View Full Version : What was the PS1's crowning moment...?

There has been many an argument on many gaming BBS's about the merits of a person's favourite game on PS1, but Final Fantasy is usually lauded as its pinnacle. My question is, was it actually..?

From a gamers point of view, and especially an RPG gamers view this is also usually the case. I mean, gamefaqs.com voted it as its best game for PS1. So that's pretty tough to argue against, but there are other games that are worthy of such praise..?

Take for example Xenogears, which ended up being the poor relation to FF7. The story was better, more complex/deeper, had better characterisation and was cheaper to produce so was better value for money. Shouldn't a title like that be accredited this honour, instead of the monstrously (at the time) expensive to produce FF7. I mean, the original budget for Xenogears was for three discs, but was cut back to help pay for FF7. So gamers might have been stating that as the PS1's pinnacle as opposed to FF7.

What do folks think..?

I think FF7 was an embarasingly poor game with some nice music and FMVs. The story is awful (and poorly told), the gameplay revolves around watching about 30hours of summon animations over and over and the levels are so piss poorly designed. No way was that the best of the PS1.

The Doom collection clearly was ^_^

My PS1's Crowning moment was when I traded it in for a PS2.

I'd have to say Gran Turismo. It added alot of layers and depth to the racing genre.

Second would have to be Metal Gear Solid.

As simple as it was, the Crash Bandicoot series. Those were the games I was raised on (in the gamers sense). Nothing could top those.

To me, Crash Bandicoot seemed like a bad copy of Super Mario. Granted, there was some originality in there, but compared to the Italian plumber, it was a poor effort. I just felt I'd done all of it before, and better.

Crash was out (in the states) before Mario 64... and if you're not referring to Mario 64, but one of the 2D Mario games, then well, I'm not even going to go there...

Crash Bandicoot wasn't a free roaming 3D game either, it was 3D "on rails" and provided a much more lush and vibrant world... it's really hard to compare those... in terms of being a system mascot, yeah, they were comparable (at the time), but not in actual games.... at least not in my opinion.

For me, I can't think of the single crowning moment, but when I look back and reminisce, the games I think of are the Crash Bandicoot Games, the Spyro the Dragon Games, the Tomb Raider games (especially the first one), Resident Evil, Metal Gear Solid, and Doom (because it was the first time I had a really impressive PC game on a console gaming experience.) It's hard to nail it down to a single moment. If I had to, the most impressive moment was the first time I booted up Ridge Racer at home.

kula world. no thats a joke.

I actually liked that game (although it was called Roll Away in the states)... I'm hoping it comes to the PS Store soon as I'd like to play it on my PSP. I'd pay $5.99 for that game again! Playing Switchball from XBLA made me want to play Roll Away again...

FFVII got the most play time in my PS but MGS was definately my favourite game. ***RANT WARNING*** But don't get me started on Crash, I thought we'd managed to kill him off with one too many Karting accidents. I wish a similar fate would befall the whole of Mario with his family and friends as well, and if they can arrange to run over sonic and spyro on route thats all good. God I HATE platformers. Am I the only person in the world thats not happy to see Mario back again? Between all that princess saving, karting, tennis and golf etc he has got to be the laziest plumber in the world and judging by the guy that just re-did my bathroom he's got some stiff competition.
Before i get completely flamed by any Mario fanboys I would point out that I do have respect for what Mario has done for the industry and i'm not stupid enough to believe that Mario64 was not an important game when it came to the growth of the industry, but i'll have to rely on other peoples opinions to talk about how good the game is coz I HATE platformers. Crackdown as about as close as I want to get to a platformer ever again and one advantage to having a 360 these days , as opposed to a PSone then or a PS3 now, is that platformers are scarce on the 360.

I liked kula world at the time, it's probably hilariously bad now. as for the crowning moment of the ps one, FF7, 8, and 9 come to mind first. Then tekken 3, stil my favourite beat-em-up of all time, also vagrant story was brilliant but didn't get the recognition it deserved in its time.

Crash Bandicoot is only Crash Bandicoot if Naughty Dog is credited as the developer... everything else is a cheap imitation in my opinion.

