View Full Version : Retro Games: Cool? Or Ew

I might be kind of alone on this one, but every time I load up a retro title demo on XBLA I expect nostalgia and hours of fun, reunited with an old forgotten friend. What I end up with is usually about 3 minutes of, "Oh Yeah..." before ditching for the dashboard. There's a reason for this. As time has progressed, we have raised our standards along with the technology.

It's no different, in my opinion, than going 5 mph in a Corvette, trying to relive bike riding as a kid. It's not the same because time marched on. What's old... is still old. These titles just don't compare to today's games. They were incredible in their time, but now.... They're nothing more than a novelty. With that said, I'd like to know where you stand on "Retro Gaming."

Actually I totally donīt understand this whole retro buzz. I got DK Country and Zelda over the Wii VC and it was a total waste of money. Certainly not worth 800points. I had fond memories of DK Country but of course forgot that when you scale 320x240 oldschool graphics up to 720p on a current television you need to keep 6 metres distance to recognise anything.

Anyway theres my 2 cents. Not worth the money and doesnt really work on modern equipment.

Peace!

I know. I think these "fond" memories should remain just that. If people want to spend 3-10 bucks apiece to relive that memory.. go ahead... But I think the hoopla is totally unfounded....

I mean how many games these days are any fun that only use 2 buttons?

Doesn't Gears just use the right trigger and the A button? ::)

no seriously *how? *

You do realize that roadie run and hop over obstacles are the A button, right? Reloading is highly overrated, and who needs more than one weapon? ;D

Oh. Yeah. Sure. A button. I knew that.

Truth be told Gears didn't do alot for me other than visually stimulate and publicly humiliate me. I suck at it. Went back to Vegas,... you know... where I own.

Same with me about gears... lol
But 2 of my friends are better than me at it and my fragile ego cannot live with that (maybe since they had it for months and I just had it for a few days).
Prepare for a summer of nothing but xbox live.

I have the same feeling - the first time I saw a retro game for download on XBL - promising "High Definition" graphics etc etc, I was quite intrigued - not realising of course that the "HD" bit meant the menu screens - those menu screens just make a game for me, y'know?

Downloaded it. Had a look. Realised that I now have a very limited MAME machine in the corner of the room. Deleted. I may download some of these again, just to emphasise the "When I was young..." diatribe to young relatives. They won't believe that we used to play these games for hours and hours and hours...

But then, looking at them, and games now, I can't believe it either.

Yea, but Gears sucks...
I am gonna leave now from the resulting mob that is about to form...

I think this is why they put the "retro" titles up on XBLA, people expect to have the same experience they used to have with it. Microsoft and their money.

For some people it's only specific retro games that are cool, and can suck up hours of time, because they still enjoy it.

But as pointed out earlier, most peoples tastes/expectations change, so they don't like the retro stuff anymore.

Have you met Rothbart? I think the two of you could become great friends.

Smash TV and TMNT arcade still get plenty of play from me. Castlevania SOTN is also great, but a little confusing. A friend and I love Double Dragon (fond memories there).

I think there's plenty of old games worth your time - especially the arcade stuff on the 360 - but I also think that paying for a lot of the games on the Wii is pointless when the ROMs and Emulators (especially for the SNES and Megadrive) can be downloaded to the PC for nothing. :-?

heh
Very true indeed.
I have a question.
What does nostalgia mean?
I don't feel like wiki searching it.
