View Full Version : Help me convince my parents
mmm11105 07-21-2009, 05:38 PM I need you to help me convince my parents to let me get Fallout 3.
I may only be 14 but my parents let me watch R rated movies, I read Tom Clancy Novels, am the top student in my class, and run my own computer repair business.
I saved up for 2 months to buy Fallout 3. My parents were fine with it. The they read the ESRB description which focuses on the very worst parts of the game.
So now I am banned from Fallout 3.
Please give me ideas,
mmm11105
Cheese 07-21-2009, 05:40 PM Show them a gameplay video on youtube. Preferably without the gory bits.
McChiken116 07-21-2009, 05:42 PM Does this remind anyone else of the epic thread that inzader made last year?
nizlop 07-21-2009, 05:53 PM For such a successful 14 yo I'm surprised your parents don't give you more rope.
What I would do is argue that as such a driven and clear minded person, you are capable of overcoming the negative parts of the game; that you are too mature to allow them to affect you
Oh wait this is real life, maybe you should just hide it in a drawer soewhere
But seriously though, my parents accept the I've been successful of my own accord, so let me make my own decisions argument, so maybe worth a try
petergriffen1990 07-21-2009, 06:18 PM Ok well.. my arguement would be.... im been behaving for 14 years ... and its hard mom and dad you should try it...if i dont get fallout 3... im gonna do pot....... i bet they'll let you get it now
PCvsApple 07-21-2009, 07:26 PM Tell them that Fallout 3 is not nearly as bad most rated R movies. If they disagree, go with the pot excuse...
PopTrogdor 07-21-2009, 07:52 PM tell them to go to http://www.whattheyplay.com/ which is the parents guide to video games, that will either help you, or mean that you never get to play any games until you are old enough to buy them yourself.
It's a gamble, you've got nothing to lose as your parents arent letting you get the game now anyway!
McChiken116 07-21-2009, 09:18 PM I can play whatever I want so I can't relate to you. But try the I'm responsible route.
karizmatkstalyn 07-21-2009, 09:48 PM Get a friend or cool uncle to buy it for you.
Shane86 07-21-2009, 09:58 PM No, you're too young, I hear viva pinata is good, get that instead.
Tinman 07-22-2009, 01:16 AM Have they read "R" rated movie descriptions? They make the movie sound like porn!
Fallout 3's description doesn't hold a candle to most "R" movies these. Watchmen, for example, has the "R" tag because of graphic violence, nudity, sexuality, and language.
Fallout 3 is less violent than Watchmen (to say the least), and Watchmen has a sex scene (while you can beat Fallout 3 without seeing so much as a nipple,) yet they have similar ratings and reasonings for said ratings.
Ratings are kinda s**t to tell ya the truth. Trust me, I worked at a movie theatre for 2 years.

I agree with Poptrogdor and most of the reasonable posts here. You sound like a pretty level headed kid, and my best suggestion would be to point your parents to whattheyplay.com. They don't write about the games like the ESRB does. The game might be a bit gory (overly so, at some points), but I've seen much worse in movies, and the equivalent on some TV shows (I can't watch any of the CSIs when I'm eating).
Just realize that your parents are actually doing what they deem to be in YOUR best interest, and don't hold it against them. I know it sucks, but what's one game? Even if it is a pretty great game, it's just a game dude. I would think twice myself about letting my 14 year old get this game. I loved it, but would not play it in front of my girls.

Look, I'm 25 and my mother STILL doesn't let me play M rated video games.
She says "You have an apartment, a girlfriend, a job, and a car... you're NOT old enough yet to be mature!"
I need therapy...

godslabrat 07-23-2009, 01:31 PM When I had turned 16, my local movie theater got a stick up their ass and really started enforcing the "No one under 17 can buy tickets for R-Rated movies" rule. And it sucked, because Alien: Resurrection was coming out in a week, and I really wanted to see it, since I'd never seen any of the other Alien movies in the theater.
However, it was not gonna happen. There must have been an incident or something because that theater was fascist about the matter for 2 solid years. No buying a PG-13 ticket and sneaking into an R movie, no have your older friend buy a ticket and pawn it off on you. They were watching for that shit. So... I accepted it and waited a few months to turn 17. At that point NO ONE could tell me what movies I couldn't see. Yeah, I missed out a little in the short term, but by waiting a little, I got UNLIMITED FREEDOM. The tradeoff was totally worth it.
BTW- I did end up seeing Alien: Resurrection on video. It sucked.
Big But 5 07-23-2009, 01:50 PM get some one to by it for you and put it in a kiddy games case so long as they dont see a head fly of you should be fine

You run your own computer repair business, yet it took you 3 months to save up enough to buy a video game? :\
Demief 07-23-2009, 07:21 PM Tell them that Fallout 3 is not nearly as bad most rated R movies. If they disagree, go with the pot excuse...
I read this and immediately thought of the what if: they could be like "WHAT! No more R rated movies then!" lol
Basically i would tell your parents: It's a game. A post-apocalyptic game. Anything you see most likely could not be immatated even if you had the inclination. If you are a responsible fourteen year old, remind them of this fact.
Perhaps make a stipulation. For example: You will ace the next exam in return for a bit of leeway in this case.

mmm11105 07-24-2009, 02:44 PM I tried to talk to my parents today and they just screamed at me and said that they're not going to talk about it.
I spent 4 days preparing my case, and they won't listen.
