V3NOM 08-19-2007, 04:10 PM Terrible. I'm saving for an upgrade though. This PC is 5+ years old.
Asus P4G533 mobo (Socket 478)
Intel Pentium 4-B 2.4GHz
2 x 512MB PC3200 DDR
GeForce FX5500 (BFG)
80GB 7200RPM IDE master (Maxtor)
9GB 5400RPM IDE slave (Maxtor, a spare part from a really old PC)
300w cheap old PSU
15.5" CRT monitor (NEC)
Windows XP Home Edition installed on the master drive
Ubuntu 7.04 (Feisty Fawn) on the slave drive
GRUB at startup lets me choose which
Surprisingly, I can actually get Oblivion to run on this thing, albeit not very well. It plays Half-life 2 on high settings at a playable framerate at 1024x768, so it works for me.
...Anyone capable of doing worse than me?
You beat me...
Volkov 08-20-2007, 02:13 PM Ew, a Geforce 5x series. Why?
firestormgamer 08-21-2007, 12:16 AM Ew, a Geforce 5x series. Why?

V3NOM 08-21-2007, 12:25 AM Ew, a Geforce 5x series. Why?
I got it when they were actually newish. I want to upgrade, but if I upgrade then I'm getting an 8 series, which means upgrading my mobo, RAM, CPU, and PSU first.
zbiggie 08-25-2007, 02:01 PM well for now i got myself my Dell xps M1710, laptop

kingbiscuit13 09-04-2007, 01:14 PM Its over 18 months old now but cost me (laptop only) around £2700 (or $5400)
Rock Xtreme 64 Laptop
Processor: AMD FX60
Graphics: 7800gtx (needs an upgrade soon)
2gb Corsair RAM
2x100gb sata drives (I binned the RAID. I just use as sepearate drives)
17" 1680x1050 screen
Dual Layer DVD
TV card
built in webcam
5 speakers (shit)
All pretty standard kit. Its not overclocked or anything the thing gets hot enough as it is. I needed laptop so I could take it to work and use as well as being a games machine.
On top of that Ive got
2x 500gb Western Digital Probook drives for storage
Focusrite Sapphire Firewire soundcard which I hook up through a Sony STR-DE495P Receiver for my surround sound.
A kreon firmware external Samsung drive (used for... well, you know!)
and I hook the whole lot up to my 40" sony kdl40V2500 LCD and use a wireless mouse and keyboard to play with.
Im thinking of going back to desktops for my next machine as they7 are much cheaper and easier to upgrade. But it wont be untill graphics make a big leap forward and I think I need the extra power.
LEGEND 09-04-2007, 03:36 PM Wahay first post!

kingbiscuit13 09-05-2007, 05:45 AM I forgot to put my mac in too.
Just bought this baby a few weeks back. Dont use for gaming though, just my 3D stuff and it will be used for my recording studio stuff eventually too.
2X Quad core Xeon processors (8 Cores altogether, yess)
4GB Full Buffered ECC DDR2 667mhz memory
NVidia Quadro FX 4500 512mb Graphics
250gb and 500gb sata drives (may get a RAID card when I start using for my audio stuff but they cost £659 which I think is ridiculous.
Dual L226WTQ LG 22" widescreen LCDs (may get a couple of NEC screen to replace these soon)
I know it aint a PC but the power of this thing is fantastic. and it looks the bollocks too.
Now if only mac had some feckin games!!!

Feanor 06-03-2008, 09:23 PM I've been overheating lately, so I shelled out on a Corsair liquid cooling kit with a secondary GPU water block. I have absolutely no experience with liquid cooling, so I'm a bit nervous about installing the thing.

Feanor 06-11-2008, 03:19 AM That was my cellphone camera. It only gets good resolution for wide outdoor shots.
For example, I took these last week. You might have heard of the nasty weather we've been having in the midwest. I was caught on foot about 45 minutes from home with reported funnel clouds in the area.

DarkDragon9906 07-07-2008, 12:00 AM Change the GPU to 9800 GTX, it's running for 180 CAD which is about 20 more than the GT ( 160 CAD) and has 10 % increase of performance over the GTS so its better. Plus the GT's cannot go into 3-SLI, only the 9800 GTX, 8800 GTS/GTX can. BTW nice choice in case, its expensive though.
Stevo 07-09-2008, 04:11 PM Thanks, I'll ask my friend about the switch in GPU's, i am changing the case to the air cooled version because i found out i would need to buy cooling blocks for my RAM, Chipset and both GPU's so that adds close to 600$ more. Also sicne i'm Canadian i'm buying from ncix.com, if anyone knows of a better and/or cheaper Canadian site please let me know.
DarkDragon9906 07-10-2008, 12:26 AM tigerdirect.ca and canadacomputers.com Are so much better than NCIX.com

