View Full Version : New Gaming PC
Malice 12-05-2007, 07:58 AM Hey all...I figured Lono wanted you to know he wants you all to help me buy a new Gaming PC. My desktops are underpowered and my laptop, now just doesnt have the graphics horsepower to handle the new stuff.
Lono says you need to give me some money.
OK, I say Lono says it, but it sounds better if it came from him.
:)
On a side, if you were building a new gaming pc, what proc and card would you go with, or would you wait for a few months till some new ones came out?
chrispenny 12-05-2007, 08:43 AM If you don't give us some kind of budget, then it's kind of hard for us to build a PC for you.
But ok. Here's something:
Intel Quad-Core Extreme 3.00GHz
ASUS Striker Extreme nForce 680i
2 x SLi GeForce 8800 Ultra 768MB
4 x Corsair 1Gb DDR3-1333
Seagate 1TB SATA 7200rpm

Should only set your back about NZ$5,000
That is about what I was thinking processor wise...I am not up to the motherboards...so getting info is always good.
Not sure if I honestly would want to spend the money on two video cards.
As for hard drives, I would want to only put one in since I have a NAS on my home network for space...
Lono, want to contribute to my computer fund since my wife wont let me buy a new one?
chrispenny 12-05-2007, 08:57 AM If you can actually afford to waste money on everything I just linked. I would be amazed.
That processor alone is NZ$1,500 - It's the only Quad-Core 3.0 available atm. Which is why it's around NZ$1,200 more expensive than it's closest rival.
DD3 RAM is going to set you back around NZ$800 per 2gigs.
Those 2 video cards are around NZ$1,000 each.
What I linked is basically the best you could get. It would last you many, many years, but it's by no means worth it.
So... Again, if you want to come up with some kind of budget, I'll start linking builds that are not absolutely ridiculous.
chrispenny 12-05-2007, 09:05 AM AMD Athlon64 X2 6000+
ASUS M2N-E SLI
2 x APACER DDR2 800 DIM 2GB
ASUS GEFORCE 8800GTS 640MB
Seagate Barracuda 500GB
This is more like a NZ$1200 computer - Yea, this entire computer is cheaper than just the CPU I linked before :P
This is probably a good place to start if you're actually totally clueless.
If you want to spend a bit more, you can easily get an AMD Quad-Core 2.2GB (though you'll need to get a Motherboard that allows Quad-Core).
You can also easily enough get a GeForce 8800GTX, or Ultra instead of a GTS.
Or if you want to spend less money you can easily get a GeForce 8800 GT instead of a GTS.
Just... Whatever video card you get, make sure it's an 8800, not a 8600 - the GPU on the 8800 series just rapes the 8600.

I am actually going to hold out till the new generation comes in probably about the middle of the year next year...the new geforce cards will drop in price quite a bit in the next few months....Thanks for the advice, I know ocmputers but I simply just dont keep up on the hardware ned for motherboards and video cards...
I would imagine I want to spend about $1000 US dollars on it.
chrispenny 12-05-2007, 09:24 AM that should get a pretty decent PC then.
Just remember (now that we have SLI around):
1 High end video card is better than 2 middle range video cards.
Same goes for 1 middle for 2 low end.
I made the mistake of getting a 8600 thinkin "eh, I'll just get another and SLI the beasts". Then I noticed how badly the 8800 GPU pwns the 8600's.
Expensive mistake on my part.
