View Full Version : Xbox live ads
nonmelodic 07-02-2009, 02:24 AM So Microsoft just announced a few days ago that they want to 'Enhance' the Live service with Adverts on the dashboard. Microsoft has been quoted on saying that they won't be 'Intrusive' and 'Will delievr ads relevant to the online community'.
That means sh*t. That could be a freaking pizza hut advert for all Microsoft cares. I mean really, we already pay you about £40 a year to use Live, do you really need more money?
MightyMutt 07-02-2009, 02:34 AM Don't really see why everyone is all up in arms about this. Sure it's a bit annoying but doesn't everyone just do what I do and end up ignoring them, unless it something interesting - in which case I don't mind. :undecided:
If it means that Microsoft don't have to increase the price of Live, then I'll all for it. In fact I'd rather have even more adverts and pay less for Live. :cool2:
Vault Dweller 07-02-2009, 04:07 AM "Enhance" my experience. Right.
If it keeps the price down, whatever. I'm not so attached to my Gold Membership that I'd miss it much should it become a problem. Heck, I've only had it for a few weeks and only play one game online.
Do I want to see a ton of McDonald's adds and Coka-Cola emblems everywhere? Not really, no. And what do they consider to be relevant to the community? Fatty foods and sugary sodas? That sure as heck is not relevant to me. Will it stop me from playing stuff on Live? Not unless it really becomes ugly and intrusive, but then that'd have to be pretty d@mn bad to keep me from Red Faction MP. ;)
multiman33 07-02-2009, 07:03 AM All I can say is that when I am playing live at 2 am and I see an advert for pizza hut, I'll probably take a break and eat pizza rolls.
Seriously though, I'll probably just ignore it. I consider this along the lines with the in game advertising in Burnout and Fight Night. I actually find the huge Burger King adverts to be funny.
MeRcEnArY 07-02-2009, 07:29 AM So long as it stays on the dash board thats cool.
In-game adverts have been arround for a while and they dont annoy me, so if thats the case then thats cool.
Artemas 07-02-2009, 08:00 AM Great. Just bought another theme that I will never get to see:angry:
I have no problems with a company making money it's what they do but come on, Yearly subscriptions, over priced DLC, Over priced pictures, a crappy point system that forces me to keep 3 dollars in points that I can never use, and now ads for games that will probably suck anyway. It wouldn't be so bad if we at least got flying hippos.
halokilla2008 07-02-2009, 08:57 AM Honestly I dont care about the ads. If it means that XBL will be up and running alot better and M$ makes a bit more money I dont care. Ads dont bother me if they did I would be complaining about the SG website.
here's a thought....now that they'll be adding ads....do they really need to charge for LIVE?
do you think they're paving the way for LIVE to be free, or do you think they're just being greedy?

Like any corporation they are using the revenue to not only enhance the system but to also make a profit. Lets say the make $1 million and they only invest 100k in the system thats 100k they didnt have before. So therefore they are improving the system in whatever way they do it. One more thing XBL will never be free if it was free they wouldnt to the updates and maintance(spelled wrong) as well as they do it now.
they better make live free, or at least a little cheaper
rothbart 07-02-2009, 12:45 PM *laughs at people that think ads bringing in more money will somehow ENHANCE Xbox Live*
i guess it's safe to assume that Rothy thinks they are just being greedy....

You made that jump on your own, but assuming ads = better service is silly. Plain silly.
seemed like the most logical jump to make :)
i agree though...ads doesn't equal better quality...

Seriously when microsoft made that statement I couldn't believe it! They probably mean that al the fat kids playing on live at 8pm can order over-priced pizza with their dad's credit card.

*Wonders why rothbart bothers . . .*
No one metiond it "enhancing" XBL, unless i read all the post wrong???
Im sure the inital post said that microsoft said that.
Oh and any one saying that the price of live will come down. . . are you for real?!?! Not in a million years!!!

How is the PS3's new update of 2009 going for you? You can text me your thoughts.:w00t:
You are right though. The ads will just be another cash flow for them.

I don't use text chat any more than anyone else does, but PLEASE tell me you're implying if Sony charged for PSN that it'd automatically be better... say it... DO IT!
MeRcEnArY 07-02-2009, 04:03 PM @Rothbart, so your basicly ONLY calling out halokilla?
Wow. . . smooth move roth . . .

I don't have a minimum quota for laughing at silly notions... if one guy wants to be silly, I'm gonna at least snicker at him. I mean his name is halokilla2008 ... I think he's probably endured worse elsewhere. ;)
GammaFist 07-02-2009, 04:05 PM they better make live free, or at least a little cheaper
I think so too because they already have a boat load of money and its very annoying to have to go buy a card and not have a connection and wast your code!

