View Full Version : Orange Box Suffers From Framerate Issues, Too

In an interview earlier this year, Valve Software founder Gabe Newell referred to PlayStation 3 as "a waste of everybody's time." This attitude shows in the development structure of The Orange Box. While the PC and Xbox 360 versions were handled by Valve, the PS3 port was handed off to an internal team at EA. Originally scheduled to be released day and date with the PC and 360 versions, the PS3 Orange Box has been delayed until December. PS3 owners, forced to watch from the sidelines as their gaming kindred inundates them with tales of Half-Life 2, Team Fortress 2 and Portal, continue to wait patiently for their chance to take a stroll through Valve's universe.
After spending a significant amount of time with a near final version of the PS3 game, it's apparent that this version suffers from a number of technical flaws, which at best merely hinder game play and at worst make the experience downright unplayable. Framerate is a consistent issue throughout the Half-Life series of games included in The Orange Box. One moment you'll be cruising through the game at 30 frames per second and the next you'll be enjoying a slideshow of series protagonist Gordon Freeman cruising down the river. However, Portal suffers from no such technical hiccups and is on its way to being a pitch-perfect port of the spatial reasoning exercise. Due to a server connection issue, we were unable to get any time with Team Fortress 2.
With the clock ticking, EA has a limited amount of time to fix the glaring issues which plague this port of The Orange Box. Unfortunately, it seems that, once again, PlayStation 3 owners are doomed to suffer through another substandard version of a multiplatform game.
Not really all that surprising since the PS3 version wasn't really cared for by Valve, and since a lower framerate happened with Madden '08 on PS3 too (both EA devs). But it still sucks for those of you that were planning on buying.
Kiljoy 11-23-2007, 11:59 PM Honestly, valve makes great games, but they are assholes.
darkwonders 11-24-2007, 12:39 AM guess i'll get this for the 360 for xmas...
DaDillsta 11-24-2007, 02:15 AM Yeah, that's why I chose the 360 over the PS3. Lack of support, little games at the time.
Dexyn 11-24-2007, 03:43 AM Grats Valve.
Mr Eibmoz 11-24-2007, 04:32 AM Pretty sure that Infinity Ward set the example here in actually caring about the port.
mrpuggywuggy 11-24-2007, 05:39 AM yeah this is a shame you have to look at call of duty 4 as the standard that ports should reach but games like pro evo soccer 2008 and now the orange box are full of frame rate problems and should not even get a release date untill they work perfectly.
How come infinity ward can get the job done but konami EA and others fail with ps3 ports?
we as ps3 owners are getting screwed by all the rubbish ports and i for one am getting sick of it.
keith22 11-24-2007, 11:41 AM Honestly, valve makes great games, but they are assholes.
no they are not
darkwonders 11-24-2007, 11:50 AM Yeah, that's why I chose the 360 over the PS3. Lack of support, little games at the time.
There's no exuse for developers to make crappy games for the PS3 anymore. Infinity Ward really put the bar by having a game that runs better on the PS3 than the 360.
If there is a bad port, it's because the developers are lazy
Kiljoy 11-24-2007, 12:04 PM no they are not
Yes they are, I sent Gabe never called me back!
And anyways Kojima > Gabe
Mr Eibmoz 11-24-2007, 01:19 PM They were going to do the PS3 one in house, but Gabe ate the team OMGWTFLOLZ!!!!!!ROFFFLLL!!!!!!
*ahem*
¬_¬
Garwalker 11-24-2007, 01:30 PM If there is a bad port, it's because the developers are lazy
Or maybe they don't want to invest alot of time and money when no one buys games on that particular console.
It's pretty sad when a great game like Ratchet and Crank can't sell over 100k.
Valve is busy with other things. It sounds like the PS3 takes extra time to do development with hence all the delays.
Kiljoy 11-24-2007, 01:34 PM no thats not the reason garwalker, Gabe actually stated he hates the PS3 and does not want to work on it, my theory is he just can handle the power of the PS3.

