What do you think is the best new intellectual property created in this console generation? Or to put it another way, the best new game universe created for the 360, PS3 or Wii. :undecided:

Personally, I think that Mass Effect is probably my overall winner, with Uncharted following closely behind. Gears of War gets an honourable mention (although I don't care for GoW2 that much) as does Bioshock - while both Mirror's Edge & Assassins Creed are IP's that I really enjoyed and will keenly follow what they do next.

Some people may mention Dead Space but while I was initially quite impressed with the game, I thought it wore a little thin half way through.

Mass Effect wins for me because it had a very fleshed out universe with lots of background story and is in a Sci-Fi setting that I really appreciated.

You didn't mention Skate or Saints row, I think they are definitely in the top ten.

I choose Mass Effect also, although the elevator load times make me want to buy the PC version. There are also some other big contenders that haven't been named including No More Heroes, Portal, The Conduit(I thought the game was great), MadWorld and Lost Odyssey.

You're right I didn't - mainly because I don't agree  Skate especially is not a gaming universe that I have any interest in - not saying I have anything about skate culture in general but I really would not put it anywhere near the top ten most interesting game worlds created in this generation.

I know Skate made many innovations with controls but that is not really what I look for when assessing the merits of a new IP. And Saints Row is just a poor man's GTA on drugs! I kid, but I would have rated Crackdown above Saint's Row in interesting free world IP's.

You didn't mention a hell of a lot of games - didn't even mention the other eight games in your top ten

And Heyfling Portal is a good shout but is a bit weird as it's not really a full game, so I'm never quite sure whether to include it or not. :undecided:

I think you're right with Mass Effect. In a single game, they established an entire universe that worked as a coherent whole, and managed the truly impressive trick of making a memorable protagonist who can look and act hwoever you like. The universe has massive scope for sequels and spin offs, and I figure we'll see them soon enough.

Bioshock's an excellent game and had wonderful atmosphere, but I'm not certain you can get much out of the franchise without continually repeating what made it special in the first place. It's a stand alone novel, rather than a saga, though maybe Bioshock 2 will change my mind.

Oh, and depending on how you define "generation", I suspect that the Crysis series may be around for some time. Much better game than it was given credit for at the time.

It's a fantastic game, it has nothing to do with the "game world" or the controls.

Valkyria Chronicles

Good point, missed that off my list, great game, strong IP

A lot of people think Saints Row2 is better than gta4.

Granted but even if it's a better game (I would go with just more fun and less accomplished/polished myself) but most people would agree that it is not the strongest IP - I played through the first game and couldn't tell you the name of a single supporting character (apart from the Chicken suit guy) and I think the town was called Stillwater but I couldn't tell you a single place name or place of interest - save for the very generic church.

It's a fantastic game, it has nothing to do with the "game world" or the controls

So what you want to do is wait for someone to pose the question "What is your eighth or ninth favourite game of this generation?" Then slap in "Skate" and I'll have no reason to argue but I fail to see why anyone would chose a recreation of the real world to answer the question.

But then the question is perhaps a little misleading and would perhaps be clearer if it read "What is the most interesting/well thought out IP of this console cycle?"

The point I'm making is that I'm trying to ask who came up with the most interesting and fully realised universe to base a game in, rather than find out what your favourite new game series is.

Conduit is damn nice... though I dont know how much I call it's world worth mentioning... and Im halfway through it.

Purely on the IP and NOT the games, I would say MadWorld is amazing, Bioshock made an amazing world... but I think my favorite new world Spore, actually... just because it is so reflexive.

Gripshift, I love that game. Lost Planet, Crush, Chromehounds, Folklore, Hotel Dusk, Rockband and Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan all deserve mentions too.

Would have been Universe At War but I hear it was pants on console :p

Mass Effect, Uncharted, Mirrors Edge and Assassins Creed are all new IP's I have loved this generation and I think all of them deserve a sequel.

for me it has to be bioshock. That game had an amazing atmosphere to it and it had a strong narrative throughout. It did seem to change direction towards the end but it was still a good game and a great new IP. I didn't really get the same sense of atmosphere and immersion in Mass Effect. I think the boring extra planets kinda spoilt it for me although the character development and narrative was quite good.

I forgot to mention Crackdown on my list of games. It is currently my favourite sandbox game to come out this generation.

Uncharted gets my vote.

The game is amazing in so many levels, and I expect the second to surpass it!

Even though the sequel isn't that great. I'll go with the Gears of War series.

Mirrors Edge is probably my overall pick, but most everyone's picks are all very good :)

Assassins Creed is my pick, but I am kind of a fanboy (even though the first one did not meet my expectations).

I'd also go with Bioshock and Mass Effect, both great games in their own right.
