I’ve been going nuts with the lack of evil games. I’m tired of always playing the good guy and helping people to be selfless. So when I heard of Overlord I wanted to try it. Well after playing it 7 hours straight yesterday, I can honestly say it’s the most fun game I have played in a very long time.
In Overlord you play, well an evil Overlord. It’s like fable, mixed with lemmings, with a touch of action adventure, and the humor of rabbids thrown into one game. The goal of the game is to bring evil back to the land. You do thing through using 4 types of minions. Red shoot fire, Green inhale toxic gas, Blue can swim, and Brown are strong. The minions are basically used to solve puzzles and to fight bosses for you. So for example, early in the game you have to find the 4 minion hives so they have a home in your tower. To get the blue hive you have to take your green minions and inhale the swamp gas that surrounds the cave. To get the blue hive out of a cave you have to save some blue minions from a giant water serpent. This requires you to take your brown minions, have them jump on the serpent tear it apart. When they fall in the water (they can’t swim and tend to drown) you need to take your blue minions and have them swim out to the brown ones and revive them. Unlike most games where you control units, you can be a part of the action. You control the overlord on screen and have access to spells and weapons. In fact first boss that I fought required me to help my minions.
Another aspect that I love is the choice in how evil you want to be. This is where the game is kind of like fable. You are asked by people in the local village to do various deeds. One example is where the havlings have stolen their food and you are asked to go get it. So you head into the dungeon and when you reach the food you have a choice. You can bring the food back to the village or you can ignore them and take it back to you tower. On top of that you can choose if you want to kill any witnesses or not. I of course choose to keep the food, but did not kill the witnesses (I wanted them to know I was greedy). Upon going back to the village the mission giver said to me “I hope you know babbies are starving cause of you”. I then promptly set him on fire. Then the villagers all yelled at me for being mean until I killed some more and had my minions ransack their houses… now when I go into town they beg me not to hurt them.
Of course the real star of the game is the minions. They are funny in a rabbid sort of way. If you send them to ransack a house they will find things and wear them. In one of the areas you go in a Kitchen and you hear and see them smashing everything. They take the pots and pans and wear them on their heads, take the utensils and use them as weapons. If they find beer on a table, they will drink it then proceed to piss all over everything. When they find something they will say “this is mine!”. The minions of course adore you and live to serve you. So they will run off destroy a house and find something, run back and say “this is for you!” or “for the overlord” or “treasures!”.
I honestly don’t think there is a part of this game I don’t like. Everything seems to work together. You make choices that show real results. You can either work to have people love you or hate you. (as your head minion explains, sometimes you need to help people to get loyalty). You get to kill pretty much every happy fantasy type creature (I especially love killing the Unicorns, though they are man eating unicorns LOL).
So I highly suggest this game. It pure entertainment and who doesn’t want to kill Halflings (hobbits).