Why don't you tell that to the guys over at Infinity Ward... Who not only got the game out at the same time, but also got the PS3 to play better than the 360 :p
V3NOM 11-24-2007, 02:13 PM Why don't you tell that to the guys over at Infinity Ward... Who not only got the game out at the same time, but also got the PS3 to play better than the 360 :p
The PS3 still takes extra time or extra manpower to develop for. Whether it's actually harder to program for or not, it's still different and new, so it has to be learned by programmers before they can work with it. The 360 uses an architecture that is very similar to the PC architecture that Valve worked exclusively with until Orange Box. The 360 has less of a learning curve to program for.
So Infinity Ward either finished the 360 version first and waited until the PS3 was finished to ship. Or, far more likely, they had enough manpower to set a chunk of their programmers on the task of learning the PS3 from the start so they could finish their work at about the same pace as the others.

Also Infinity Ward is a console developer. They have expertise on how to do cross platform gaimng. Valve for the most part has strictly done PC development and Xbox and 360 has close ties to PC development. PS3 is nothing like PC development.

Valve had nothing to do with the PS3 version. It was all handled by EA people...
shadowtech 11-24-2007, 08:20 PM ...my theory is he just can handle the power of the PS3.
That's probably it.
Garwalker 11-24-2007, 09:08 PM Valve had nothing to do with the PS3 version. It was all handled by EA people...
Exactly. Valve does not want to touch the PS3. They just want to work on their next game.
darkwonders 11-24-2007, 10:40 PM Exactly. Valve does not want to touch the PS3. They just want to work on their next game.
If it wasn't for HL2, I'd really hate valve...
naruto20 11-25-2007, 06:20 PM Honestly, valve makes great games, but they are assholes.
valve didnt do the port for ps3 its the EA idoits who are doing it.
darkwonders 11-25-2007, 06:50 PM valve didnt do the port for ps3 its the EA idoits who are doing it.
And it's because Valve think they are too high and mighty to touch a PS3's architecture...
Kiljoy 11-25-2007, 08:31 PM valve didnt do the port for ps3 its the EA idoits who are doing it.
I know that, but you missed my point, I was saying that they make great games, but they are assholes because they refuse to even touch the PS3, instead sending it to EA.
darkwonders 11-25-2007, 08:50 PM I know that, but you missed my point, I was saying that they make great games, but they are assholes because they refuse to even touch the PS3, instead sending it to EA.
Correction, they make a great game... I can't think of anything outside of half-life 2 that they've been working on. (and that took them 6 years!)
Well team fortress and portal, but portal is part of half-life 2. and Team fortress 2 has been in works for as long as half-life 2
Andreal 11-25-2007, 10:54 PM These claims that Valve are "assholes" seem silly to me. Why are they assholes for sticking to what they know? I mean, it's done all over the show, for example:
Mass Effect - Xbox only, are Bioware therefore assholes?
Assassin's Creed - No PC, are Ubisoft therefore assholes?
Heavenly Sword - PS3 only, are Ninja Theory therefore assholes?
Just because Valve decided to make a game on the platform they know doesn't make them assholes.
So maybe you are annoyed that they gave it to EA instead of trying themselves? Well I would say that valve programmed it exclusivly for the PC and then EA came along and said hey, we'll port it. At which point valve can decide a)PS3 owners can just go without, or b)EA can make the port and PS3 owners can get what EA come up with. I don't think valve ever had any intention of porting the game to consoles so how does that make them any different from other games that program to one platform exclusivly?
Btw, those games were just games that randomly poped into my head, there are hundreds more like them.
Kiljoy 11-25-2007, 11:31 PM Wow your dumb, considering Gabe HATES the PS3, he is not doing it simply because he knows the pc and 360, it is because he has hated the PS3 since it came out, he even stated he thinks it was crap and Sony should just start over.
KeavyRain 11-26-2007, 02:14 AM No offense, but is there anyone out there that wants Orange Box that hasn't already bought it for PC or 360?
I think the delay has killed any chance of the PS3 version selling enough to recoup development costs. If it had released with the 360 and PC versions I bet it would have sold well enough but now...
Emophia 11-26-2007, 04:06 AM I know that, but you missed my point, I was saying that they make great games, but they are assholes because they refuse to even touch the PS3, instead sending it to EA.
That's because unlike a 360, the PS3 is very very different from the PC... The port would probably be even worse if Valve themselves did it...
I don't mind though... I've had the PC perfect version since day one...
Andreal 11-26-2007, 08:11 AM Wow your dumb
Haha, personal insults, ok whatever mate.
considering Gabe HATES the PS3, he is not doing it simply because he knows the pc and 360, it is because he has hated the PS3 since it came out
This is a extremely personal opinion for you to be stating as fact. Do you know this is why he decided to do it? Did you jump inside his head for a day and find out? I don't doubt you that he said he hated the PS3, nor do I doubt that it is a possible reason, to say it is the definate reason is extremely narrowminded.
Also I don't believe he would cripple his game just because he personally doesn't like a console. That just doesn't make any business sence and Gabe must have some business knowledge or he would not have founded a company as successful as valve. He most likely have met with high ranking employees and discussed how viable PS3 was, I don't think he has a "I don't like the PS3 so we are not going to put our game on it because they deserve to suffer" mentality.
At any rate, feel free to criticise my post and we might be able to have a discussion on these here discussion boards. Or you could just throw more insults, I really don't care.

