View Full Version : Violence?

I was going home from a LAN party the other day, and I got to thinking; it is so easy to make a violent videogame. The formula is very standard. Anyone could make a decent FPS. We all know violence thoroughly enough to make great games out of it.

This leads me to my next thought... Are there no absolutely violence-free games simply because no one will spend the time to try and make them? Or because they aren't willing to risk the failure money wise? Of course, this doesn’t include those classy games such as Minesweeper, or pinball. I’m thinking more along the lines of Myst, or something.

I honestly have no hardcore opinion on this whole thing; it’s basically a fragment of overly conceptual thinking. But I figured you guys would have some great things to say about it. :D

Console/Handheld games that are violence free:

Club House Games For the DS
A Tale in the Desert MMO
Any flavor of Suduku or tetris
Bust a Move Bash
Big Brain Academy of Brain Age
DDR
Marble Mania
Nintendogs
Super Monkey Ball
Mario Party
Pikmin
Sim City
Super Swing Golf
Wii Sports (well not boxing)
Viva Pinata
Rollercoaster Tycoon
Katamari
Animal Crossing
Outpost Kaloki
De Blob
Cooking Mama
Wario Ware

Those are just a few games that are pretty much completely violence free. Now if you are talking about FPS games, well they are First Person Shooters, so there has to be some violence.

If you are looking for adventure games then go here:
http://www.dreamcatchergames.com/tac/. Some are based in crime, but the gameplay itself is anything but violent.

In otherwords the games are out there, you just have to look. :)

Well, the worlds best-selling game The Sims has pretty much no violence in it, besides that people can catch on fire and die.

Sam & Max. Greatest. Game. Ever.

Agreed. But how's about Full Throttle?

P.S. About the violence in games. ESRB is really a bit angry right now... They've killed one of my "best chances to purchase on UMD" game.. Manhunt 2...

Now I'm thinking of going back and getting the first one so I'm ready for the 2nd if it ever comes out... and I'm sure it will. When there is a Rock Star... there is always a way.

The first Manhunt was boring and repetitive. Two is a whole new story line so you won't be lost if you didn't play the first one. This one should pwn though :)

Edit: haha Scrubble wanted to talk about non-violent games and the thread turned to Manhunt. Thread Hijackers! Fu*k yeah!

The Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) is a self-regulatory organization that applies and enforces ratings, advertising guidelines, and online privacy principles for computer and video games and other entertainment software in the United States and Canada (officially adopted by individual provinces 2004-2005).

It was established in 1994 by the Interactive Digital Software Association (now the Entertainment Software Association). By early 2003, it had rated over 8,000 titles submitted by 350 publishers. Some believe that the ESRB may promote media restriction, while others think that it is necessary for software to have content ratings.

The decision to found the ESRB was influenced by violent content found in games such as Mortal Kombat and Night Trap and other controversial video games depicting violent or sexual situations at the time, and by pressure from the United States Congress.

It only took a short time before people started looking at video games as possible contributers to todays youth violence. In order to have better control the ESRB was established. I read sometime ago and I for a fact felt this to be completely true. Depending on how a person grows up will depict on what they become. For example you have 2 kids, one lets name him kid A who lives in a dangerous town full of crime, and not a very friendly family. 2nd "kid B" lives in a mansion with a more loving family and a safer environment. You give these 2 kids the same game, lets take for example GTA 3. Now because of the environment they live in the one more likely to fall into crime is kid A. Kid B has a much less likely chance to follow some sort of crime because of the way he lives.

The explination I read was something along those lines but clearly it was better written then I have. I just wish my PC didn't die on me so I could have posted it. In the end though I don't think video games are a majour contributor to the violence of today. People always have choices, they should know clearly whats right from wrong. I myself grew up watching tons of violent movies, im talking Commando, Robocop, hell even Chucky. When I got my first console (N64) I played the games that came as bloody as possible. I turned out quite well. Of all my life I've only been in 1 fist fight, just 1 and thats cause the other guy deserved it and everyone knew it. I don't have a criminal record (sorry Lono I'm sure you can find other clients =P ). Thats proof enough that no matter what kind of violence a kid is exposed to, it all comes down to how they grow up and what kind of environment they are exposed to.

Exactly. Any appearance of danger is merely a device meant to enhance the testing experience.