Crescent 07-20-2008, 04:34 PM Just joined the forum and I thought I'd stop by here first since PC gaming is pretty much all I do. So.. hey all.
Anyway I recently built my computer and it is the first one I've built myself, it was a lot of fun and not nearly as difficult as I thought it would be.
The specs are:
Intel E8400 processor (dual core 3 GHz)
8800GTS 512mb
4 gb RAM
10k rpm boot drive and a 500 GB storage harddrive.
Asus p5n-d motherboard.
Antec P182 case.
Some corsair PSU.
I wrecked the stock cpu cooler while trying to install it (fiddly bastard) so I ended up buying a scythe aftermarket one, I think its called MINE or something.
Anyway it's running sweet except for some driver issues with the graphics card, which sucks quite a bit but I have yet to find some that function properly all the time. Even so the problems always appear right away so I can fix them before I get into playing.
Awoll SGF 07-22-2008, 01:25 AM Commadore Amiga 2000...

Niiiiice, the problem I had with my last case which had a lot of fans on it was the amount of noise the thing made, you may be interested in a product by the name of 'speedfan' (Youll have to google it as I don't have a link) its free and lowers the RPM of the fans to make the thing quiet. :)
I have to use it with my current case because it has one of the big fans which cover the whole side of a monster case thing.. (XCLIO case can't remember the model) and it makes so much noise you wouldn't believe.
Feanor 07-26-2008, 07:14 PM For the record, I'm an AMD fanboi.
Typhoon 07-27-2008, 05:52 AM 25 cm side fan 14 cm front fan and then 2 80mm rear exausts oh btw my front fan stats are 38000 rpm =] it has a turbine and thats only 3/4 the way on haha and the side fan can turn the front and rear fans just by itself it pushes in that much air

NONE of those fans are connected to the mobo (except the CPU fan of course which by itself isn't loud at all). They're all connected via molex connectors so unless the program 'speedfan' controls it all through the CPU somehow it won't make a difference.
Also, I could care less about the noise level as I won't be sitting right next to the tower I will be a good 6'-10' away since my HDTV is the monitor...
While yes I will still be able to hear it from that far away, I still don't care because when I will be gaming I will have surround sound headphones when i game, when I sleep I will just get used to the noise...
In otherwords no I don't need the program (even if it made a difference) because I don't care how noisy it is...
Stevo 07-31-2008, 03:19 AM Well, i've been saving up for awhile, sold my old MX bike since it's to small for me, here's what i bought :)

What made you go with the Phenom? Compared to the Intel offerings, it's woefully underclocked.
Sarow 08-13-2008, 08:34 AM My motherboard CPU socket is AMD 2+ so unless i was going to switch motherboard i am stuck with AMD. That said it also costs less than a comparable CPU (in the UK atleast) and i have encountered few problems with it so far.

LatinLegacy 10-05-2008, 06:58 AM That it one pretty impressive setup. Want to see pics & a CPU-Z =D. I was considering doing a Penryn build but I was able to hold off. It would of been my first tick build but tick builds are usually not large leaps in performance compared to a tock build. The Tick, Tock is a model created by Intel to describe there CPU advancements. So like saying the Q6600 I have is a tock & his Q9450 is a tick. More on all that confusing crap can be read here..
http://www.intel.com/technology/tick-tock/index.htm
Reason why I go with tock builds is due to the fact that there are much larger leaps in performance found in the tock generation of CPU's when compared to the tick generation. Same goes with the hardware that surrounds it. Better motherboards, GPU's, etc seem to hit during those times. Either way that's a solid build you have.

Thanks, cable management in that thing wasn't easy!
If you look in from the front bay panels you can see that there are really no obstrucitions restricting airflow from front to back...
In other words all the wires you see from the side view are basically tucked enough out of the way that I still get the airflow I want.

