Please don’t make a Fallout MMORPG.* There, I said it.

Feel free to send your flames to me after the jump (but hear me out first!).

Okay, I’ll wait until you quit screaming.

Are you done? Okay, let’s continue.

I’ve dabbled in just about every major MMO, starting with MUDs and MOOs back in college, all the way to beta testing Auto Assault and Warhammer, up to just canceling my account with Warcraft (again) while I catch up on my single-player game backlog.

So I like to think of myself a connoisseur of the genre.* Having introduced myself as a self-proclaimed expert, as much as I would love it, I cannot stand to think of the launch of a Fallout MMO by Interplay or Bethesda.*Again, deep breaths.* Calm down.

Let me rephrase that.* I would love nothing more than a Fallout based MMO: I’m just afraid of what they’re going to do to it.

Over the last decade, when I would go to the local game retailer to buy the latest and greatest MMORPG, I would have high hopes.* I would tear the plastic open and happily think, “Oh, boy, “Matrix Online!”.* But after a matter of weeks or months (and sometimes MUCH less), I would find myself slowly either losing interest or the following nagging thought would start pinging around in my head:*”Well, it’s not bad, but it’s no Warcraft.”

As soon as that poisonous thought entered my system, the game’s fate was inevitable; I would quickly lose interest, thinking of a dozen ways the game could have been done better.

When I think of the littered remains the MMOs I’ve ground under the heel of my jackboot, I think back sadly.* I spent YEARS of my life, several weeks at a time, trying out the latest abortion to seemingly designed to disappoint.

What needs to happen now is a present day or future style MMO to come along and work through the other genres.* The fantasy MMO has been done to death, and its perfect distilled vision found in Warcraft will most likely not be beaten by anything else out there. *That train has left the station, so stop grinding out your “Vanguard”, “Lineage”, “Final Fantasy” clones in hopes of toppling that series (But then again, no one thought that Sony’s “Everquest” reign would ever end).

Fallout seems like the common sense answer to break through the MMO embargo Warcraft has established on gamers.* The problem is that there’s such an undercurrent of hope from the fanboyz for an eventual Fallout MMO, that it’s almost destined to not only disappoint, but fail.* And fail miserably, so much so that it will break the brand.

An example of this is the “Star Wars Galaxies” franchise, which was so abysmal that people have to be extremely nervous about Bioware’s and Lucasarts’ revamp of the Star Wars Old Republic as an MMO.* I’m excited in the way I would be excited about the Fallout MMO; hopeful, but expecting the worst.

Warcraft has set the bar so high for the entire MMO concept, many new attempts seem like poor copies of Warcraft.* Anyone remember seeing the “exclamation/question mark” concept in MMOs prior to Warcraft?* Now it’s bloody everywhere.* I can see it now, a Brother of Steel in full power armor, standing in some bombed out building with maybe not an exclamation mark…maybe a glowing fist.* But you see where I’m going.

Warcraft is a great MMO.* Come on, it’s a ground breaker, and what they do, they do extremely well.* Christ, I’ve got two 80s there now, and I enjoyed my time there.* I’m just thinking that developers are so intent on trying to “beat” the juggernaut Warcraft and yet continually use the same mechanics with a few tweaks and a new coat of paint, that they just seem to fall flat on their respective faces.

So while I’m excited that Interplay will eventually sell the rights to Fallout to Bethesda (or Bethesda will loot the rights from the corpse of Interplay (http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/bethesda-may-sue-over-fallout-mmo_8)) and that the game will be cranked out, I’m *hoping that a few more years and innovations come down the line so it’s not just “Warcraft with Power Armor”.
