Hello huddled masses. Apparently the way we use search engines is changing, and the first in a new revolution in search engines in here, WolframAlpha. Strange name I know, what Wolfram does is give you answers to questions you ask it, as well as useful information related to it, for example:

"What was the weather in Springfield when David Ortiz was born?"

Clearly a very common question. Wolfram first interprets your question, it has a detailed understanding of human language, so it can more or less tell what your asking it, it then finds David Ortiz date of brith, locates Springfield (and based on a number of factors (IP Address, search history), decides which Springfield your most likely to be thinking about) it then looks at a weather database to find the weather results for that date, and displays it for you, in nice, pretty easy to read graphs. All in split seconds.

Why would I need permission from the mods?

Just tried it, it seems like it has very concise information on small pockets of information, such as weather, dates, maths etc. But it lacks information on more common terms, for example I entered 'Portsmouths captain' and it had no idea what I was talking about. Entering 'iPod' gives this 'Development of this topic is under investigation...' showing that they clearly are adding more and more information to it's database.

I'm sure that in a few years time, when it has enough information stored it will be an invaluable tool for finding information, but at the moment, unless your have a very niche query like 'the weather in Portsmouth on 17/08/1991' then it wont be of much use.

I just used this site to find out info on my birthday. Apparently three hours before I was born the cloud cover was at 0%, then it suddenly spiked to 100% cloud cover. Not to mention the duration of the day was 10 hours 24 minutes. Bookmark tab of Wolframalpha now complete... this is a pretty bad ass site!