First off how much do you make a year, where do you work and where can I get a job application!
Your computer is probably like a computer geek's form of crack, and I seriously wish I had the money to pay for that monstrosity! Your computer is really kickass and I envy you.... However, there were some things I just have to comment on, I am not trying to offend you in anyways...
Processor
OK I'm sorry, I just laughed really hard becuase if you had waited until Q1 of 2009 (as in not too far down the road) you could've gotten an Oct-Core processor from intel for more performance while nearing the same general price!!! Your processor is very good, no scratch that your CPU is like sex... It's something I won't have for a very long time! However, from a financial aspect and a futureproofing aspect that it might have been a better decision to wait.
Your motherboard, it is a good motherboard for sli at the momment, but this also ties in with the OCT-Core processors... The Oct Core processors are comming out with new mobos obviously as they are nearly twice the size of the Quad cores... and this also means new features!!! Such as an Intel Chipset that can do SLI!!! Intel chipsets don't overheat as much so are much better than Nvidia in that aspect.
Blu-Ray: +10
Sound-Card: I have the same one +http://upload.wikimedia.org/math/d/2/4/d245777abca64ece2d5d7ca0d19fddb6.png
Liquid Cooling: I envy you!
Boost Processor and etc: I'm going to go off of a quote from another forum as of which I partake in that 75% of the time in that forum we help people build gaming computers (well the selection of parts part that is).
"We don't need no Overclocking utilities, a real man does it with his bios."
Seriously, I overclocked my CPU with my bios on my own and found the process to be rather fun... well I was annoyed when I first started stress testing and found I had to drop the clock by .1 GHz to get it to 24/7 stable.
My video card was factory overclocked, however it probably wouldn't have been too hard either...
Memory, when you overclock your CPU you either have to underclock your ram of overclock it... in my case my Mushkin RAM cooperated with me and I was able to achieve a stable RAM overclock without much difficulty...
Tweaking Windows: I don't know how to do this, but I do know that it needs to be done... so  to you for paying for it!
LCD Display: OMG! You PAID 8K FOR A GAMING RIG AND YOU'RE USING A 24" MONITOR!?! GO FULL OUT AND GET A PROJECTOR OR AT LEAST AN HDTV... A PROJECTOR WITh 1080p MIGHT I ADD...
Speakers: While this ties in with HDTV... I don't have a 5.1 surround sound speaker system but I have surroudn sound headphones, so... I'd atleast hope you'd have gotten surround sound of SOME sort with this kickass rig.
Warranty :thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup: :thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup: :thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup: :thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:

Typhoon 11-09-2008, 03:22 AM very nice rig but for 7grand a little over priced and exspecially seeing duel 4870x2s would have been better
LatinLegacy 11-09-2008, 10:26 AM The system is ok but a wast considering the next gen overhaul is just a month away. Even a rig like that will fall behind quickly to the X58 architecture. He didn't choose a raid config either, doh xD.

If it's got a Phenom, then no.

Oh? Explain what is so wrong with the Phenom?

ShockwaveLover 11-28-2008, 07:23 AM Oh? Explain what is so wrong with the Phenom?
The clock speeds are terrible, and even overclocking doesn't improve them much. Also, they are 65mn chips; the Intel line is 45nm. That's why Intel is the way to go if you want performance and value. At the moment anyway.

You paid $1700 for that? I'm assuming it was pre-built.
Granite 11-28-2008, 10:23 AM I'd certainly hope so. You can get a laptop with those specs for that price or considerably less.
...ah, hold on. AUS $. That just makes it overpriced instead of crazy.

The Black Edition was built to combat these problems. (That is what i read about it anyway, built to compete with Intel more aggressively, and cover the problems of the older AMDs.) And to be honest, i get no problems, it runs everything i want it to, it runs crysis, at high settings too, (Crysis recommended high ) It works well, fast, strong etc. i have no problems with it.

Crysis recommends high on any computer with an nvidia card it seems...
There's nothing wrong with the phenom chips... obviously there are chips that are better but that doesn't mean the phenom is bad.
EDIT:
My rig is:
q6600 2.24ghz
4gb Crucial Ballistix ddr2800
8800GTS 640mb
I built it over a year ago... it runs everything I want to play perfectly fine. I played through crysis and warhead on med-high settings at acceptable framerates 1680x1050. Left 4 Dead which is my current addiction runs perfectly with everything absolutely maxed including AA and AF. Knowing that Source engine is my no means absolute high end graphics... it still looks awesome... and with the tweaks that valve keeps making to it, I imagine it will continue to fuel quality games for several more years.
I imagine that I will want to upgrade sometime around the end of 2009 or early 2010... unless some new game comes out that I must play. Though, the Core i7... looks awesome.

slik1000 12-10-2008, 03:51 PM Just upgraded me monitor, I now have a Samsung SyncMaster2032 20" screen and a SyncMaster T200. looks great. Both are set to 1680x1050. Going to get myself a 280 in January too.
Caelas 12-11-2008, 09:20 PM I'm thinking of going with a 280 also, the 4870 x2 is overpriced, a 280 will be around 320$ in January, not too bad.
Viibe 12-11-2008, 09:59 PM Alu iMac FTW!
LatinLegacy 12-11-2008, 10:41 PM I was going to go with two 280's for my new build but I caught wind of the GTX 295

Typhoon 12-15-2008, 04:09 PM im going with a single 4870x2 because running duel 4870s will cost more, plus by the time i get this build ATI will have there new cards out
LatinLegacy 12-15-2008, 04:19 PM Well ATI better do something because AMD as a whole only have almost 1 billion dollars left. They are predicted to only survive another year or two if they don't come out with something groundbreaking soon. To compare, Intel has around 40 billion in revenue this year alone to play with. AMD saw losses across the board. I will not risk buying anything ATI at this moment in case of an AMD collapse.
