While most corporations look for handouts from their local governments to help them during these harsh economic times, Microsoft has decided to look to another group for an economic enema. Not sponsors or special interest groups, just good old fashioned, home grown, stupid people. If that’s you, I half-heartedly apologize.
Sony has been giving PS3 owners the option to be nickel and dimed since Home launched all of those months ago. I have never paid the fifty cents to a dollar for clothing for my homie; or furniture for my apartment that I only visited once, much less five dollars for another new apartment for me not to visit. I continue to mock those foolish people who feel the need to set their homies apart from others by paying actual money for virtual clothes.
At E3 2008, Microsoft announced the new XBL experience, which included Netflix, the party system (Which continues to drop members at random. (Oh, could you please fix that?), and the avatars. The avatars haven’t really served much of a purpose until 1 vs 100 came out and there’s that avatar racing game coming to Xbox Live Arcade… Someday.
The crappy clothes and accessories that allow you to customize your cartoon that have been available were free, until now. Break your wallets out boys and girls; this is going to get expensive.
Let’s start with shirts and sh**. All tee shirts and hats, some of which have Halo logos (OMG PEOPLE ARE ACTUALLY GOING TO BUY THESE!) on them, are going to cost you 1.00 USD in MS Points (80). I’m not sure why they feel that these are warranted to be worth that much, but the point is that they know some of you “stupid” people will buy it.
From there, it gets even more ridiculous: accessories. There’s a ring for 40 MS Points (Yes, a f***ing ring!). Why in the wide world of sports would you spend money on something that no one is even going to notice? Even if they did, how would that conversation go?
Tool123: “Oh snap, is that the Halo Laser Kill Ring?”
BiggestToolEva: “Hell yes it is! Ain’t it all kinds of bad ass? Dropped half a Washington on this baby.”
(I apologize if you are reading this and your gamertag is either Tool123 or BiggestToolEva. Unless you actually end up having this conversation.)
But wait. If you don’t think your super awesome Halo Laser Kill Ring will be noticeable enough, simply shell out 160 MS points (2.00 USD) for; you guessed it, a giant cotton swab! You may be thinking WTF? But this is no joke. Even I couldn’t make this one up.
The fun doesn’t stop there; they also have toys for your avatar. The RC Warthog is 4 freaking dollars! It is about as useful as your avatar holding onto a dildo or vibrator. At least those would be good for some comedy as your avatar celebrated in 1 vs 100 with it’s vibrator being held over it’s head in triumph. What a f***ing good time!
I do miss the good old days of the original Xbox and all my free content. Is my 50.00 USD a year, plus game purchases not enough for you now Microsoft? Paying for DLC content for a game is one thing, but clothes and Premium Themes for my Xbox Dashboard is getting to be tad on the insane side of things.
So if you think that these purchasable clothing options will make you “unique” and an “individual.” Just remember that you and about a million other people will also have that Fable Tee, and were stupid enough to pay for it. Way to give Microsoft yet more of your hard earned money.
But don’t forget, I will be there to mock you. Relentlessly.
