View Full Version : PS2 RPG's
I was looking for some advice on the best, turn based preferably, RPG's out there for PS2..?
I have some, but if there are any in particular you like (a reason would be good as opposed to 'x game is cool'), give them a mention. I'm not too bothered about graphics, gameplay and story are far more important. Thanks.
Yours.
Shane86 11-22-2007, 09:44 AM you may have heard of final fantasy 10? Also the Dragon Quest Series, oh and Dark Chronicle and Suikoden V too
you may have heard of final fantasy 10?
I didn't buy it because everyone I know said it was terrible. Maybe I should give it a blast on the machine then.
Whitefire351 11-22-2007, 10:53 AM star ocean till end of time, grandia, kingdom harts, anything made by tri-ace
Black Lace 11-22-2007, 12:20 PM I would recommend Drakenguard, if you can find it. It's not turn-based, but the graphics are amazing for PS2 and the storyline is highly absorbing. Also, it's persistently challenging without being impossible to beat.
...suddenly I really miss my PS2...

(I know its un-related, but...)
I would have updated to something like an xbox 360 already, but here in England the cost of them is so much (average game price is £45/US$90), and there are still tons of PS2 titles that are good that I haven't played, I'd rather just wait until they're more in my price range. And besides, some games never get boring.
Black Lace 11-22-2007, 12:44 PM I know it well ;) Hell, I still play my old NES occasionally.
Anyway, back to the topic, before I get busted for not sticking to the topic I made in the first place lol.
Rekenmachine 11-22-2007, 02:09 PM I asked my friend about some good RPG's and he said one he enjoyed most was Star Ocean, because of it's length and customisation. I played it too for like an hour and it seemed pretty cool.
Xenosaga II is not recommended due to its short length.
As far as gameplay and story goes, you can't go wrong with a Final Fantasy. My friend's Top 3 is:
1) Final Fantasy X
2) Final Fantasy XII
3) Final Fantasy X-2
Let's see, Kingdom Hearts is nice too, if you're into stuff like that. Hard to explain what's so good about it... It's just a unique experience.
And I would also recommend Dragon Quest, 'cause it's funny ass hell.
Well, I suggest you read some reviews and pick one up. Don't buy 'm all, as you'll be busy for 300+ hours. Have fun :D.
And don't worry about going off-topic, that tends to happen around here. I mean, one thread went from the topic starter bragging about he 'pwned' a noob, and now it's a discussion about cake, pie and pake.

I'm home lol.
DanceDance 05-09-2008, 05:55 PM Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 is easily my favorite RPG. And not just for the PS2...I mean ever! If you dig on turn-based JRPG's, then that is the one for you, man. They also released the new version of it, Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 FES, so if you can find it, get that re-release. Lots more content and some other extras that weren't there the first time around.
Atlus makes awesome games, but they also have a tendancy to disappear because they never print a whole lot of them, so if you find it, BUY IT!

I love almost all of Atlus' games, but somehow the idea of commiting teen suicide with a magic gun to summon demons never appealed to me... Weird, huh?
DanceDance 05-10-2008, 04:14 PM Well, as far as "reasons to shoot yourself in the head" go, saving the world is probably an acceptable one.
Paladin58 05-10-2008, 04:19 PM I always thought the 'Tales' series was pretty engaging. Mind you, I have only played 'T. o. Symphonia' on Gamecube, but I know that 'Tales of the Abyss' is out for PS2.
Joe P 05-10-2008, 04:57 PM I'm a nerd for the crappy magna stereotypical story lines so if u like overdramatic character designs enough to put up with bad camera angles then the last 3 dot Hack's have all been enough for me to want to complete them as fully as possible

Agreed.
George McBain 05-12-2008, 04:55 PM I have heard great stuff about Rogue Galaxy. You can still find that in game stores for about $40 and it's by the DQ people.

DQ PEOPLE?!?! I love me a cookie dough Blizzard, I'll have to try that game out.
/sarcasm
I actually have no idea who/what that is, that just popped into my head when I read that.

DQ = Dragon Quest and I meant the one on PS2, which was done by Level 5 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Level_5)
Ploogle 05-15-2008, 04:10 PM Kingdom Hearts 1, 2, and the CoM remake.

one of my favorite RPGs for the PS2! absolutely fantastic game! it's not turn based though.
randomperson 06-06-2008, 11:35 PM Final Fantasy

Wouldn't say SMT: Persona 3 is the best RPG I've ever played (I'm partial to the Lunar series for that), but it's definitely IMO the best RPG, turn-based or no, in the past five years or so. The story is where it really shines, with the dialog and voice acting very close behind... no, the combat isn't the best aspect of the game.
Aside from P3 though, on the PS2 games like Xenosaga and Aterlier Iris (probably spelled the name incorrectly) are great turn-based events, and some I haven't heard mentioned here yet. Kingdom Hearts is absolutely a blast, and FFX, while I only have a few hours put into it, I've heard many great things about from many different people.
If you need good RPGs for the PS2, you've got plenty to choose from.
Ala Douche 06-11-2008, 02:06 AM i still vote for rogue galaxy... such an unheard of game that's sooo good!
@Cy4n: bay area FTW!
sepercrod 06-11-2008, 04:40 AM I've played quite a few RPGs for the PS2. If you want to get the most playtime for the hours spent, then I have a few suggestions:
Growlanser: Generations (basically 2 games, multiple endings, saved chars transfer from 2 to 3)
Disgaea (many endings, new game+, very solid sidequests/unlockables, you get to throw penguins that explode O.O)
Star Ocean: Til the End of Time (long game that requires some reflexes and combos to get through it, new game+)

I completely forgot about those three (four?), but I have to say... Growlanser hasn't ever beeno n my list of "must-haves." I love the battle system, but the rest of the game... I could really do without. Guess that's what happens when you try to upgrade a very Japanese PS1 RPG series.
consolerpgdude 06-14-2008, 11:14 PM I loved Final Fantasy 9, Grandia 2 and Star Ocean 2.
Oh yeah, also it didn't have the world's greatest graphics but I loved and played the heck outta
both Legend of Legaia games.

I absolutely agree! I have yet to play a Shin Megami Tensei game that I haven't fallen in love with. It's my favorite RPG series on any playform. I just wish more of the series would make it to the US. :(
Edit: Oh, and probably the easiest introduction to the series are the Digital Devil Saga games because they don't require the demon micromanagement the other games do. I also really like Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner - Raidou Kuzunoha versus the Soulless Army (I can't think of a game with a longer title) because of the japanese noir setting. It's also notable as the only game in the series to have real-time combat rather than turnbased combat.