Noble Evildoer 07-02-2009, 06:09 PM I doubt the ads will be any more intrusive than the text ones we have here. There's really no sense in complaining over something that is really nothing.
karizmatkstalyn 07-02-2009, 07:18 PM I thought people payed $50 a year to not have ads. Could this be leading to free xbox live?
Noble Evildoer 07-02-2009, 07:39 PM I thought people payed $50 a year to not have . Could this be leading to free ?
Probably not. People pay for LIVE so they can play games online, not to avoid ads. As I recall (and I'm too lazy to go back and look) the ads shouldn't be too intrusive, so it's not like we'll be forced to watch a video play before we can do anything. It'll probably just be an ad in one of the boxes on the dashboard.

I meant Microsoft uses the subscription money to fund xbox live as opposed to ad money.

.I sorta am. Don't get me wrong I like being able to play whenever I want for free, but even with the last firmware update the PS3 is just catching up to the 360 which has had a large amount of the same features within a year or two from launch day. In that sense if Sony was getting more profit from PSN they might feel more obligated to get with the times as it were.
Granted the PS3 did start with some awesome stuff like the Internet browser and folding at home (I'm sure there was more but I got a PS3 way late to the party to know whats new or not.).
Noble Evildoer 07-02-2009, 10:02 PM I meant Microsoft uses the subscription money to fund as opposed to ad money.
Gotcha. Unfortunately for the anti-ad guys (I'm apathetic to it) this is a revenue stream I don't think Microsoft would be willing to NOT go after. Why leave that money on the table?
according to sanctuary for , this is what it will look like:

I think I could deal with that. I'm really just surprised there haven't been a bunch of companies giving free downloads of avatar clothing and stuff sort of like what a lot of them did with themes and gamer pictures.
MeRcEnArY 07-03-2009, 05:27 AM @Euanc, i can pritty much garantee that it wont look like that at all. . .
At worst, when you go onto the "inside xbox" blades, every other one will be an advert.

Yea my gt usually gets me more attention than I want. But then again who gets rothbart as a GT? Every time you say it it sounds like you wanna throw up. Anyways if you dont think that revenue from the ads help XBL in any way then your stupid. Just plain stupid.:lol::grin::roll:
KumiKaze 07-03-2009, 10:52 AM I don't mind the ads, but I think the real reason behind them is to help support the new stuff. I gotta believe that 1 vs 100 isn't cheap considering how much stuff they give away (or will give away). I think if they roll out some more stuff like that a few ads to help keep it running and be able to get prizes out of it isn't a bad deal.
ShortDude 07-03-2009, 02:08 PM some of the ads don't look too intrusive but one of them is like right in front of your face, the others are out of the way, as long as it gets me something free i want i'll deal. free XBLA anyone??
Paradigm13 07-03-2009, 04:29 PM according to sanctuary for gamers, this is what it will look like:
I saw this too, and I guess you have to take it at face value as it's definitely not official, but here's my thoughts on the look of it.
The ESPN crawl at the bottom actually would enhance my experience, but I know there's a lot of people out there that don't care for sports. The Coke one up by the avatars doesn't bother me, either (unless those people were actually in a party with a bottle of coke, THAT would bother me).
The McDonald's one is a different story. What would this mean for the themes, premium or not?
Noble Evildoer 07-03-2009, 04:42 PM The McDonald's one is a different story. What would this mean for the themes, premium or not?
It'd just be further proof that it was a dumb idea to waste your money on a background and static 3D images that sit behind your friends. Kind of like what happened to gamer pics once the avatars came out.

I agree with you, man. But I'm one of those people rocking UndeadDog's awesome SG theme, which I didn't have to pay a red cent for. I'd just be worried about it interfering with that. I guess it'd just be back to the drawing board for him.
rothbart 07-03-2009, 10:22 PM your stupid.
Here, I bought these for you: ' e
ShortDude 07-04-2009, 02:13 AM I agree with paradigm, I would actually love to have a kotaku ticker at the bottom of my dashboard....but i agree the large one that takes up the whole background is annoying. and the coke bottle already exists there are tons of coporate sponsored gamerpictures, It'd be like that only not representing a friend. Again I'm all for this if it benefits me in any way like the ticker or something free off the Marketplace.

True, it would be annoying. But it is only a concept apparently. I still suspect the main way they'll show advertising is with those boxes. Do those have names?
Also, that ESPN ticker would be tight.