As for platformers, way to be an ass. I now hope whatever YOUR favorite genre is becomes scarce. People, we need to STOP hating on stuff we don't like. Ignore the frickin' genre if you don't like it... but make no mistake, you're not the center of the universe. If I arbitrarily decided genres I didn't like shouldn't exist, there would be no more RPGs, RTSs, sports games, etc... see how doing stuff like that is selfish and stupid?

one advantage to having a 360 these days , as opposed to a PSone then or a PS3 now, is that platformers are scarce on the 360

It's people like you (and attitudes like this) that perpetuate the animosity that's been blown out of proportion by the (relative) anonymity of networks like Xbox Live and PSN. If you don't like something, you don't have to play it... it's pretty frickin' simple.

Whoh! Firstly lets get this straight - I did not kill Mario. Sorry to get your back up but just because I express an opinion on your favourite genre thats no reason to hate on me. If you feel the need to lower the tone of your argument by just hurling insults at me rather than coming up with factual based arguments then maybe its better that we say that our opinions are just different.
Despite the fact that a lot of my previous post was a bit tounge-in-check (a bit sarcastic you might say) the genre was dead along time before I commented on it and if u review any of my other posts you'll see its practically the first negative thing I had to say about any computer games (apart from the RRoD) I was actually saying that the lack of platformers was a positive thing that shows how the industry has evolved and grown, even if it has left people like you behind. I didn't 'arbitrarily decide' that the platform genre doesn't exist that happened all by itself, as such you are welcome to wish all the other genres in the world out of existence, it seemed to work for me!

If you don't like something, you don't have to play it... it's pretty frickin' simple. This IS what happened to platformers, I didn't like them, i stopped playing them so did everyone else and thats why they are scarce on the Xbox nothing to do with expressing my opinion or the 'anonymity of networks like Xbox Live'. Mate you could come round and stand in my house and I'd tell you I hate platformers because that my opinion. I am not the centre of the universe but the gaming universe and I have moved and your just left ranting from your lonely platform.

When every other platform has platformers except the 360, sorry... that's not a sign of the 360 "evolving", that's a sign that they focused too heavily in other areas and neglected the genre. Ratchet & Clank Future and Super Mario Galaxy are hits on their competitor's platforms. Are you telling me Microsoft and other developers opted not to develop any platformers because they've evolved past them? Money earned from selling platformers somehow doesn't spend as well as money earned from Generic FPS #27?

I think the term "shooter box" is what you're looking for... I didn't make it up either. Microsoft earned that rep all on their own. Plus, someday Rare may grace us with Banjo Threeie, so it's not as if they're entirely beyond putting out platformers.

Fair enough I concede to your point about Mairo Galaxy and Rachet and Clank being a sucess, ableit with fairly limited competition on each platform and the rather under whelming response of Japan to Mario Galaxy.
The gaming industry has undoubtably evolved though. For one there was a time when it was all about generic platformer #27 and, like it or not we have moved on to churning out FPS left, right and centre. I'll be the first to hold my hands up and admit that I own Halo 3, CoD4 and The Orange Box for my 360 and why not they are great games. FPS's are not even my favourite genre for the last two weeks i've played nothing but Assassin's Creed and Mass Effect.

The gaming industry has also evolved in a way that you even comment on yourself. Do you ever remember a three way console war that had such a polarisation of game genres? Like you said 360 has FPS, Wii has the casual games market and with the two top titles on PS3, Rachet and Clank being one and Uncharted (which I've heard described as an action platformer) I guess the PS3 is your platform of choice for platforming.

I can not say I'm looking forward to Banjo 3 but I'll reserve judgement until they eventually release something. The less said about Rare's PDZ the better apart from I would say it was good fun multiplayer. If they devise a Banjo multiplayer over Xbox live I may be interested again. Live is another way that the industry has evolved and another reason that the platformer has been under represented as it does not lend itself well to a large multiplayer format.

Maybe that's why I liked it. Never played Mario on the N64. As for Crash Racing, that was fun, too. Except for when the disc got scratched and I couldn't get one of the Medals so I couldn't finish the game.

Crash Bandicoot was my first 3D gaming experience and I remember the hours I spent on the trilogy as well as CTR very fondly.
