Today, I was visiting my local Sony Style store to pick up a new headset (my old jabra died and I decided to get the one that originally came with Socom and the Tom Clancy Endwar game). I was waiting for the worker to call the manager for some reason and decided to give the ps3's a look (I always do, don't ask!) I was just moving around and I went to system information. Well, it turns out this was an actual system, not a 'demo' tha tthe stores usually have because it let me do some stuff on it. I just moved around, fooling around and stuff, and decided to see if the stores actually kept the systems up to date. What do you know? It LITERALLY had "System Software Version: 3.00" plasterred all up on the screen!!!!!! **bleep**????? I didn't ask the guy... Why? Eeek. What should I have done? It didn't look "revamped" or anything, there were just a few more accessory settings and an option for in game headset volume... What would that even be used for? *

I sounded all giddy in the video! I wasn't being too obvious, and the worker that was at the door when I walked in was busy helping somebody. But, well, damn.... A different worker with a different nametag came up to me and said, "I am going to need to see your phone, sir." That gave me the creeps. I definitely saw something I wasn't meant to. I had to go to some little room with the surveilance and what not and the guy had to watch me to see that I deleted the video. Then he said someting about updating systems in their stores*too early and not wanting everyone to flip out and start a scene because it could get him in trouble. I agreed, and well I had to leave. But he said "stores' guys. I think Sony Style stores have the aformentioned 3.0 update already on their systems! GO CHECK!!!

The only way to confirm is if you go to the local Sony Store yourself to make sure, but I completely think this guys is full of shit.

Also, I may be wrong, but display systems in stores might have different types of FW updates, since when you try one everything is locked out but the pics,music,video and the ability to play games.

sony style do show off things before there release if you ask they tell you to refer their website. they dont have a guy sitting a room just watching the demo ps3. he's the stores loss prevention (Lp) officer. thats why there is a room with surveillance, he watching for everything. he's preventing theft in any kind. your on their property its theft. but i seen it, its 3.00. they looked at me weird, making sure i didn't act out of line.

Theres a picture of the 3.00 update on page six but I think its fake, all it has is firmware 3.00, theres no other pictures or anything, and also the background isn't the original and stores wont change the wallpaper would they?

LOL, you think someone that doesn't already own a PS3 will notice that it has an unreleased firmware or that someone that OWNS a PS3 runs to a PS3 kiosk and checks the firmware version? New features or it doesn't matter...

Do you have a mental database of current firmware versions of devices you don't own? I can see how heading to Best Buy must take forever for you... I bet most non-PS3 owners would be hard pressed to figure out how to even check the firmware version.

The only thing I've read here that I give any consideration to is that the retail kiosks may be on a completely different versioning system for their firmwares... I don't find that terribly unlikely because I suspect kiosks are different in various ways... so maintaining their firmwares separately makes sense... and if you're numbering them, well... numbers are numbers. There are only 10 digits to use...

But Sony's firmware release history doesn't support major updates on major version increments... if you're referring to saving big features for 3.00. The "big" features have been released on minor version updates and and typically minor features have been released on major updates... point is, Sony releases stuff as it's ready to be released... they certainly haven't shown much evidence of "banking features" until a major version update and I'm not sure why they'd start now.

Let's see, the jump from 1.94 to 2.00 (a major version increment) looked like this:

MOST people find out because they're forced to update when they turn their PS3 on, not because they happen to read a website.

Bottom line, Sony has NEVER used a firmware update as a marketing tool and likely never will... and it's almost certainly not being done from a retail store even if that store is Sony's own store. Jesus. It's SO CRYSTAL CLEAR you're just f*cking with me because you can't be that dumb.
