivX, h.264, XviD, mp3s, internet radio, YouTube, and many more media formats.* They even go so far as to say you’ll be able to access games, shopping and interactive services after you buy their All-In-One Internet TV Media Player for your Playstation.

You may notice that I’ve been referring to the necessary console as “Playstation” instead of detailing it.* I’ll be honest, it was intentional.* If I’d said “$50 PS2 software to hook up to your HDTV” you would’ve probably laughed your way down the hall or wherever you are.* Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure the PS2 can make a capable media hub, but not for an HDTV owner.* Even with the best HDTVs, PS2 graphics leave a lot to be desired, plus you’ve got the added issue that the PS2 typically doesn’t have a hard drive connected to it, so according to their diagram, it’s relying on a home PC to be the surrogate streaming device.* You see the PS2 will basically be turned into a thin client for software running on your PC.

I’m sorry to tell you guys, but your $50 software for last-gen consoles has already been done on today’s consoles, and largely for free.

What the Qtv guys are hoping (in my opinion) is that they can snatch a percentage or two of the 120M+ PS2 owners out there.* It’s a cash grab in my opinion.* Maybe it’s a cash grab to potentially fund their planned expansion to “newer consoles at a later time.”* I wonder of “a later time” means so far from now they’ll then be consider “the older consoles?”