Well it sure doesn't make any business sense to openly say that he hates the PS3, then turn around and be like "Oh btw, buy the Orange box on the PS3 if you have one." It would have been better off not even trying to make a PS3 version if they are going to butcher it so much...

He is quoted saying he refuses to work on the PS3 because he thinks it was a giant mistake, it is not opinion, it is FACT, that is why he won't work on PS3, if he simply said it is different and he wants to stick with what he knows it would be fine. Oh and also it's sarcastic gamer, get a thick skin.

He is quoted calling it a disaster.
V3NOM 11-26-2007, 10:16 AM Wow your dumb, considering Gabe HATES the PS3, he is not doing it simply because he knows the pc and 360, it is because he has hated the PS3 since it came out, he even stated he thinks it was crap and Sony should just start over.
Did it ever occur to you to think of why Gabe hates the PS3? Probably because it has a difficult architecture to program for, one that he finds confusing enough to deter him from learning it.
I doubt that it's because Gabe has a personal vendetta against Sony. He specifically said in every quote out there that he didn't like the PS3. Not the company as a whole -- the PS3.
Kiljoy 11-26-2007, 10:18 AM when did I say he had a vendetta against sony? all I said was he hates the PS3, which is true.
Garwalker 11-26-2007, 11:55 AM Valve has every right to not do development for the PS3. They admit that they hate the architecture. They admit it has a steep learning curve. They made the right choice to let someone else give it a try. Too bad EA can't figure it out as well.
Kiljoy 11-26-2007, 12:54 PM Oh I know they do, but it still isn't nice to us PS3 owners.
Emophia 11-26-2007, 02:02 PM Valve are PC developers, and the 360 is as close to a PC as any console has been... So it's quite obvious why...
V3NOM 11-26-2007, 07:11 PM when did I say he had a vendetta against sony? all I said was he hates the PS3, which is true.
Then why do you think Gabe hates the PS3?
Once again. The architecture. Reread my post and you'll see the point I was making.
Kiljoy 11-26-2007, 08:33 PM He said he did, he said it himself, I can't say for sure why he hates it personally, although he has said one of the reasons was the way Sony handled it.

No major issues... Besides a few minor framerate hiccups in Episode 2...
keith22 12-05-2007, 11:44 PM I know that, but you missed my point, I was saying that they make great games, but they are assholes because they refuse to even touch the PS3, instead sending it to EA.
Why waste time on a complex console when they can start to focus on hl2 episode 3
mashedPenguin 12-06-2007, 02:16 AM He said he did, he said it himself, I can't say for sure why he hates it personally, although he has said one of the reasons was the way Sony handled it.
I don't disagree that Gabe hates the PS3. He does but the reason that valve isn't doing the port themselves is that they do not want to invest in the technology and development resources to do PS3 development in house. It is easy to move a PC game to the 360 and vice versa. The PS3 requires more effort and therefore more expense due to its different architecture.
Valve just isn't interested in spending millions of dollars to become proficient at developing on the PS3 when they don't see a return on their investment.
I don't think valve are alone in disliking developing for the PS3. They aren't the only ones to have complained about it.
Kiljoy 12-06-2007, 03:35 AM you see thats the thing, they hate the ps3 and they don't want to spend the time or money to make their own game really good, that is what pisses me off, they would rather port it and have it have problems then do it themselves.
This shows that in the future we probably won't get any good valve games ported to the PS3, because if they don't care to learn the architecture of the PS3 with something as big as the orange box. I hope I am wrong though.

No I think you are probably right. Valve just doesn't see the PS3 architecture going anywhere worthwhile long term (rightly or wrongly) and doesn't want to make the investment in people, equipment and expertise to work on it in house.
Though I imagine the porting teams are going to get better at doing their thing. So future valve games may well be ported better.
