Legally speaking, if they gave any other type of answer, they'd just be inviting a lawsuit from Gertzman. No employer should make any type of comment regarding a former employee. They're not doing anything out of the ordinary with that quote.

Very long story short:

He made a review of K&L that Eidos didn't like, they took all their adds off Gamespot.com, and gamespot fired Gerstmann.

Did you really expect them to say anything else? "Yeah, we fired him because our advertisers bitched about his review."? This is 100% unsurprising.
