Today here in Houston, we held a tweetup, or a twitter meetup, to discuss some ideas of what we can do to help advertise and get more support for Extra Life. Some of the people that came were people that had contacts to local news channels, artists for fliers, contacts to colleges like University of Houston, and some others that were willing to help.
We even had retweets about the meetup from some of the more popular Twitter users from Houston including Dan Silverman from chron.com. I'm thinking that if it helps to get the word out, using twitter will be very valuable to help out and get exposure and more importantly donations.
Here is what we talked about at our meetup. Maybe you can use these ideas if you decide to have a tweetup of your own in your area:
- Locations for a lock-in type event for Extra Life. Ideas ranged from yogurt internet cafes to hotel ballrooms to University of Houston arcade. We could bring game systems to set up and have people come and play and celebrate Extra Life.
- Contacts to supply gift cards such as restaurants and other stores like Hot Topic.
- Local news contacts for mainstream exposure.
- Ideas for silent auctions at the lock-in events. Gift ideas include gift cards and donated videogames.
- Flier and business card artists to advertise Extra Life and/or the lock-in event. Send out fliers to GameStops, arcades, schools and colleges.
- College frats and sororities to help manage or advertise the event for community service.
- Game tournaments, open to anything really.
- Other social networking ways to advertise the event i.e. facebook and other forums.
- Other satellite locations to hold smaller events. This may not apply to you but here in Houston, we are a damn big city. We are trying to find one central location, but either way it will be far for everyone. We brought up the idea of smaller locations doing the same thing with different people being in charge.
We also thought about if Extra Life has an official Twitter page. I'm not sure but I'm sure someone should use it to help spread the word and get some news out to the followers.
Well I hope this helps anyone out and gives you some ideas on how you can celebrate Extra Life this year. If you have any questions, please let me know. Let's earn that Extra Life.
